Yaroslavl, birthplace of Russian theatre - Postcard from Russia
Our postcard this week is from the birthplace of the Russian theatre.
Four hours by train north of Moscow, Yaroslavl is home to the famous Volkov Theatre, where Russia's first national drama company was formed.
It may be the country's oldest professional theatre company, reported Euronews' Seamus Kearney, but it's still very much at the heart of Russian theatre.
When the Postcards team paid a visit, the cast was rehearsing a modern adaptation of the Greek myth Orpheus and Eurydice ... while another play was being performed in a smaller auditorium.
Evgeny Marchelli, the Artistic Director of the Volkov Theatre, said:
Working in this theatre really fills me with emotion, and it motivates me to make it the best theatre in Russia, with a young feeling.

RUSSIA: NEW DIRECTORS FOR BOLSHOI THEATRE
Russian/Eng/Nat
XFA
New directors were announced on Saturday for Russia's famed Bolshoi Theatre, just days after a shake-up that tightened government control over the troubled institution.
Anatoly Iksanov, former head of St. Petersburg's Bolshoi Drama Theatre, was named general director, while Gennady Rozhdestvensky, a world-famous orchestral conductor, was named artistic director.
Minister of Culture Mikhail Shvydkoi made the announcement on Saturday during a meeting with Bolshoi dancers and staff.
The troupe were gathered for their annual meeting in the ornate hall of the Bolshoi theatre.
The Minister of Culture said he made the appointments on Friday.
They came just days after President Vladimir Putin placed the Bolshoi under direct control of the Ministry of Culture and sacked its artistic and general director, Vladimir Vasilyev.
The famed opera and ballet company, founded in 1776, has been rocked by financial woes and personnel disputes for years, and critics say the problems have led to the slipping of artistic standards.
The building itself, a landmark in central Moscow whose pink paint is peeling and dirtied by pollution, is in desperate need of repair.
Government officials said the changes were needed to jump-start a stalled renovation of the 224-year-old ballet and opera theatre and finish construction of temporary performance space next door.
Artistic director Rozhdestvensky is keen on maintaining Bolshoi's worldwide fame and keeping its classical repertory.
The troupe begins its 225th season on September 15.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The Bolshoi theatre is much more than just a theater for Russia. It is a symbol of the Russian State, it is a symbol of Russia's spiritual life. And the situation in the Bolshoi is a mirror of the situation in Russian society generally. And I think the new period of Bolshoi will be very important for Russian society, not just for Russian theatre and musical life.
SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail Shvydkoi, Minister of Culture
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I think the new leadership will somewhat alter the repertory policy. But the previous policy was fine with me, too. I liked it and still like it, because of it was Russian in nature, tailored for the Russian people. This is the basis of our strength and the fame of Russian opera.
SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Motorin, Bolshoi soloist

Mikhail Priorov. Russian Painter from Moscow
Born in Yaroslavl (Russia) in 1959, Mikhail Priorov studied at the Art School from 1973 to 1977 and graduated from Moscow Art College in 1982. He pursued his artistic training at the famous Stroganoff Art University, graduating in 1987 when he began to work at the Zagorsk Artistic Fund.
That same year Mikhail joined the International Federation of Artists. Since 1981 Priorov has participated in numerous local, national and international exhibitions. Solo exhibitions include Moscow House of Cinema in 2004; Mosfilm in 2003; International federation of Artists (UNESCO) in 2000; Moscow International Cinema Festival in 1999; Gallery ACTION, Moscow in 1998; Moscow Artists on TV, also in 1998; Noise Club in 1997, as well as RT Gallery for the Arts and the Winter Nights Festival. In 1996 he showed at the Russian Division of Culture; in 1995 at Chaffee Center, Vermont, USA; and in 1993 at Chasse Loup-Laubat 17, Paris. In 1987 he began combining painting with tapestry design and mural work.
A considerable part of his work is devoted to musical cycles, totaling thousands of pieces no two of which can be called identical. No matter how many times the artist returns to the chosen theme, he never fails to be innovative, conveying endless compositional variations. Strong attachment to his national heritage and traditional Russian icon painting greatly influence his work. In his vision, these things are not only relics of, but a part of, the living present. Old and modern are inseparable - the past entering and living in the present as its primal element.
Having spent his childhood in Yaroslavl, an ancient Russian town lying at the confluence of the Volga and the Kotorosl rivers, the contrasting hues of the picturesque town, the bustle of the port, the fairs, and the festivals were the source of unforgettable childhood impressions that lay the foundation for his love of the living past. Many years would pass, however, before these influences surfaced in the artist''s work.
Mikhail Priorov is an artist with a broad range of interests. He is well-versed in music and poetry as well as painting. He plays saxophone in a jazz-group and, in his work, often uses musical and poetic imagery.
