Potterheads: Pottery in the historic town of Yingge
We did some modern pottery in the traditional #pottery town of #Yingge. Booked the class on KKday but you can easily just book a class directly with Shu's Pottery.
Shu's pottery is located along Yingge old street(a pedestrian shopping street specializing in ceramic arts, pottery, porcelain, and other related products ranging all price points). We chose the Pottery Throwing and Kiln class where you get to keep one piece from the ones you made in said class. I highly recommend going for a day when you visit #taiwan

The crafts of San-xia Zushi Temple
Sanxia Zushih temple was built in 1769
The Main Hall of the Zushih Temple honors deity Chen Zhao Yin
The temple was refurbished in 1947 for the third time
The current look was achieved under the direction of painter Lee Mei Shu
The four-sided layout with a central courtyard is a majestically impressive style
The layered roof offers double dragon protection
And the intricate design of the ceiling is unique to Chinese temple architecture.
The roof design includes a rich and varied porcelain mosaic ridge.
The carved beams and painted pillars are a part of the art treasures of the temple.
This place is a national treasure featuring carving masters' finest works.
San-xia Zushi Temple
In Taiwan, if you want to organize an artful tour of a temple, we welcome you to visit San-Xia Zushi Temple. Back in 1947, Taiwan artist professor Lee Mei-shu led the third remodeling of the Ching-shui Zushi Temple. Under his strict demand to use traditional architectural carving styles, the temple won the title of Eastern Temple Art Hall.
A building like San-xia Zushi Temple is unprecedented in Taiwan and probably will never be repeated. Artisans of each generation will study and pass on the skill acquired here, and tourists in each generation will enjoy the same dream. The next time you visit San-xia Zushi Temple, don't forget to stop and appreciate this magnificent work of art.
one day trip in Sanxia
Final presentation for the course, Tourist guiding Sanxia and Yingge in foreign languages. The clip includes the brief introduction for Sanxia Old Street, indigo dying factory, and Li Mei Shu Memorial Hall.
Lee Mei-shu: Painting the beauty of life
Lee Mei-shu painted the beautiful blue sky with a streak of orange and an arched bridge with the water underneath reflecting off the light of dawn, to make a portrait of Sanxia scenery.
Her impressionistic paintings limned the local Taiwanese countryside while capturing the vivid lives of ordinary people.
A visit to the Sanxia Lee Shu-mei Memorial Museum is like a trip down the memory lane, with each painting telling a different story from the past.
Lee Mei-shu may be most praised for leading the reconstruction project of the Temple of SanXia. Many national treasure-level artists were invited to spend 30-plus years working on what some have called the Eastern carving Hall of Fame.
Lee Mei-shu's roots are in the countryside, thus she loves to present the sceneries of San Xia. Lee Mei-shu is a practitioner of beauty of life rather than just a painter!
Mrs. Lin's Lunar New Year in Taiwan 2016
Recently Mrs. Lin has traveled to her birthplace, Taiwan, to celebrate Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 8 of this year. She has taken some very interesting video footage of her trip and here are some of the highlights.
Taichung is Taiwan’s third largest city and is located in the west central of Taiwan. I traveled from Taipei via Taiwan’s High Speed Rail to suburb of Taichung. Since the city is located in the busy and crowded area of Taichung so I then transfer via regular train to arrive at the Taichung Railway Station where the city is located. There are many tourist spots as well as good foods to enjoy in Taichung so I had to pick and choose what I wanted to do in one day.
I started out from Miyahara. This place used to be an eye clinic founded by Japanese optometrist Takekuma Miyahara during the Japanese Occupation in 1927. After World War Two, it became a health center but was abandoned later until 2011 when a well-known pastry industry purchased and renovated this place. This is an attractive two story building made up of red bricks on the exterior and the inside looks like “Hogwarts Castle” in the scene of harry potter’s movie where tall wooden book shelves and such was built. Although this building has been repaired but it still preserves many of the original components. So what is Miyahara famous for nowadays? They are famous for their Dawn Cakes, Pineapple Cakes, ice cream and bubble teas and if you have time, you can enjoy all those above mentioned great food in their cafe upstairs.
Another place I visited in Taichung was Feng Cha Night Market, which claims to be the largest night market in Taiwan. Here you will find gazillion’s food and drink stands, restaurants, clothing, cellphone charms….etc and the best time to visit is of course after dark when everything becomes live.
Kaohsiung is the second largest city after Taipei and is located in the southern part of Taiwan. I spent two days there and had visited Fo Guang Shan (Buddha’s Light Mountain) which is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. This place is huge and there are over 10,000 Buddha statues around the temple. You have to see it to believe it yourself.
Another place I visited in Kaohsiung is the former British Consulate at Takao (now known as Kaohsiung). It was built in 1865 and lies at the peak of Shaochuantou and overlooking Xiziwan Bay and Port of Kaohsiung. Because of Taiwan’s unique history, this place has become a classic historical site.
Taoyan’s Yingge district, located on the northern part of Taiwan and one hour south of Taipei, is famous for the production of ceramic and an abundance of art studios and shops can be found here. If you like ceramic and pottery, you definitely will want to visit the Yingge Pottery Street or Yingge Old Street in Mandarin Chinese which boasts to have the largest ceramic production in Taiwan.
Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of Lunar New Year and it also marks the last day for New Year celebration. Traditionally Taiwanese hung out highly decorated lanterns but nowadays it has become extravagant with festivals decorated with elaborate and giant hand-sculpted soft glow lanterns. This year’s, the year of the monkey, Lantern Festival was held in Taoyuan with the theme of “Golden Monkey Offering Peaches” and I was lucky enough to enjoy thousands of handcrafted lanterns at Taoyuan.
Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival also happens to coincide on the same day as the lantern festival each year. I was able to join the crowd and watch the release of sky lantern, which is normally written with well wishes hoping to bring those individuals good luck throughout the year. Pingxi is a small town nestled in northeastern of Taipei and is best reached by train (normally in one and a half hour) because of the scenery along the way is amazing. This town is known for its sky lanterns and you will find many stalls around Pingxi old street and train station sell paper lanterns, miniature lanterns, food and fireworks. At night, hundreds of sky lanterns can be seen simultaneously launched everywhere around town. It’s quite a sky show and it’s totally worth the visit.
Taiwan is the land of good and tasty food. You can find food pretty much everywhere you go and will never be hungry there. One of the best small eats or xiaochi in mandarin (similar to snacks or fast food) can be found in the night market or street stalls. There are hundreds of choices and you will never be bored.

Taiwanese Stone Tea Pot Style
A complete tea set made from solid stone from Taiwan. A porous stone that can absorb some of the tea elements over time. Taiwanese style tea starts with pouring hot water over everything. It's a practice rather than a ceremony ...you don't have to do it with ritualized gestures and it's fine to splash the water around. Some Taiwanese have stone tea trays carved into mini traditional landscapes. I would like one but that would be a little heavy to check in the luggage.

7 Better Date Ideas (Part 1!)
I've been in Taiwan for over 3 years now and I'd like to think that I know my way around the city; places to go, restaurants to dine at, activities to do. But it wasn't until a few weeks ago that one of my great friends, Roxanne, from Yelp Taipei, approached me about finding fresher ideas for Valentine's Day.
Little did I know, she had a bit of a challenge up her sleeve! You see, she considers herself an expert on Taipei as well. And as always, I'm up for any kind of competition!
We decided to take couples around during Valentine's Day and see who the top dog really was!
Luckily no one was hurt, however, I was pushed into some hay and Roxanne was yanked out of a car (no worries, it wasn't moving). It was all fun and games though! We had a lot of fun discovering the unique activities Taipei has to offer.
