UK - GWR Hall heads The Shakespeare Express, 9th August 2015
Great Western 4965 Rood Ashton Hall heads The Shakespeare Express on its last working of the day, past Stratford-upon-Avon Parkway station on 9th August, 2015.
The train had done two return workings between Birmingham and Stratford through the day as a tourist service.
The sequence starts with a London Midland Class 172 diesel unit heading into Stratford-upon-Avon.
West Midlands Railway 172339, Stratford Upon Avon to Birmingham Moor Street - 23/03/2019
Filmed on 23/03/2019. For another train ride but on an usual class in the Turobstar fleet. In 2012, the latest edition of the class 172's were introduced into service replacing the class 150/1 which were transferred to either Northern or Great Western Railway. The 172's are unique to say the least with a compatible top speed of 100 MPH but because these are fitted with ZF gearboxes, these make them better and more economical. This means they are highly suited on fast and local stopping diagrams.
The train we ride on is 2W80 which is the 14:03 West Midlands Railway service from Stratford Upon Avon to Stourbridge Junction, taking the train as far as Birmingham Moor Street. The diagram is shown of the calling points:
Stratford Upon Avon
Stratford Upon Avon Parkway
Dorridge
Windey Moor
Solihull
Olton
Acocks Green
Birmingham Moor Street
Also, Chiltern Railways also operates services from Stratford Upon Avon to Leamington Spa.

Summer Stratford Steam Specials - Shakespeare Express & Merchant of Avon - 2019
2019 saw Vintage Trains starting their summer Sunday trips - The Shakespeare Express - from Birmingham to Stratford up and running again after not running them since 2017 as well as West Coast Railway Company starting up Sunday trips to Stratford Upon Avon from Burton Upon Trent - The Merchant of Avon. These tours ran over alternating Sundays from July through to September. This video capture four of the charters/specials with 4 different locomotives.
The video starts with LMS 45596 'Bahamas' at Stratford-upon-Avon with Vintage Train's Shakespeare Express. The first return is seen at Stratford Parkway where the Jubilee accelerates through away from the central station. The afternoon return is seen from a footbridge in Shrewley as Bahamas gets back up to speed after joining the Chiltern Mainline at Hatton North Junction.
Two weeks later and it's back to Stratford-upon-Avon for GWR 7029 'Clun Castle's turn on VT's Shakespeare Express. The Castle is seen powering through Lapworth on it's first return run. Later in the day, 7029 races through Widney Manor returning back to Birmingham.
The next Sunday and it was the first Merchant of Avon I was able to see with 48151 (turning out to be it's final tour before going for overhaul). The day starts at Wychnor Junction where the 8F is almost at top speed after departing Burton Upon Trent. The next shot is at Water Orton where 48151 is seen powering away from the Coleshill Parkway stop. Final shot of the outward run is seen at Wilmcote where the 8F gently chuffs through. 48151 is then seen on it's turning move round Hatton triangle at Hatton station and crossing the canal near Lapworth. The return is seen at Wilmcote where 48151 crests the summit while priming and at Water Orton with 31128 piloting due to a fire risk.
The final day of summer steam to Stratford was Sunday 22nd September with LMS 45699 'Galatea' working WCRC's Merchant of Avon. The jubilee is first seen powering up the bank past Elford/Portway Lane. She is then seen powering through Water Orton changing tracks before the station. The next shot was at Wood End where 45699 coasts through into the tunnel. The last shot of the tour and video is Galatea roaring up the bank away from Henley in Arden past Blunts Green. The jubilee could be heard for a good 5 minutes before her passing and a few minutes after! A brilliant end to a summer of steam specials in the midlands!!
The Shakespeare Express - 6201 Princess Elizabeth - 1st July 2012
July is here and that means the Shakespeare express season kicks off and to kick start the proceedings we have 46201 Princess Elizabeth on one of her last outings before she is withdrawn from the mainline,The Princess is first seen climbing up the incline through the tunnel from Moor Street Station and is seen making a glorious entrance into Snow Hill Station running five minutes early . Shortly after Lizzie is seen running through Shirley station tender first on it's first outing of the day to Stratford Upon Avon . On it's first return from Stratford we see 46201 Pass over the birdcage bridge at Olton before cutting off steam and passing through elegantly through the station bang on time as it usually does . And are final shot of the Princess is seen powering through the stunning village of Lapworth hope you enjoy today's coverage and keep a look out for my weekly footage of the Shakespeare express right through till september .
45596 Bahamas with the Shakespeare Express 04/08/19
LMS Jubilee 45596 Bahamas would haul Vintage Trains' Shakespeare Express hauling two trips from Birmingham Snow Hill to Stratford-upon-Avon. We start off at Dorridge to see the first run back to Birmingham then we overtake her at Tyseley and see her at Birmingham Moor Street. We then see the run around and second trip to Stratford at Birmingham Moor Street. we then head to Lapworth for the final shot of 45596 speeding through. Thanks For Watching!

Shakespeare Express
description
The Shakespeare Express & Merchant of Avon: 21st July - 15th September 2019
The summer of 2019 in the UK saw two railtour operators run day trips to the historic town of Stratford upon Avon using their steam locomotive fleet. The operators were West Coast Railways with their 'Merchant of Avon' railtour from Burton upon Trent to Stratford upon Avon, and Vintage Trains, which ran their well known 'Shakespeare Express' railtour from Birmingham Snow Hill to Stratford upon Avon twice a day. I've also gone the extra mile with this video, and have edited all the clips featured as to enhance them to make them look better, which I hope will award you with a better viewing experience. Other than that, I hope you enjoy the video.
In this video, we first look at the 'Shakespeare Express' at various points across the route it ran on. The locomotive primarily used for these trips was newly overhauled ex-BR Built GWR Castle Class No. '7029, Clun Castle'. However, the 4th of August saw a different locomotive rostered for the day, and this was ex-LMS/BR Jubliee Class No. '45596, Bahamas', which was based at Vintage Trains main base at Tyseley for a short while to operate a few railtours. This was also the final time the locomotive was operated out of Tyseley before returning to its home base at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.
Next, we view the 'Merchant of Avon', as with the 'Shakespeare Express', on various points of the route it ran on. Originally, the trip included a return journey from Stratford upon Avon to Birmingham Snow Hill, but due to issues to which I am unknown of, this part of the railtour did not go ahead, and only the return trip from Burton upon Trent to Stratford upon Avon was operated. This railtour saw two locomotives operate the trips. The first two were operated by ex-LMS/BR 8F Class No. '48151', and the final two trips were operated by ex-LMS/BR Jubliee Class No. '45699, Galatea'. It's also worth noting that the 25th of August 'Merchant of Avon' trip would be the last railtour 8F '48151' would operate before being retired for a general overhaul.
Overall, whilst I was not able to capture every 'Merchant of Avon' or 'Shakespeare Express' that was operated during the summer, I believe that I recorded as much footage as I was able to. Hopefully, next years season will be even better, and hopefully, we will see even more variety of steam traction operate through the West Midlands and Warwickshire.

Shadow Shakespeare | The Shakespeare Express - 27th August 2017
The penultimate Shakespeare Express for 2017 still didn't show with 4965 'Rood Ashton Hall' at the front, with ongoing gauging issues still sidelining the loco. So for another week Tyseley's flagship Castle, 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' makes another spirited run of the Shakespeare Express.
With work in the morning, I could only make the one shot but was determined to give Lapworth a go. The shadows from the blistering sun didn't hamper the shot as much as I thought as the Castle blasts through the station as it heads back to Birmingham.
The Shakespeare Express, 24/08/14.
The Shakespeare Express is run, by Vintage Trains, every Sunday during July and August. It runs from Birmingham Snow Hill to Stratford-Upon-Avon twice. Check out the Vintage Trains website for details.
In the bid to find new locations to film the Shakespeare Express, I went for the canal option.
The first shot is at Edstone Aqueduct, built in 1816, and the longest in England. It is close to Bearley, a few mile north of Stratford-Upon-Avon. A shot of the Shakespeare passing underneath the Aqueduct and then a day hire barge passing over it.
The next canal location is Kingswood Junction (Lapworth), where the Mainline passes over the Grand Union canal. Short shot, but great sounds. Typically, there were loads of barges going up and down, until the train arrived - not a barge in sight then!
These shots are a bit different for me, but I think they work. Hope you all like it.

4965 Rood Ashton Hall - The Shakespeare Express - 25/08/13
With August 25th's Royal Duchy cancelled I took the opportunity to go out and see Vintage Train's 'Shakespeare Express', their regular Summer Sunday train which runs from Birmingham Snow Hill to Stratford-Upon-Avon and back. Running via Henley-In-Arden on the outward trip and via Lapworth on the return, it makes this trip twice during the day. Interestingly it's one of the few runs that sees regular tender first running on the mainline. The rostered loco for this run came in the form of GWR 4900 'Hall' Class 4-6-0 no.4965 'Rood Ashton Hall', this would be the first time I've seen her running solo as I usually see her paired with 5043 'Earl Of Mount Edgcumbe'. Our first stop of the day would be to Henley-In-Arden Station and before 4965 arrives we take a good look around where we see features such as the original station name board, the pine trees which were a feature on many Great Western stations, and the now derelict former up bay platform which used to be served by local services to and from Birmingham. 4965 soon arrives for her booked two minute stop, this should have given me plenty of time to get some close ups of her. I managed to get one of the nameplate and as I went to get another of her cylinders she whistled up to leave, turns out I didn't have as much time as I thought! She then departs, giving that distinctive 'Hall' exhaust beat which has a slight squeak or whistle to it. The next shot sees 4965 a few miles south of Henley-In-Arden at Wootton Wawen on her second trip, where I'm able to get a good low down shot from the footpath leading up to the station, although the pan isn't the best as I caught my arm on the fence.
Moving on to the two smokebox first shots now and the first shot takes us to a bridge just south of Wilmcote Station and situated close to the Stratford-Upon-Avon Canal. As shown in the pre-train shots the bridge is rather tall, so I had to do a rather awkward setup in order to film from it (Here it is: After having a look around 4965 makes her appearance around bend on the first run of the day, slogging up the 1 in 75 gradient that is Wilmcote Bank, the summit being near the station not far behind us. I believe the slow ascent was due to the clearance issues at Wilmcote Station rather than the climb itself. Our second smokebox first shot and final shot of the takes takes us to Lapworth Station, a place I've wanted to see steam through for several years now, all the way back to when I used to watch the videos of the Shakespeare Express on Vintage Trains' website back in 2004/5. It certainly didn't disappoint as 4965 is seen storming through, still accelerating from Hatton Junction with a superb performance to end a lovely day's chasing steam.
Filmed on a Panasonic HDC-HS900 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone.
Enjoy.
GWR 4965 - Powers Away From Dorridge - The Shakespeare Express 2016
4965 'Rood Ashton Hall' makes only it's second appearance this year on the Chitern line on the Shakespeare Express. This is due to ongoing engineering works at Dorridge. 4965 is firstly seen working away from 15mph TSR through Dorridge station (A New Angle !) and then further later at Widney Manor. 5043 should haul next weeks train. Hope you enjoy !
