A Walk Through Hastings Old Town! England, United Kingdom.
Hastings Old Town is an area in Hastings, England roughly corresponding to the extent of the town prior to the nineteenth century. It lies mainly within the eastern-most valley of the current town. The shingle beach known as The Stade (the old Saxon term meaning landing place) is home to the biggest beach-launched fishing fleet in Britain. Many events take place every year in the old town such as the Hastings Old Town Week, Jack In The Green, the Seafood and Wine Festival, and the Bonfire Procession. Many of these events are centred on Winkle Island, which is also the gathering place of the Winkle Club.

A Walk Through Hastings, England
Hastings is a town and borough in the county of East Sussex, within the historic county of Sussex, on the south coast of England. The town is located 24 mi (39 km) east of the county town of Lewes and 53 mi (85 km) south east of London, and has an estimated population of 90,254, which makes it the 66th largest settlement in the United Kingdom.
Historically Hastings can claim fame through its connection with the Norman conquest of England and because it became one of the medieval Cinque Ports. Hastings was, for centuries, an important fishing port; although nowadays less important, it still has the largest beach-based fishing fleet in Europe. The town became a popular spot for 'taking the waters' (therapeutic bathing in the sea) in the 1760s, and then, with the coming of the railway, a seaside resort.

Hastings Fishing Boats.
Home to the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Britain, the stretch of the beach known as the Strade in Hastings has been used as a fishing port for centuries.
The Stade is a shingle beach in Hastings Old Town. It has been used for beaching boats for more than a thousand years. It is now home to Europe's largest fleet of beach-launched fishing boats.
The word stade is a Saxon term meaning landing place.
The beach was originally a small landing area; hence the small footprint of the net shops. The building of the 1887 groyne at Rock-A-Nore and the 1896 harbour, however, stopped the eastward longshore transport of shingle along the coast, which is the function of groynes. As a result, the Stade steadily grew seaward, providing new room for the fishing fleet and necessary amenities

The ruins we can see today are the remains of a stone fortress (built after William of Normandy's coronation) which was practically impregnable from three sides. Less than half of the original structure remains.
During September 1066, William the Conqueror landed at Pevensey and ordered the construction of a prefabricated wooden castle. He then moved on to Hastings and erected another.
Hastings Castle was originally a wooden tower built on top of a man made mound or motte, which was surrounded by an outer courtyard or bailey. The bailey was enclosed by a wooden palisade. The Norman motte and bailey castle would become a common fixture across England following the conquest.
After the victory at the Battle of Hastings, William was crowned on Christmas Day 1066, and had issued orders that Hastings Castle was to be rebuilt in stone.

Driving Around Hastings, England - A Brief Visual Tour
Driving Around Hastings, England - A Brief Visual Tour
I spent a few holidays here as a kid and always loved going to Hastings to see my Uncle and was a totally different style of ocean town I was used to seeing here in Australia. My recent visit to the UK I decided to hire a car and head down from London to see what I remembered and was very happy I did as it was exactly like I had remembered except now the Hastings pier appears to have all been done up, a long cry from the nightclub that used to be out there prior to it becoming too unsafe for people to move about on it.
Hastings is a great place to check out if visiting the UK. Located about 2.5 hours driving from London on the Southeast coastline of the United Kingdom. Walking around is great and obviously along the beach front and Promenade but a must do is to check out the old smugglers adventure caves located a short walk from where the Hastings Castle ruins are situated that overlook the town centre.
If you are fan for history about The battle of 1066 and/or William the conqueror or more recently smugglers and all things pirates then you will have a great time in Hastings. Please leave us your comments about your experiences also!
