“THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE IN FRANCE IN THE SECOND HALF OF 1915 - LOOS”
AN EVENING TALK BY MICHAEL ORR
23 SEPTEMBER 2015 IN THE KINCAID GALLERY, RGJ (RIFLES) MUSEUM
On 15 September 1915 the French launched two simultaneous offensives against the Germans in Artois and Champagne that continued until being abandoned on 4 November. The British, after some argument, agreed to participate by committing Sir Douglas Haig’s First Army to attack at Loos (25-28 September). This was the first occasion during the war that the British used gas on the battlefield. The overall result of the attack, for a variety of reasons, failed to achieve success.
By September 1915 the war on the Western Front had been in progress for a year. One hundred years on, less is remembered about what happened in 1915 than in any other year of the war. It seems timely, therefore, that this evening talk should be focused on reminding us.
The talk will be delivered by Michael Orr, a former lecturer at RMA Sandhurst. He has spoken previously at the Museum on the subject of ‘Chateaux Generals’.
The Battle of Messines - Explosion Beneath Hill 60 I THE GREAT WAR Week 150
In the early morning of June 7 the area around Messines Ridge is shattered by huge explosions beneath the German positions. Miners and sappers had dug tunnels and filled them up with tons of explosives. Up to 10,000 German soldiers are killed in this inferno. At the same time, the Romanian Army seems to be in shape for an attack against the Germans again and the 10th Battle of the Isonzo continues.

Reconstruction of the Norman Keep - Norwich Castle GCSE resource
Shooting Times test-fires a two-bore rifle
When you pull the trigger, it's like presiding over your own personal earthquake, remarked Giles Whittome.
This rifle was commissioned by the Royal Armouries for its own collection as an exhibition piece. with the creation of a piece of gunmaking history, a bespoke 2-bore blackpowder rifle.
A small group of nervous shooters headed out to the range, including gun auctioneer Nick Holt, feature film armourer Scott McIntyre (who has a professional eye for unusual firearms) and several inquisitive West London Shooting School instructors.
It is impossible to exaggerate the stance you have to adopt, said Giles, as he handed the 2-bore to Nick. You really have to lean in and keep the rifle solidly in your shoulder, otherwise you will be on your back. Nick aimed, and pulled the trigger.
What you notice most is the smoke. With a 12-dram load there was a mighty noise, impressive amounts of smoke, a huge kick and the sand down range exploded with a whooomph. The grin was expansive. Well, you can feel it, said Nick, and I'm fairly sure my teeth are still in.
It was time for Scott to take a shot. He upped the ante and chose a 16-dram load — a real man. The explosion was bigger, huge clouds of smoke wafted but his reaction was entirely nonchalant. Yes, that'll be most effective, he commented drily. Not to be outdone, ST's photographer Paul Quagliana opted to fire
a 16-dram load and came away laughing.
