Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

SUMMARY
=======
Timothy Pickering (July 17, 1745 – January 29, 1829) was a politician from Massachusetts who served in a variety of roles, most notably as the third United States Secretary of State under Presidents George Washington and John Adams. He also represented Massachusetts in both houses of Congress as a member of the Federalist Party.
Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Pickering began a legal career after graduating from Harvard University. He won election to the Massachusetts General Court and served as a county judge. He also became an officer in the colonial militia and served in the Siege of Boston during the early stages of the American Revolutionary War. Served as Adjutant General and Quartermaster General of the Continental Army during the war. After the war, Pickering moved to the Wyoming Valley and took part in Pennsylvania's 1787 ratifying convention for the United States Constitution.
President Washington appointed Pickering to the position of Postmaster General in 1791. After briefly serving as Secretary of War, Pickering became the Secretary of State in 1795, and remained in that office after President Adams was inaugurated. As Secretary of State, Pickering favored close relations with Britain. President Adams dismissed him in 1800 due to Pickering's opposition to peace with France during the Quasi-War.
Pickering won election to represent Massachusetts in the United States Senate in 1803, becoming an ardent opponent of the Embargo Act of 1807. He continued to support Britain in the Napoleonic Wars, famously describing the country as The World's last hope - Britain's Fast-anchored Isle. He left the Senate in 1811 but served in the United States House of Representatives from 1813 to 1817. During the War of 1812 he became a leader of the New England secession movement and helped organize the Hartford Convention. The fallout from the convention ended Pickering's political career. He lived as a farmer in Salem until his death in 1829.

Dowhill Castle & The Viaducts
The first part of this video details my search and subsequent explore of Dowhill Castle, which has a lot going for it. Most old castles I've come across don't have much left bar some walls but this place is full of character with many rooms and multiple staircases to explore. Unfortunately, there's not much information going about the place but hopefully the video will convey just how much this old castle has going for it.
Since I was in the area, I also visited the Leslie Viaduct, which dominates the landscape just south of it's namesake town. The last time I came to the Leslie Viaduct was in January where I comprehensively photographed the structure. The resulting photos ended up on Forgotten Relics to supplement the article written by Forgotten Relics' owner. If you haven't already, take a look at the site as contains a wealth of well written and interesting articles about the UK's abandoned railway infrastructure, complemented by top notch photography*.
On all my previous visits to the Leslie (or Cabbagehall) Viaduct, the field below has provided a great vantage point in which to photograph and get a proper feel for the sense of scale the viaduct holds. However, on this visit, there were cattle below the viaduct so I just viewed it from a distance before retreating. As it happened, the head cow decided it had to get some retribution for my invasion of it's field so as I was returning to my car, said cow was angrily mooing at me and following me along the wall. Thankfully, I don't think it was capable of crossing the wall but I wasn't taking my chances. After I took shelter on a nearby road bridge, the cow eventually retreated and I made my escape.
The final stop of the day was Lower Largo, which unlike most villages in the East Neuk area, benefits from being crossed by a substantial viaduct. The Railway Inn is also a great pub and well worth a visit if you happen to spend any time in Lower Largo.
*I should mention that I was referring to the Forgotten Relics site owners' photos being top notch. He's a great photographer and I greatly appreciate all the light painting tips I've picked up from him on the few occasions we've met. I doubt my underground photography would be what it is today without all his great advice.

DRS Class 37s 37194 & 37604 on the Northumbrian Explorer at Pontefract Baghill 18 May 2013
On a more miserable day than when I saw No.46233 exactly a week earlier, I was back at Baghill station to film Pathfinder Railtour's Northumbrian Explorer on May 18.
The train ran from Bristol Temple Meads via the Cross-Country Route and the East Coast Main Line to Alnmouth in Northumberland.
The train was double-headed by two DRS Class 37s (or Tractors), 37194 and 37604 and the train is seen tearing north through the station.
