Driver’s Eye View - Dunedin Railways - The Seasider - Dunedin to Waitati
Dunedin is one of the “must visit” places on New Zealand’s South Island. There is the highly scenic “Otago Peninsula” with penguins, albatross, New Zealand fur seals and much more to see, as well as two world class train rides starting from Dunedin’s magnificent station on most days.
In this video we enjoy awesome vistas across pristine sandy beaches normally reserved for the driver/engineer as our train makes its way along a narrow ledge cut into cliffs high above the turquoise sea and white sandy beaches far below.
I owe a massive thank you to Dunedin Railways for allowing me to place a camera in the driver’s cab for both the outward and return legs between Dunedin and Waitati.
I’ve just read about the tours offered by Dunedin Railways, they take New Zealand rail based holidays seriously, not just the stunning Taieri Gorge line, but the whole of the South Island. Please click on this link to see how Dunedin Railways can show you the scenery only rail passengers get to see -
Don’t tell my wife, but now I’ve seen the holidays on offer, I’m already planning a return trip to South Island.

Dunedin Railways - The Seasider Excursion (HD)
Dunedin Railways operate trains over the scenic Taieri Gorge Railway from Dunedin to Pukerangi behind Dj class diesel locomotives everyday of the year. Also another side trip out of Dunedin run by Dunedin Railways is The Seasider excursion which runs along the Main South Line north from Dunedin to Palmerston. The line runs along the Otago harbor and climbs above the Pacific Ocean before dropping into Blueskin Bay and Waitati. It then climbs to Warrington and Seacliff and while it drops again to Merton you get another stunning view of the ocean. Then the line curves inland through the countryside before arriving into the town of Palmerston where passengers have a 50 minute stop before the train returns to Dunedin. Here we follow this scenic train trip to Palmerston where we leave it after its departure for Dunedin. Enjoy the sound of Dj class locomotives working the grades the spectacular Pacific Coast Railway!

Today we are rushing to the Dunedin Railway Station because today we are taking the train on the Taieri Gorge Railway with Dunedin Railways!
The day starts at Dunedin’s most-photographed building, the Dunedin Railway Station, and we jump on board the vintage Taieri Gorge Train in Dunedin. It’s one of three train journeys in Dunedin.
Like the name suggest, the Taieri Gorge Railway takes us along the Taieri River with lots of tunnels and viaducts along the way. Not to mention the views of this scenic train journey in New Zealand. If you’re wanting to take the train in New Zealand then the Dunedin Railways is worth considering.
Taking the train in Dunedin on the Taieri Gorge Railway brings up all the way through rural landscape to Pukerangi which is our turnaround point where we get to enjoy the train journey all over again. The activity is full day activity in Dunedin and also a great thing to do on a rainy day in Dunedin.
So what you think of the Taieri Gorge Railway? Would you add it to your Dunedin travel itinerary? LUK in the comments.

During the last weekend during the Spring of 2016, we capture Dunedin Railway's regular mainline tourist trains operating out of Otago's biggest city. We mostly catch up with the Mitsubishi Electric built Dj diesel-electric locomotives hauling vintage carriages carrying tourists up the Taieri Gorge Railway to Pukerangi but we also follow the luxury Silver Fern Railcar operating the 'Waitati Seasider' north of Dunedin and high above the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy the sound of 1968 Dj locomotives working hard and the Silver Fern making light work throughout Dunedin city and some beautiful Otago scenery!
EXPLORING DUNEDIN'S spectacular RAILWAY STATION (NEW ZEALAND, South Island) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go for a brief tour of New Zealand's most photographed Building, the magnificent Railway Station in the city of Dunedin in the beautiful South Island. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. New Zealand is an island nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses – that of the North Island, or Te Ika-a-Māui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu – and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga.

Exploring PORT CHALMERS (DUNEDIN) & NCL Jewel Leaving l New Zealand Cruise Vlog l Ep. 10
Now that we are back from our excursion, it is time to explore Port Chalmers. If you are visiting here on a cruise ship and you are not wanting to do a shore excursion, I highly recommend taking the shuttle to Dunedin. As you'll see in the video, there is not a whole lot to do in Port Chalmers. As always, make sure to watch in HD for the best video quality! Hope you enjoy! :)

Dunedin Railways Seasider Complete Return Trip
Take a ride on the back platform of The Seasider operated by Dunedin Railways. The journey begins at the train's turnaround point in Waitati and ends at the Dunedin Railway Station in central Dunedin. Highlights include four tunnels, including the 1.32km Mihiwaka tunnel, Port Chalmers, Blueskin Bay, and the Otago Harbour. A view like this from the rear vestibule is rare as every day of the week other than Saturday, the train is operated using the Silver Fern, which is a self-propelled two car set that has no external vestibules. I apologize for any shakiness in the video as I had to freehand the filming.
