SHOREHAM AIRFIELD ATTACK & SPITFIRE BIG WING (airshowvision)
Airshowvision present a mock airfield strafing attack and scramble situation from Shoreham airfield in Sussex, England.
A lone Messerscmitt 108 strafes the airfield, catching the RAF by surprise.
A pair of Hawker Hurricanes are scrambled to intercept the enemy aircraft, followed by a big wing of 5 Supermarine Spitfires of varying marques.
Once the BF108 is shot down we are treated to a demonstration by the big wing of Spitfires and a tailchase routine.
This video is a tribute to Brian Brown, the manager of a local airfield just 5 miles from me (which I have never visited!), who died during this scenario just 12 months later.
Spitfire Shoreham Airshow 2013 - Shoreham Airport
Spitfire filmed at the Shoreham Airshow in 2013, Shoreham Airport.
Turn up the Volume. Epic Sound.
Sadly the Airshow is no longer held as on Saturday 22 August 2015 11 people died when a 1950s Hawker Hunter fighter jet crashed on to the A27 in West Sussex.
As you can see from this footage the planes flew over that main road all the time.
May those people who died that day rest in peace. I grew up in Shoreham & drive along that road frequently, very sad.
The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries before, during and after World War II. Many variants of the Spitfire were built, using several wing configurations, and it was produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft. It was also the only British fighter produced continuously throughout the war. The Spitfire continues to be popular among enthusiasts; about 54 remain airworthy, and many more are static exhibits in aviation museums throughout the world.

WW1 Shoreham Army Camp horse shoe
'The Training for War' project organised by Worthing Museum in partnership with Worthing College is looking for physical and archival clues about the huge Shoreham Army Camp that was set up on the south coast of the UK in Sussex between 1914-1919. This project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
In autumn 2014 a local landowner offered a field for a metal detecting search. Students from Worthing College, under supervision from Archaeology South-East and Sussex Past archaeologists, found WW1 ammunition and buttons. The grandson of the landowner found an old horse shoe. Using expert advice from farrier Peter Ibbotson and historical images from Worthing Museum discover the hidden story of the WW1 horse shoe.
Historical images from Worthing Museum include:
Metal toy gun carriage with 5 horses made by W.Britains c1914.
Oil painting of a farm scene by unknown artist, c1880s.
Detail of British Army farrier on roadside in France from 'War Illustrated' magazine 12 Dec 1914.
Postcard of 60 pounder gun c1915.
Edited by exhibitions curator Hamish MacGillivray as part of occasional scrapbook style slideshow series about some of the stories from Worthing Museum. Thanks to Worthing Museum volunteers for photographs and the Lightbox gallery and museum for their advice.

The Avro Lancaster is the most famous and successful RAF heavy bomber of World War Two. It is a legend that lives on today and the contribution made by the aircraft and its crews to the freedom of our nation will, hopefully, never be forgotten.
An impressive total of 7,377 Lancasters were built between 1941 and early 1946. Of these, some 3,500 were lost on operations and another 200 or so were destroyed or written off in crashes. The vast majority of those Lancasters that did survive the war were simply scrapped when their services were no longer required, as the reverence in which the aircraft is now held had yet to develop to the point where their preservation seemed important.

The North American B-25 Mitchell is an American twin-engine, medium bomber manufactured by North American Aviation (NAA).
The design was named in honor of Major General William Billy Mitchell, a pioneer of U.S. military aviation. Used by many Allied air forces, the B-25 served in every theater of World War II and after the war ended many remained in service, operating across four decades. Produced in numerous variants, nearly 10,000 Mitchells rolled from NAA factories.[1] These included a few limited models, such as the United States Marine Corps' PBJ-1 patrol bomber and the United States Army Air Forces' F-10 reconnaissance aircraft and AT-24 trainers.

Silver Spitfire - Shoreham Airshow 2011
WW2 Veteran, Supermarine Spitfire LFIXe, MK356, of the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, displaying at Shoreham Airshow 2011.
Built at Castle Bromwich, Spitfire LFIX MK356 was allocated to the newly-formed 443 'Hornet' Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force at RAF Digby, Lincolnshire, in March 1944. MK356 soon moved with 144 Wing to Holmsley, near Bournemouth, then to Westhampnett (now Goodwood) and later to Ford in Sussex. On 14 April 1944 'MK' flew its first operational mission as part of a 'Rodeo' fighter sweep over occupied France, Fg Off Gorden Ockenden, Royal Canadian Air Force piloted by 20-year-old Canadian, Flying Officer 'Gord' Ockenden, who flew 19 'ops' in the aircraft. From then on, MK356 was involved in fighter sweeps and in attacking ground targets by dive bombing and strafing in the lead-up to the 'D-Day' invasion and in support of the landings and fierce fighting afterwards. In 60 days of furious flying and fighting, 'MK' flew 60 operational sorties, was damaged by enemy fire on three occasions and suffered three 'wheels-up' landings. On D-Day+1 (7 June 1944) during a beachhead cover patrol in MK356, 'Gord' Ockenden's flight engaged four ME Bf 109Gs on the deck. He fired at one of the '109's and saw his rounds hitting the enemy aircraft. His wingman finished it off and each pilot was credited with a half share of the kill. On 14 June 1944 the aircraft's third 'wheels-up' landing of the war ended its short but intense operational life, as the next day the Squadron moved to airfield 'B-3' in France and 'MK' was left behind to be collected and stored by a maintenance unit.
Post war, MK356 was used as an instructional airframe at RAF Halton until 1951, and then for the next 17 years was a 'gate guardian' at Hawkinge, Bicester, Locking and Henlow. 'MK' featured as a static airframe in the epic film Battle of Britain in 1968 and then joined the RAF Museum Reserve Collection. In January 1992 a complete restoration to airworthy status was begun by a team from St Athan. The refurbishment was completed in November 1997 when the aircraft flew again for the first time in 53 years, subsequently joining the BBMF.
Spitfire MK356 (Mk LFIXe) MK356 is presented as 'UF-Q' (MJ250) of 601 (County of London) Squadron, AuxAF. Unusually, this aircraft was finished in a silver, natural metal finish. 601 Squadron conducted ground attack, dive-bombing and strafing, operations in support of the Eighth Army's advance up through Italy, as well as some bomber escort sorties. The silver Spitfire was often flown by Flt Lt Desmond 'Ibby' Ibbotson DFC*. Tragically, 'Ibby' was killed on a test flight in another Spitfire, which crashed close to Assisi, Italy, in November 1944, one month after his 23rd birthday. MJ250 survived the war but was then scrapped.
