Kochi: The Tale of Sakamoto Ryoma - VISIT KOCHI JAPAN
Sakamoto Ryoma (1835-1867) was born in the castle town of Kochi in 1835. He was the man who created an opportunity to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate. While there were groups that were thinking of toppling the Tokugawa regime by force, Ryoma proposed overthrowing the shogunate in a peaceful fashion without war. The Tokugawa regime accepted his proposal and abdicated political power to the imperial court. He was active in many fields, and when he was 30, he launched Japan’s first shipping and trading company called “Kameyama Shachu” in Nagasaki. He is said to have been the first person in Japan to go on a honeymoon. He traveled throughout Japan in the last years of the Edo period until he was assassinated in Kyoto on his 33rd birthday.

Kochi is the capital city of Kōchi Prefecture located on the island of Shikoku in Japan. The total area is 309.22 km2. A symbol of the city is its most famous dish, katsuo tataki, made by lightly searing and seasoning tuna. The city has an estimated population of 332,059.
Kochi boasts several attractions of interest to travelers. A well preserved, original hilltop castle from the feudal period marks Kochi's downtown. Nearby on another mountain, Godaisan, pilgrims visit Chikurenji Temple, one of the 88 temples along the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The city is also the proud home of Sakamoto Ryoma, who played a role in realizing the Meiji Restoration. The Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum is located at the beautiful Katsurahama Beach, just south of the city center.

高知 坂本竜馬像を桂浜で見てきました。子供の頃家族旅行で高知県に来たことがあるので、たぶんその時にもここを訪れているはずですが、はっきり覚えていません。土佐犬の闘犬ショーみたいなのがあって、その看板をなんとなく覚えています。

The Ōmiya Hostel experienced the assassination of Sakamoto at the age of 31 years. A reformist Samurai who wanted the abolition of privileges and made the Japanese regime evolve towards democracy, he has experienced an eventful life which, more than any other, is extraordinary.

「志国高知 幕末維新博」第二幕の開幕を記念して運航された、「咸臨丸でゆく龍馬クルーズ」に参加しました。（2018/04/21)
高知新港を出港し、桂浜の沖で坂本龍馬像と、リニューアルされた坂本龍馬記念館を望み、港へ帰りました。海からの龍馬像は初めてです。
今回は、船上と陸からの映像が混在した内容となっています。

Kochi Castle (Japan)
Kōchi Castle is a castle located in Kōchi, Kōchi Prefecture, Japan.
The main entrance is directly across from the west entrance of the Obiyamachi shopping area. Visitors are asked to remove their footwear before entering the building, however slippers are provided.
As the castle is quite old, the tatami rooms are visible but not accessible. There is a small museum area with information entirely in Japanese. This museum houses several cultural artifacts of the Tosa region not native to the castle itself. The upper rooms of the tower are all empty, but visitors are allowed to climb to the top. There is a railing but no net around the balcony.
Handicap access is extremely limited, as the approach to the castle involves many steps, and there is no elevator.
The castle grounds are now a public park, and a popular location in spring for hanami. They contain the Prefectural Library and the Kōchi Literary Museum, in addition to statues of notable scions of the Yamanouchi family.
