The Shell grotto (made from 4.6 million shells, of various types and sizes) was discovered in 1835 while digging through the foundations of the house above as part of major renovations.
An Enigma; there is no dating evidence, reference to the grotto in any historical records or any other clues as to who built it, when they built it or for what purpose it was built.

The Shell Grotto in Margate. Located in the middle of a neighbourhood I was surprised at how much detailing their was with the Shell Decoration and how large it was inside. There is no history about the Grotto other than the fact it was found in 1835.
