The Greek Roman influence is evident throughout Cyprus but especially at the archeological sites like Kourion, which is an ancient city kingdom. The Amphitheatre is the star attraction and there is concerts, shows and plays here held throughout the summer months. The city has passed through different phases from Roman, to Christian periods and it has a very large market place within the city walls.
The large Amphitheatre sits 2,000 spectators today and its where mostly gladiator games were held. The theatre dates back to second century before Christ,originally it was smaller but the Romans decided to make it bigger in the second century after Christ. There were plays in the forum 3,500 spectators as you can see today it has place for 1,500.
The actors wore masks and they were called hypocrites. The English word hypocrisy comes from the actors who were wearing these masks and covering their true face. All the actors in that time were men. The role of women was always played by men. Also the cost of theatre was paid by rich people for the poor, It was a place were the spectators could watch their Greek tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides.
One of the most striking sights here is the beautiful floor mosaics in the city and they are mostly found in the house of Achileas.
Just three kilometers away from Kourion city lies another famous landmark. The sanctuary of Apollo and its stunning Cypro-Corinthian columns. This was a place of worship for a woodland god dating back to 6000 BC. It does not take long to tour around this site, but be sure to pile on the sun cream as the site is in direct sunlight.

Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, Kourion, Cyprus, Europe
Hylates was a god worshipped on the island of Cyprus who was later likened to the Greek God Apollo. His name probably derives from barking or forest, which is why Lebek calls him Apollo of the woods. He was worshipped from the 3rd century BC until the 3rd century AD. The sanctuary is located about 2,5 kilometres west of the ancient town of Kourion along the road which leads to Pafos. It was one of the main religious centres of ancient Cyprus, where Apollo was worshipped as god of the woodlands. It seems that the worship of Apollo on this site began as early as the 8th century B.C. and continued until the 4th century A.D. The site has undergone many extensions and alterations in different periods. The majority of the monuments as they can be seen today belong to the site's 1st century AD restorations. A wall from which one could enter the site via the Kourion Gate and the Pafos Gate surrounds the sanctuary. Originally the site consisted of: a temple, traces of which survive in the foundations of the present temple; a circular monument, which was probably destined for processions or dances around a grove of sacred trees; and a formalized Archaic Altar and Precinct. During the Roman period the site was extended with the addition of the South and North Buildings, which may have been used for the display of votives or the accommodation of visitors. Terracotta figurines and pottery that were accumulated in the Temple from the 5th century B.C. to the Roman period were buried in the Votive Pit. A long street running from south to north leads to the Temple of Apollo Hylates, which was built in the Late Classical or Early Hellenistic period on the ruins of the Archaic temple. In the 1st century A.D. the temple was rebuilt with a different architectural style. A small building south of the Precinct may have been a priest’s house. Along the external east side of the walls are the Palaestra where athletes once exercised and played games, and the Baths.

This well - defined architectural complex in Cyprus offers insight into the development of a Cypriot rural sanctuary from the Bronze Age through to the end of paganism on the island. There were three fairly distinct building periods. The Archaic Sanctuary developed essentially in the 7th century B.C. while the Ptolemaic Sanctuary belongs to the 3rd century BC. Finally, the Roman Sanctuary dates to the 1st century A.D.
