Batavia 1629 shipwreck and body at West Australia Museum Shipwreck Galleries Fremantle
These are the timbers of the lower part of the rear port hull of the Dutch East Indiaman Batavia which was wrecked on the Abrolhos Islands in 1629. This led to a notorious killing spree ordered by the survivor Jeronimus Cornelisz who had been planning a mutiny. On display at the West Australia Museum Shipwreck Galleries in Fremantle. Highly recommded. If you want the full story read Mike Dash's Batavia's Graveyard which is one of the best maritime ripsnorting yarns ever written. This film shows one of the bodies found on the Abrolhos Islands with a cut mark in his skull. The stone gateway is a replica of the original which is at Geraldton Museum - it was being shipped out to the East Indies.

The Shipwreck Galleries
The Shipwreck Galleries at Cliff Street show Australia's earliest shipwrecks, and house world-recognised archaeology research and conservation.
Our famous Batavia Gallery is the main attraction of this Museum, but the Batavia Gallery isn't the only gallery in the Museum, we have galleries on the Dutch exploration, the Xantho Gallery and others for you to explore!
The Shipwreck Galleries in Cliff Street currently attract nearly a quarter of a million visitors each year, over 60% of them tourists from outside the State. It has been estimated that the new Museum could bring in up to half a million visitors once it is fully operational. This will be an important contribution to the commercial growth of Fremantle.

Batavia Gallery WA Shipwreck Museum
This is the centrepiece of the West Australia Shipwrecks Museum, located in Freemantle , about 20 km from Perth. The gallery houses the reconstructed remains of the VOC ship Batavia, excavated by archaeologists in around 1970.The remains of the ship’s stern were rebuilt in this gallery.
The gallery also features a skeleton of one of the people murdered on the Abrolhos Islands, a replica of the impressive portico façade–carried as cargo to be used as a grand entrance to the city of Batavia–a reconstruction of the Captain’s cabin, and numerous other artefacts recovered from the wreck.
There is an elevated viewing deck to look down upon the stern of the Batavia, and appreciate the size and scope of the wreck and gallery.

West part 1
The trip was inspired by my reading about the wreck of the Batavia which is a feature of the Old Shipwreck Museum at Fremantle, also the Museum at Geraldton. The Sydney Memorial at Geraldton was also of family interest.
We now knew that the trip to Cape York Peninsular was on, so to round off my adventures a trip to Steep Point was necessary. This trip was one of logistics, the car would need a service at some point and it is a interesting fact that I carried on the car thirty days of clothes (just about all the clothes I owned). I returned home with one change of clean clothes left, all the rest were now dirty laundry.
Pulling into ‘our’ campsite shy of Cocklebiddy I noticed I was not alone, there was another car and trailer some ways off to the east. I stopped in my spot for the night, and started to walk over towards him. He was walking towards me as well. We met; his first words were “I thought I was the only one who knew about this place”, I replied that I though the same. It transpired he never found ‘my’ way in; he came in from the west. He related he has never seen any other person in here, he was leaving his trailer (piled high with firewood) here, while he was to go onto Perth, picking the trailer up on his return journey in about three weeks time. This saved fuel and was far more convenient. He considered this ‘hidden’ safe to do so. When I left, next morning his car was gone, the trailer remained until his return, it was gone when I returned (homeward) a month later.
I knew that on this trip I would need a change of oil; I tried many places along the way to no avail. I always used Mobil oil, but do you think I could find a Mobil any where no way. Mick said “Valvoline was just as good”, I found a garage selling Valvoline oil “can you do an oil change for me”, “sorry I knock off soon for lunch”. “Well if I buy the oil off you can I do it out front?” “Do it across the road in the lay by, you will find a bucket for ya in the grass”, “trucks often have to do it on the run as well”.
The oil change went okay, as seen on the video (my mechanic took great pleasure in seeing me do this).

Places To Visit In Fremantle
Fremantle is a major Australian port city in Western Australia, located at the mouth of the Swan River. Fremantle Harbour serves as the port of Perth, the state capital. Fremantle was the first area settled by the Swan River colonists in 1829.It was declared a city in 1929, and has a population of approximately 27,000.
The city is named after Captain Charles Fremantle, the English naval officer who established a camp at the site on 2 May 1829.The city contains well-preserved 19th century buildings and other heritage features. The Western Australian vernacular diminutive for Fremantle is Freo. The Nyungar name for the area is Walyallup.
Fremantle is renowned for its well-preserved architectural heritage, including convict-built colonial-era buildings, an old jetty and port and prisons; presenting a variety and unity of historic buildings and streetscapes. These were often built in limestone with ornate façades in a succession of architectural styles. Rapid development following the harbour works gave rise to an Edwardian precinct as merchant and shipping companies built in the west end and on reclaimed land.
