The Ruins - Talisay City, Negros Occidental, Philippines - Aerial View
The Ruins of Talisay City, Negros Occidental, Philippines refer to the remains of the big mansion owned by the late Mariano Lacson, a rich sugar baron who managed his vast sugarcane plantation in the province during the 1900s.
The structure was burnt down by the owner during the Second World War to keep the Japanese forces from converting it into a military stronghold.
Because of its excellent construction, this Italianate architecture survived up to this day and has become one of the most fascinating ruins in the world.

A RUINED FILIPINO MANSION AND TWO CANADIANS IN THE PHILIPPINES!
We woke up in Bacolod and started adventuring around Negros Occidental. From the very beginning our day was ruined... Except not in the way you might be thinking! We started off exploring the ruined mansion of Talisay City, from where we headed off to a mountain adventure!
In this video you will see Bret Maverick and I (two Canadians) adventuring off towards a volcanic mountain on the island of Negros. This part of the Philippines is beautiful to drive! With massive fields of sugar cane, beautiful rice terraces and dense volcanic forest...
We ended up at a magical mountain side resort called Guintubdan on the side of Mt. Canloan (a volcano).
I guess starting our day off ruined was a good idea!
Power On!

THE RUINS | Talisay City's Most Popular Landmark
The Ruins is probably Talisay City's (Negros Occidental) most popular landmark. Surrounded by sugarcane fields, it's a hollow shell remains of an Italiannate mansion.
Built in the early 1900s, the house was the home of Don Mariano Ledesma and Maria Braga Ledesma and their children. The design was inspired by Italian architecture.
It was however razed by guerillas during the World War II and just the skelatal remains today.

The RUINS in Talisay City | Negros Occidental | Philippines | We.Are.Wanderful
The 'Taj Mahal' of the Philippines
OCTOBER 28, 2013—We've always been intrigued by The RUINS in Talisay City from the photos we've seen in FaceBook so when we finally get to visit Bacolod City we made sure to include it in our itinerary. We were not disappointed.
Although in some photos it may appear to be just the remnant of a once grand mansion, it has this strangely positive aura when you see it in person. Perhaps what makes it really beautiful goes beyond its physical appearance, for behind its ruined but still proud walls and pillars is a heartwarming love story from a bygone era. That love story from way back in the early 20th century, like the ruins of the mansion itself, has and continues to withstand the test of time.
What is now known as The RUINS was once a stately 10-bedroom Italianate mansion that was built by Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, a sugar baron of Negros, in memory of his wife who had died during the pregnancy of his 11th child. And then World War 2 happened and Philippine guerrilla forces (together with Don Mariano, according to local lore) razed the mansion to the ground to prevent it from being used as a garrison and headquarters by the invading Japanese.
Strangely (and perhaps miraculously), the mansion's pillars and walls, though smoldered in flames for several days, remained standing and remarkably still structurally sound. Or perhaps it is a testament to the quality of building constructions of the era.
This is a short slideshow video presentation of our photos during our visit at The Ruins in Talisay City. Enjoy watching.

Pre-War Lifestyle of a Sugar Baron
Don Angel Mascuñana & Family
Talisay, Negros Occidental, Philippines 1936
This was filmed by an American family friend using an 8mm Bell & Howell movie camera. It was during a town fiesta of Talisay sometime in 1936. The narrator is Indalecio or Dodoy one of the younger sons of Don Angel, who was one of the little boys in the film.
This rare film shows the life of a sugar baron in the island of Negros, particularly from the town of Talisay during the U.S. Commonwealth Period - old folks call peace time, just a few years prior to the Japanese invasion and subsequent occupation.
The Film Highlights:
The Art Deco mansion of Don Simplicio Lizares under construction designed by architect Juan F. Nakpil.
The old town plaza of Talisay with its bandstand and the old town church.
The luxury vintage cars -
The people’s way of dressing - the elite and the townsfolk
The lavish lifestyle of the Spanish-mestizo Don Angel Mascuñana and his family in his turn-of-the century mansion, that unfortunately no longer exists today. It was burned down by the guerillas in 1945 shortly before Liberation (So the Japanese could not occupy the house), like many of the other houses in Talisay. According to family accounts, the women were divested of all their jewelries, including those who sought refuge there. The mansion, including all its furniture and furnishings burned for three days. Only three of the grand houses remain intact today.

According to the description in Wikipedia:
The ancestral home mansion of the family of wealthy sugar baron Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson who built it in early 1900s, in memory of his Portuguese wife Maria Braga Lacson, who had died during the birth of her eleventh child. It was constructed on a 440-hectare plantation in Talisay City, Negros Occidental and burned down by the guerillas during the Second World War to prevent its use as military office by the invading Japanese forces. It burnt for 3 days down to its current empty cement shell.
