Haunting History of ~ The Star and Eagle Inn , Goudhurst, Kent, England
Goudhurst established itself on high ground around St Mary’s Church. The building was dedicated in 1119, although it is likely that a church has occupied the site since Saxon times
Dating back to the 14th century, the Star and Eagle has played a significant role in the local history, and was once reputed to have been an ancient monastery. Relics of the vaulted stonework of the period are still visible in some parts of the building.
During the 18th century the Inn became the headquarters of the Hawkhurst Gang, who robbed and terrorised the surrounding district, and planned smuggling raids.
Goudhurst
Local legend says that the spirits of injured smugglers can still be heard on quiet nights using the now bricked up secret tunnel as an escape route!
Youth Hostel - a Memory of Goudhurst.
I stayed here when it was a Youth Hostel. We had to sleep on the floor in a gallery with a large tapestry. One of our group swore that they saw a ghost during the night. I remember that there was a Priest Hole accessed through a cupboard in the corner of one of the upper rooms. The kitchen still had a lot of the original hooks and fittings. One of these was said to be where people were tied to be flogged. by Mike Tunstall
The Star and Eagle still sits cheek-by-jowl with the church at the top of the village. Spyways is a short distance down the hill on the same side of the road — a stout oak door up a few steps reminds the visitor that the house once served as the village jail. The battle took place at the top of the village, along the road leading in from Hawkhurst. Since Goudhurst is so picturesque, it attracts crowds on summer weekends. Park outside the village if possible.
By 1747 the Hawkhurst gang had extended their sphere of influence to include this pleasant village, where the gang used 'Spyways' on the main street, and the Star and Eagle Inn near the church. The unfortunate citizens of Goudhurst were, it seems, able to do little but comply when the Hawkhurst gang demanded horses, help or just money.
Eventually, though, the villagers rebelled, and organized a vigilante group to defend themselves from their unpopular neighbours. In April they formed the Goudhurst Band of Militia, an armed self-defense group led by a recently-discharged soldier. Despite attempts to conceal these plans, news of the Goudhurst group reached Hawkhurst, and the leader of the gang vowed to sack the village of Goudhurst and murder all the inhabitants. With extraordinary arrogance, the gang leader Thomas Kingsmill even made an appointment — April 20th.
When the Hawkhurst men appeared, stripped to the waist and armed to the teeth, Goudhurst was ready. GPR James gives a dramatized account of the battle in his novel The Smuggler. He describes how the villagers united, and prepared to defend themselves with ancient (and inaccurate) fowling pieces. On the day of the battle the women and children were sent to the next village, while the men gathered on the porch of the church, and cast bullets in the churchyard. The battle was short-lived: it's clear that the smugglers expected little resistance from the village, and turned tail when they suffered a few casualties.

Highlights from this years music festival held at the Star Inn, Pershore, Worcestershire on Bank Holiday Monday 6 May 2013. Artists listed to perform where Jennifer Ludlow, Tommy & Lucy, Gastric Band, Rufus, Assy Pasty and IDUNNOMASTE. Those featured in this short video where Tommy & Lucy, Rufus and Gastric Band. Some may have spotted Gaz Le Bass lead vocalist and bass player from the well known band The Delray Rockets who was taking time out to appear in Gastric Band. The weather could not have been better! Visitors to the festival where able to sit out in the gardens and enjoy music, food and drink. Many thanks to the Star Inn and those who came along to help set up the festival.
