The Harrowing of Hell 2016
The first modern performance of the Harrowing of Hell, arguably the the earliest British work of drama dating from around the ninth century.
According to orthodox Christian belief, the fall of Adam and Eve from Paradise placed all humanity in the power of the devil until Christ redeemed those who accepted the faith by his death on the Cross. But what about those who had lived and died before Christ’s incarnation? This led to the legend, first found in the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus, that between his death on the Cross and his resurrection, Christ went to Hell, overthrew the devil, released the ancient righteous along with Adam and Eve, and led them to heaven. This is the subject of the fragmentary Latin Harrowing of Hell, found in the ninth-century Book of Cerne.

The Harrowing of Hell production formed part of the Theatrum Mundi festival of medieval drama held in Durham in 2016, which was organised by the Records of Early English Drama North East Project within the Department of English Studies, Durham University. Theatrum Mundi was supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Arts Council England, Durham World Heritage Site, Durham Cathedral, the Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies, the Early Music Shop, and Durham University.
