Pyongyang: The Pyongyang Circus is a multi-function building located in Pyongyang, North Korea. It was completed in 1989. The circus has a floor space of 54,000 m2. There are facilities for acrobatics, synchronized swimming, stunts on ice, and animal performances. It is also one of the theatres used for the April Spring Friendship Arts Festival. North Korea, officially the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK or DPR Korea) (Korean: 조선민주주의인민공화국, Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia constituting the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, with Pyongyang the capital and the largest city in the country. The name Korea is derived from Goguryeo which was one of the great powers in East Asia during its time, ruling most of the Korean Peninsula, Manchuria, parts of the Russian Far East and Inner Mongolia, under Gwanggaeto the Great. To the north and northwest, the country is bordered by China and by Russia along the Amnok (known as the Yalu in Chinese) and Tumen rivers; it is bordered to the south by South Korea, with the heavily fortified Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two. Nevertheless, North Korea, like its southern counterpart, claims to be the legitimate government of the entire peninsula and adjacent islands. In 1910, Korea was annexed by Imperial Japan. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones, with the north occupied by the Soviet Union and the south occupied by the United States. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948, separate governments were formed: the socialist Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea in the north, and the capitalist Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–1953). The Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, but no peace treaty was signed. North Korea officially describes itself as a self-reliant socialist state, and formally holds elections, though said elections have been described by outside observers as sham elections. Outside observers also generally view North Korea as a Stalinist totalitarian dictatorship, particularly noting the elaborate cult of personality around Kim Il-sung and his family. The Workers Party of Korea (WPK), led by a member of the ruling family, holds power in the state and leads the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland of which all political officers are required to be members. Juche, an ideology of national self-reliance, was introduced into the constitution in 1972. The means of production are owned by the state through state-run enterprises and collectivized farms. Most services such as healthcare, education, housing and food production are subsidized or state-funded. From 1994 to 1998, North Korea suffered a famine that resulted in the deaths of between 240,000 and 420,000 people, and the population continues to suffer malnutrition. North Korea follows Songun, or military-first policy. It is the country with the highest number of military and paramilitary personnel, with a total of 9,495,000 active, reserve and paramilitary personnel, or approximately 37% of its population. Its active duty army of 1.21 million is the fourth largest in the world, after China, the United States and India; consisting of 4.8% of its population. It possesses nuclear weapons. Who says North Koreans don't pursue their dreams with exuberance and vitality?! Their love for acrobatics, performing arts, dance and music is absolutely admirable.
Love is God and God is Love.

P.S.
Chainsaw juggler and holder of two official Guinness World Records, gets one day an invitation to perform at a circus in North Korea organized to honour the birthday of president Kim Il-Sung. Joining Kurvinen is the most famous Finnish professional magician Jori A. Kopponen, who has always wanted to travel to an another planet.
The party is being held at the capital of North Korea, Pyongyang. The artists have asked two journalists to assist them on this trip. It is strictly prohibited for journalists to enter the closed country. Constant fear of getting caught, brainwash and culture shock hits on every member of the Finnish travel party, when they have to operate under constant surveillance.
Circus Pyongyang is a true story of a trip made by a Finnish artist entourage to the most closed state in the world, which is being presented as a terrestrial paradise for its western guests. The truth is something else. It's a trip to another planet, Circus Pyongyang.
Circus Pyongyang was an enjoyable read, hard to put down. The language flows nicely. Structure is well thought out. At times Circus Pyongyang reminded me of the odysseys of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson and his linguistic gimmicks.

North Korea, April 2008 /50 Pyongyang circus p1
I am not a Youtuber, but created this channel in order to share videos I had made on my trip to North Korea in April 2008. I am Russian, even though I lived in the US and the UK most of my life and hold British citizenship now -- but in 2008 I was working as a correspondent for a well-known Russian news outlet, and was able to go to North Korea undercover as part of the delegation for the society of proliferation of Juche ideas (it's a thing!). As Russians, we had relatively free unobstructed access, lived in the actual Pyongyang town centre, and were even allowed to walk around by ourselves (although we were, of course, followed). Most of the videos were made on official or accompanied trips or walks, but covertly, by a small pocket camera that was supposed to only take photos, therefore please excuse the poor quality.
I am also going to use an old domain name, unusualtravel.co.uk, to upload hundreds of photos that I have made inside North Korea on the same trip in April 2008.
Wrestlers bring fighting diplomacy to North Korea
In a rare display of public emotion in North Korea, foreign professional wrestlers bring circus-style mayhem to Pyongyang
Flamboyant Japanese wrestler-turned-politician Kanji Antonio Inoki kicked off his brand of sports diplomacy in North Korea Saturday in an unusual two-day event featuring martial artists from around the world.
Inoki, 71, an opposition member of Japan's upper house with a penchant for red scarves, has travelled to the reclusive state with a host of international fighters in an attempt to use sport to thaw relations between Tokyo and Pyongyang.
He met with North Korea's ceremonial head of state Kim Yong-Nam on Saturday, hours before the first night of the International Pro Wrestling Festival kicked off at Pyongyang's 20,000-seat Ryugyong Jong Ju-Yong Stadium.
Kim presides over North Korea's parliament, the Supreme People's Assembly, and often receives state guests or credentials from foreign ambassadors – an indication of how seriously Pyongyang is taking Inoki's visit.
I feel very grateful for your continuous efforts to promote mutual understanding between the two countries and create an environment toward improvement in Korea-Japan relations, the 86-year-old Kim told Inoki at the Mansudae Assembly Hall, Kyodo news agency reported.
Supreme leader Kim Jong-un, who is a keen sports fan, did not appear at the martial arts event as he did in January when former US basketball star Dennis Rodman sang Happy Birthday to him before an exhibition game.
Speaking at the opening, Inoki said that prompted by this international event, I am hoping that the door of Japan and (North) Korea that has been shut for a long time will be opened.
Inoki – who stands six feet three inches tall – has organised the festival with North Korea's authorities, taking along 21 grapplers from Japan, the US, France and Brazil as well as one from China, North Korea's communist ally.
They include Bob Sapp, a former American mixed martial artist and household name in Japan, Jerome Le Banner of France and Brazilian Montanha Silva.
When Inoki and his entourage arrived in Pyongyang via Beijing on Thursday, he held talks with Kang Sok-Ju, a key figure in North Korea's diplomatic circles and a secretary of the Workers Party.
North Korea's high-profile treatment of Inoki seems to indicate its readiness to improve ties with Japan, public broadcaster NHK said.
Inoki is best known abroad for battling then world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali in a zany wrestler-versus-boxer in Tokyo in 1976.
But he has also cultivated strong connections with the Pyongyang regime, having now made 30 trips since 1974 to the isolated state, the birthplace of his late wrestling mentor known by the ring name of Rikidozan who still remains a sporting legend in Japan and a national hero in North Korea.
His willingness to involve himself in Japan's diplomacy made headlines in 1990, when he helped secure the release of 41 Japanese hostages in Iraq during the Gulf War after meeting Saddam Hussein's son and staging a wrestling show in Baghdad.
In 1995, Inoki organised and competed in the first-ever pro-wrestling exhibition in North Korea, featuring matches between Japanese and US pro-wrestlers with an ailing Ali as a guest. He retired from wrestling in 1998.

???? Visit to the Strange Land of North Korea (DPRK)
This is a film about a traveller in the strange land called North Korea or officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Tours to the DPRK are tightly scheduled and normally include a visit to the demilitarised zone, museums and statues to Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il, Pyongyang’s amusements parks, chandelier-laden metro system and showcase entertainment facilities such as the Circus and the SchoolChildren's Palace. In addition to these, I took a flightseeing flight on a Mi-17 helicopter over the DPRK's capital city of Pyongyang. As well, as my tour was an extended one, it also went the northeast of the DPRK to the tri-country area around the Rason Special Economic Zone where the DPRK, China and Russia conjoin.
The cult of the Kims is perhaps the most extraordinary feature of the DPRK. Images or statues of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il are found everywhere. These graven images are effectively worshipped. This film shows scenes of the veneration of the Kims (Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il) that were witnessed.
The government guides control both what you can see and also what you can take photographs of. If you take a photograph of the military, construction or something that they feel does not portray the DPRK in a positive light then they force you to delete the photograph. On exiting the country, the border guards also reviewed photographs to see if they conformed to the aforementioned standards. Despite these restrictions, this film contains images that accurately portray the state of the country as I saw it.

Pyongyang: Pyongyang, Pyŏngyang or Pyeongyang, is the capital and largest city of North Korea. Pyongyang is located on the Taedong River about 109 kilometres (68 mi) upstream from its mouth on the Yellow Sea. According to the 2008 population census, it has a population of 3,255,288. The city was split from the South Pyongan province in 1946. It is administered as a directly-administered city (직할시; 直轄市; chikhalsi) with equal status to provinces, the same as special cities in South Korea (특별시; 特別市; teukbyeolsi), including Seoul.
