CORMORANTS & THE WEATHER BUOY Lake Simcoe June 2019 by OUTDOORSYGAL O
CORMORANTS & THE WEATHER BUOY Lake Simcoe June 2019 by OUTDOORSYGAL O
It's mid June and Johnny and I are accompanied by our friend Ben while we are on the maiden voyage this year with the boat out on Lake Simcoe to try jigging for lake whitefish and lake trout. Bass season in certain MNR fishing zones seems to be creeping up a bit too early in recent years. In Zone 16 males were still on their nests! Good sportsmanship and ethics are mentioned. See a link below to an eye opening video about bass spawning on John Whyte’s YouTube channel.
In our adventure, we drive close to Environment Canada's Weather Buoy.
After that, we go for boat ride past an alarming number of double-crested cormorants. Please see some links below to find out more and for some contact information so you can help reduce their numbers by writing and voicing your concerns.
A big shout out to Ellwood Epps for providing the sun protective hoodie shirt and my cap.
Ellwood Epps:
Also a big shout out to Ralph Cipolla for providing the photos of Ship Island in Lake Couchiching and to Heather Lewis for providing the photo of Hogg’s Island in Balsam Lake.
It was alarming to see the devastation that has been done in those areas. Thank you!

Simcoe County Remembers
The Simcoe County Archives is pleased to announce the launch of Simcoe County’s first consolidated First World War (WWI) honour roll to recognize fallen men and women who had connections to Simcoe County. Entitled Simcoe County Remembers, this virtual memorial contains the names of 1,006 men and women who died while in service or as a result of injuries sustained during WWI.
The memorial is the first known WWI honour roll in Simcoe County that centralizes multiple lists and sources into one database. Following the war, many of the region’s townships, towns, and villages established their own individual forms of commemoration—Simcoe County Remembers complements these existing public memorials with one consolidated list.
