The Bombing of Dresden in World War II & Slaughterhouse-Five: Kurt Vonnegut (1997)
Slaughterhouse-Five, or The Children's Crusade: A Duty-Dance with Death (1969) is a satirical novel by Kurt Vonnegut about World War II experiences and journeys through time of a soldier named Billy Pilgrim. More Vonnegut:
It is generally recognized as Vonnegut's most influential and popular work. Vonnegut's use of the firebombing of Dresden as a central event makes the novel semi-autobiographical, as he was present during the bombing.
A film adaptation of the book, also called Slaughterhouse-Five, was made in 1972. Although critically praised, the film was a box office flop. It won the Prix du Jury at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival, as well as a Hugo Award, and Saturn Award. Vonnegut commended the film greatly. Guillermo del Toro has confirmed his intention to remake the 1972 film, originally hoping to release it in early 2011;[18] but due to his previous involvement with The Hobbit, the date of release for a film adaptation was pushed back. Although Guillermo del Toro has since dropped out of involvement with The Hobbit, the possibility of a new Slaughterhouse-Five adaptation remains in question since it is not among several projects Del Toro is said to be working on as of Summer 2013.'.[19]
In 1989, a theatrical adaption premiered at The Everyman Theatre, Liverpool, in the UK. This was the first time the novel had been presented onstage. It was adapted by Vince Foxall, and directed by Paddy Cunneen. In 1996, a theatrical adaptation of the novel was premiered at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, IL. The adaptation was written and directed by Eric Simonson and included actors Rick Snyder, Robert Breuler, and Deanna Dunagan.[20] The play has been performed in several other theaters including a January 2008 New York premiere production at the Godlight Theatre Company. The operatic adaptation by Hans-Jürgen von Bose,[21] premiered in July 1996 at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Billy Pilgrim II was sung by Uwe Schonbeck.[22]
In September 2009 BBC Radio 3 broadcast a feature length radio drama based on the book which was dramatised by Dave Sheasby and which starred Andrew Scott as Billy Pilgrim and was scored by the group 65daysofstatic.
The Bombing of Dresden was an attack on the city of Dresden, the capital of the German state of Saxony, that took place in the final months of the Second World War in the European Theatre. In four raids between 13 and 15 February 1945, 722 heavy bombers of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and 527 of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) dropped more than 3,900 tons of high-explosive bombs and incendiary devices on the city.[1] The bombing and the resulting firestorm destroyed over 1,600 acres (6.5 km2) of the city centre.[2] Between 22,700 and 25,000 people were killed.[3]
Post-war discussion of whether or not the attacks were justified has led to the bombing becoming one of the moral causes célèbres of the war.[4]
A 1953 United States Air Force report defended the operation as the justified bombing of a military and industrial target, which was a major rail transport and communication centre, housing 110 factories and 50,000 workers in support of the German war effort.[5] Several researchers have claimed that not all of the communications infrastructure, such as the bridges, were targeted, nor were the extensive industrial areas outside the city centre.[6] Critics of the bombing argue that Dresden—sometimes referred to as Florence on the Elbe (Elbflorenz)—was a cultural landmark of little or no military significance, and that the attacks were indiscriminate area bombing and not proportionate to the commensurate military gains.[7][8]
Large variations in the claimed death toll have fuelled the controversy. In March 1945, the Nazi regime ordered its press to publish a falsified casualty figure of 200,000 for the Dresden raids, and death toll estimates as high as 500,000 have been given.[9] The city authorities at the time estimated no more than 25,000 victims, a figure which subsequent investigations, including one commissioned by the city council in 2010, support.

Uk pig slaughterhouse footage 2016
This morning we returned to a local slaughter house, this video shows them being herded from a holding pen into the killing room.
At the start of the video you can see pigs trying to escape the killing room, not surprising since they had just seen one of their brothers/sisters hanging upside down by his/her leg thrashing about on like a conveyer belt.
We were in this spot for about 5 minutes before we had to leave and saw a few pigs looking very much alive hanging on the conveyer belt, it was difficult to get footage of this as its so dark inside.
There didnt seem to be a problem with us being there when we 'just wanted a few pictures of some pigs' but when they realised we were trying to record inside they were not too happy.
The owner/manager? even came after us in her car after we had left. She was shouting 'you should be going to them Halal places, we dont have any cruelty here'.
No cruelty, really? All of the pigs in this video are now dead for no reason but human greed, how is this not cruelty?
Also, can you hear the man inside the killing room mocking the pigs crys in the first 6 seconds?
Edit: This was taken in preparation for Liverpool pig save, see more recent footage here;

UK: Six 'speciesism' activists arrested after storming Kent slaughterhouse

Five women and a man were arrested after storming Forge Farm Meats, a slaughtherhouse north of the English town of Royal Tunbridge Wells on Tuesday.
According to reports, the activists arrived in the early hours of the morning aiming to stop as many of the sheep inside being killed as possible, and then chained themselves to a tower in the slaughterhouse premises after hanging banners reading 'Shutdown Speciesism.'
We want an end to this system of violence that is killing animals in their trillions worldwide every year, a system that needs to be shattered basically, it's gone long enough unchallenged, these guys are getting away with literal murder, said activist Graham Carper.
The group have said they would end the blockade if all the animals which were due to be slaughtered were sent elsewhere and that they themselves would be let go without charges.

Liverpool Pig Save
Yesterday I attended my first Liverpool Pig Save. My heart is heavy but hopeful. We are a nation of animal lovers fiercely against animal cruelty yet we rarely think about where our food comes from.
The plight of animals is hidden by the meat and dairy industry and from an early age we begin to value some animal's lives over others. These deeply ingrained beliefs about animals role in society prevent us from seeing how our every day choices impact sentient beings.
RSPCA assured meat and the Red Tractor scheme appeal to our compassion nature promoting the idea that the animals we consume lead good lives. Although some guideline ease some animal suffering, e.g. RSPCA approved pork states pigs must not be confined in farrowing crates, undercover footage frequently shows these standards are often not adhered to.
Most animals are factory farmed and regardless of 'high welfare' labels all animals experience immense fear and suffering in a slaughterhouse. How would our pets feel inside an abattoir?
We have a choice to reduce animal suffering simply with the food we purchase. Social media is rapidly exposing what the meat and dairy industry try to hide meaning the number of vegans in Britain has risen by 350% in the last ten years.
You may think it will be too difficult or too much of an inconvenience to become vegan but please consider your inconvenience in comparison to what animals experience in slaughterhouses.

Slaughterhouse I Ain't Bullshittin (with lyrics)
Off the House Rules Mixtape.
[Hook]
I ain't made it this far fuckin' round stankin' ass bitches
I ain't made it this far slippin'
So I ain't 'bout to start right now
Said I ain't bout to start right now, I ain't bullshittin'
I ain't made this much money doin' bad business
Or listenin' to stupid ass, goofy ass niggas
So I ain't bout to start right now
Said I ain't bout to start right now, I ain't bullshittin'
[Verse 1 : Royce Da 5'9]
Never hesitate to up-and-touch your foes jaw
Bullet proof vest on fuckin' hoe's raw
Only fear I have is being a has-been
Only thing I care about is just who's been laughin'
Dig a hole, make a box for soon as this craft ends
Or just put my ass in rehab with Charlie Sheen, three tabs
And some Jin for you to get madden in
We gon' sniff enough blow in here to kill two and half men
Niggas think I came off fast in this game laughin' at lames
With a map of an immaculate passageway this spectacular fame
That's how they do you every time, they think you're fake
You ain't the truest until you make the papers then they sue you
That's when I tell you bitch to do it for this vine
She ain't gon' never say to me, she ain't gon' do it
Toast along journeys, I ride separate, only problem that I have
With the big motherfucker's a wide stretcher, in long gurney
Then you're gon' see a murder case deflate
When my attorneys apply pressure
[Verse 2 : Joell Ortiz]
And press your bust pipes but I bet ya'
This pipe gon' bust a motherfucker head
If ever I catch her, why I disrespect her
Behind the scenes after playin' the side lines
Dressed up in thug attire when they soft as a signal
When that Wi-Fi messed up, this a hot spot
Yeah right hater, play hop scotch or hot twot
I'm hot
[Hook]
[Bridge]
Why in the fuck would I listen to haters?
Knowing damn well let 'em fuck with my paper
'til I die, I only listen to Crooked I
[Verse 3 : Crooked I]
I ain't bullshittin'
I keep it raw niggas rhymes deluded
Prostitutin' for the label nigga your mind's polluted
Go ahead try and dispute it
They buildin' an army full of niggas willin' to sell their soul and they asshole
That's the kind recruited, a sucker born every second time's computed
Just grab a nine and shoot it
Hyper-feminine rapper claim your troops
Let you lynch me in the orchard before I hang with fruit
Unless they of Islam, I'm just sayin' the truth
Rather hear me rappin' bout bitches givin' brain in a coupe
I know, but I'm ill a G, like make it some trilogy
Not three movies I mean something that Pimp C would say, a trill-a-G
And I'm sicker than mixin' liquor with Henney-cillin
I'm chillin' in my coupe with no roof and I could see the moon shinin'
Like whiskey in Tennessee
No Jordan but a brick or key is 23
I'm the biggest thug of them all with a street poetry
I leave blood on the wall so the streets know it's me
Crooked I, last rapper that won't compromise
Real nigga, they probably want me ostracised
I'm the nigga you can't colonize, not for dollar signs
I don't care if my profit rise, long as I prophesize
Long as I'm the non-fiction documentary and you the nigga that dramatized
No need to apologize, put your sorries in your big pocket
Make up a dance to have a chance nigga, I rather Big Pac it
I'd rather Pun L it, I'd rather Beans Jay it, I rather Em Nas it
I don't listen to you goofy niggas take on it
That's why the beemer got the temporary plates on it
That's why XXL got your nigga's face on it
It's 97 Bad Boy, this my Mace moment
(Amen)
Vegans enter Tulip Slaughterhouse in Manchester
Yesterday Manchester Pig Save activists entered Tulip Slaughterhouse in Ashton to document the plight of farmed animals hidden by the meat industry who claim to care about the welfare of animals.
Violently killed in CO2 gas chambers, all these animals will now be labelled as 'RSPCA Assured' or 'Red Tractor Approved' and delivered to Waitrose, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Lidl and Morrisons.
Please message our Facebook page if you would like support progressing towards a nonviolent, vegan lifestyle.
Our next vigil will take place on Monday 26th September- Everyone is welcome!
