Discovering China - The Song Dynasty
After the collapse of the Tang Dynasty, over 50 years of Chaos followed, until a military general named Zhao Kuangyin founded the Song Dynasty, reigning as emperor Taizu.
The Song Dynasty started in the year 960 AD and lasted for over 300-years. It can be split into two periods the Northern Song starting in the year 960 and then from 1127 AD, after the north was invaded by the Jurchen tribes, the Southern Song.
When Emperor Taizu came to power, he expanded the civil service examination system and oversaw a project to map the entire empire. The Song saw a revival of Confucianism and greater prominence of the scholar official class.
But the Song wasn't as strong militarily as it's Tang dynasty predecessor, it couldn't establish it's self as the dominant power in Asia. Thus the Northern Song period was marked by frequent battles with neighboring kingdoms, these would eventually culminate with the Jurchen tribe to the north, who ruled the Liao dynasty, invading the Song and conquering the capital Kaifeng in 1127 AD, they then set up the Jin dynasty in the North of China.
So the Song dynasty moved south, and despite losing a large amount of territory, the Southern Song period was one of prosperity, with flourishing art and culture, as well as technological advancements.
During the Song, the government started to grant farmers ownership of land, which led to a huge increase in rice production. The economy started to change from a purely agricultural economy to a commercial one, with peasants selling their surplices to buy a wide range of goods, such as tea, coal, oil and wine. With the growth in the economy, so grew the population, hitting 100 million by the year 1100 AD.
Three of China's four great inventions originate from the Song Dynasty, namely: printing, the magnetic compass and gunpowder.

Chinese Martial Art Performance in Iron Pagoda, KaiFeng, Henan, China
The Iron Pagoda (Chinese: 鐵塔) of Youguo Temple (佑國寺), Kaifeng City, Henan province, is a Buddhist Chinese pagoda built in 1049 during the Song dynasty (960–1279) of China. The pagoda is so-named not because it is made of iron, but because its color resembles that of iron. It is a brick pagoda tower built on the location of a previous wooden one that had been burnt down by lightning fire in 1044. Along with the Liuhe, Lingxiao, Liaodi, Pizhi, and Beisi pagodas, it is seen as a masterpiece of Song dynasty architecture.

Kaifeng Impression 印象开封
Situated on the southern bank of the Yellow River, Kaifeng is an important city in Henan Province. With a recorded history close to 3,000 years, Kaifeng is known as one of the six major centers of ancient Chinese civilization. As early as the Yin-Shang period (1334-1066 B.C.), when Chinese society turned away from nomadic life to an agricultural existence, a city was built there. It then became the capital of the Kingdom of Wei in the Warring Sates Period (475-331 B.C.), the Liang, Han and Zhou dynasties of the five Dynasties (907-960), the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1137) and the Jin Dynasty (1115-1334). The Northern Song, in particular, established its capital in Kaifeng for 168 years.
The Eastern Capital, as Kaifeng was then called, was the political, economic and cultural center of the whole country, with well-developed handicrafts, bustling commerce and fine communication facilities. An old saying went that Kaifeng was unsurpassed anywhere in splendor and prosperity.
Repeated Yellow River floods, however, caused damage to the ancient capital of Kaifeng through the years. Many of its historical relics were destroyed. Among those that have survived are the Iron Pagoda, Pota Pagoda, Dragon Pavilion, Xiangguo Monastery, King Yu's Terrace and Yanqing Taoist Temple. These are all fine works of architecture. Their majestic beauty bears testimony to the wisdom and the cultural and artistic standards their creators attained.
The city today has well-developed commerce, transport, communications and educational facilities, and medical and public health services. The Yellow River that flooded its banks and wrought havoc for a thousand years has been harnessed. The Liuyuan Ferry at Kaifeng is now open to tourists as a scenic
Jewish Community.
It might be hard to believe. But there is indeed a large Jewish community in Kaifeng. The ancestors of these Jews were said to have arrived in China from Persia and India during the Tang Dynasty.
For centuries, the Jews of Kaifeng uttered the prescribed daily and Sabbath prayers, kept their religious holidays and observed strict diets.
Song City
Kaifeng was the Song Dynasty capital for many years. Ask your guide to take you to the Song City, a street flanked by small shops and taverns a thousand years ago.
The street is now under reconstruction on the old Imperial Street between the ancient imperial palace and another street called Sihoujie.
The palace has already been restored, and is open to the public. And another major part of the street, Xuandemen, will soon be completed.

Yue Fei's Temple in Zhuxian Town, Kaifeng, Henan Province, China -4
The painting depicting the Battle of Zhuxianzhen when in he defeated the Jin army in 1140 during the Song dynasty
General Yue Fei—Epitome of Loyalty and Filial Piety
The legend of the Chinese military General Yue Fei is one of enduring loyalty and patriotism. Yue Fei was remembered for his military successes, loyalty towards his country, and filial piety for his elderly mother.
Yue Fei was born in 1103—towards the end of the Northern Song Dynasty from parents who were humble farmers in what is today's Henan province.
As Yue Fei was growing up, China was constantly attacked from the north by the fierce Jurchen army. During this time, the Southern Song Imperial court urgently tried to enlist soldiers to defend the country.
Young Yue Fei was torn between going to fight for his country and staying home to care for his elderly mother.
One story has it that Yue Fei's mother encouraged her son to embrace the honor of defending his country. She asked him to take off his shirt and then tattooed four Chinese characters on his back: Jing zhong bao guo. It means to serve the country with loyalty.
After the Jurchens invaded the Northern Song capital of Kaifeng and captured the emperor in 1127, the emperor's younger brother escaped to establish the Southern Song Dynasty.
General Yue Fei became a symbol of hope during these difficult times. It was believed that once he led only 500 men and defeated the 100,000-Jurchen Army—forcing the enemy to retreat.
Yue Fei was not only known for his courage and bravery. He was a man with lofty moral principles. He cared for his soldiers and personally attended to them when they were ill. He helped their families, when they died in combat. But he was also strict with them and forbade them from plundering civilians in the towns they passed through.
Yue Fei was also remembered for his benevolence towards ordinary citizens. After suppressing a revolt soon after the founding of the Southern Song Dynasty, Yue Fei pleaded with Emperor Gaozong to spare the lives of the ordinary people in the town. He eventually convinced the emperor to only execute those who had started the revolt.
The story has it that Emperor Gaozong presented Yue Fei with a banner to honor his loyalty to the throne and to the welfare of the people.
But Yue Fei's military achievements made some corrupt palace officials jealous of him. They poisoned Emperor Gaozong against him. Yue Fei was thus recalled to the palace and stripped of his military duties.
A year later, in 1142 AD Minister Qin Hui sentenced Yue Fei to death on false charges. Yue Fei was only 39 years old at the time of his death. The public mourned the death of their hero and despised Qin Hui.
According to historical texts, 21 years after his death, Emperor Xiaozong acquitted Yue Fei and reinstated him as the loyal general. For their role in Yue Fei's death, iron statues of Qin Hui, his wife, and two other palace officials were made to kneel in front of Yue Fei's tomb.

Discovering China - Cai wenji, composer of the Eastern Han Dynasty
A talented and famous poet, Cai Wenji was born around AD 177 in Chenliu, in present day Kaifeng, Henan Province.
Cai was born into an intellectual family. She was the only child and daughter of Cai Yong—a Han minister, a well-known writer, poet, and a master calligrapher.
In ancient China, not many women had the opportunity of learning to read and write, unless they were daughters of high officials and nobles. Cai was born into such a family, it was thus natural for her father to pass on his knowledge and the art of calligraphy to his only child.
Cai grew up influenced by her environment, she studied and immersed herself in literature and arts. She was accomplished in calligraphy, history, literature, and music.
But Cai's life was marked with tragedies. At 15, Cai married her first husband, who died shortly after the wedding.
One story has it that the emperor, unimpressed with her father's warnings about the future of the Han when the Han Dynasty was on the verge of collapse, had sent Cai Yong back to his house outside of Chang'an city.
When the Xiongnu tribe attacked Chang'an, Cai was kidnapped and forced to marry a Xiongnu chieftain. While in captivity, she composed her famous piece, the Eighteen Lamentation that was performed on the Guqin or Chinese zither.
Twelve years later, the Han general Cao cao who was a friend of her father, paid a thousand pieces of gold and jade to negotiate for her return.
Upon her return to China, Cai married her third spouse. She then fulfilled her father's wish by finishing the compilation of the history of the Later Han Dynasty.
According to one story, Cai helped to reclaim a portion of her father's writings that were destroyed during the war-torn era. Cai was able to recite from memory about four hundred of the four thousand of her father's lost works.
Cai continued to compose poetry but her poems were sorrowful, nostalgic, and poignant—mostly dwelling on the misfortunes in her life.
In the five-character Poem of Sorrow and Anger, she wrote:
My dwelling is often covered by frost and snow,The foreign winds bring again spring and summer;
They gently blow into my robes, And chillingly shrill into my ear;
Emotions stirred, I think of my parents,Whilst I draw a long sigh of endless sorrows.
Whenever guests visit from afar,I would often make joy of their tidings;
I lost no time in throwing eager questions,Only to find that the guests were not from my home town.
Like father, like daughter—Cai was also an accomplished calligrapher. Many of her compositions were extolled along with her father's works of art.
Her legacy has been preserved in an ancient Chinese painting from the Jin Dynasty, in modern Chinese play, Beijing opera, and even in the Dynasty Warriors and Romance of the Three Kingdoms video games.
