Welbeck Estate Home to the Eccentric 5th Duke of Portland (1800-1879) known as the burrowing duke
All houses wherein men have lived and died
Are haunted houses. Through the open doors
The harmless phantoms on their errands glide,
With feet that make no sound upon the floors.????
The estate was mentioned in the Domesday Book, where it is recorded as belonging to Hugh FitzBaldric. Thomas de Cuckney founded the religious house in 1140. It was an abbey of Premonstratensian canons, dedicated to St James the Great.
Welbeck Abbey is an incredible grade I listed building that served as a country house residence for the various Dukes of Portland.

Chat with Claire Monk, Head Brewer at Welbeck Abbey Brewery
I was lucky enough to meet the wonderful Claire from Notts brewery, Welbeck Abbey. We've talked and emailed yet never met! Red Feather was in the regional Midlands Heat of Sainsbury's Great British Beer Hunt in Birmingham on Sunday and I happened to be judging. Fait accompli! PS I loved their blonde ale, Cavendish (5%)
Point to Point at Welbeck
The Grove and Rufford held their annual Point to Point meeting at Welbeck near Worksop on the 2nd March 2008. Welbeck Abbey was once one of the richest in England. Following Henry VIII's dissolution, it eventually came into the ownership of William Cavendish, grandson of Bess of Hardwick. Eventually the family acquired the title of Duke of Portland, and stories of the reclusive 5th Duke, who built numerous underground tunnels, abound.
