The State Tretyakov Gallery is Russia's leading art museum and boasts a huge collection of famous paintings. Many of its artworks are known around the world, while others are more obscure, so let’s take a look at five iconic paintings that you may not be familiar with.
Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin’s work called “Bathing of Red Horse” is traditionally interpreted as a prophetic image of Russia.
Mikhail Vrubel’s “The Demon Seated” is symbolist masterpiece painted in 1890 and is strongly linked to the artist’s own faith.
“Over the Town” painted by Marc Chagall shows a loved-up couple flying through the sky over a townscape. It’s all about love, of course.
Vasily Vereshchagin’s “The Apotheosis of War” is dedicated to “all great conquerors, past, present and to come.” It is full of death and horror – we guarantee you’ll soul will be stirred after seeing this one.

The State Tretyakov Gallery (Russian: Государственная Третьяковская Галерея, Gosudarstvennaya Tretyâkovskaya Galereya; abbreviated ГТГ, GTG) is an art gallery in Moscow, Russia, the foremost depository of Russian fine art in the world.
The gallery is named after its founder, the great Moscow industrialist and patron Pavel Tretyakov. The museum lies on the site of an estate built in the 17th and 18th centuries. Tretiakov bought it in 1852 and moved his collection of art here.
In 1892, Tretyakov presented his already famous collection of approximately 2,000 works (1,362 paintings, 526 drawings, and 9 sculptures) to the Russian nation.
It had taken him more than thirty years to put together, and before he died the museum was already open to the public free of charge.
The collection contains more than 130,000 exhibits, ranging from Theotokos of Vladimir and Andrei Rublev's Trinity to the monumental Composition VII by Wassily Kandinsky and the Black Square by Kazimir Malevich.

Russia: Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery exhibits masterpieces from the Vatican
The Tretyakov Gallery presented some of the Vatican Museum's treasures outside the Holy See for the first time in Moscow, Wednesday, during the exhibition 'Roma Aeterna - Masterpieces from the Pinacoteca Vaticana.'
The exhibition includes masterpieces ranging from the 12th to the 17th century, with works by Giovanni Bellini, Melozzo da Forli, Pietro Perugino, Rafael Santi, Caravaggio, Guido Reni, Guercino and Nicolas Poussin, among others.
The event is a part of an exchange project between the Vatican Pinacotheca and the Tretyakov Gallery, an idea first voiced during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Pope Francis I in 2013 at the Vatican. The second part of the exhibition will take place in the Vatican in 2017, with a large part of the exhibition dedicated to great Russian Gospel-themed paintings from the Tretyakov Gallery.

MOSCOW RUSSIAN ART | Tretyakov Gallery & Amazing Food!
On our last full day in Moscow, Katie and I visited the Tretyakov Gallery, it was on of the Russian Museums you must see when in Moscow. They house some of the most well known artifacts and paintings in all of Russia, featuring Andrei Rublev and the Holy Trinity!
The Holy Trinity is one of the most famous and prestigious pieces of art in Russian history.
After, we visited some of the best Moscow food stops we loved from the earlier days on our trip.
It was a bit of a mixed day running around the city enjoying our last day at a relaxed pace, but we had an amazing time and truly loved our trip to Russia.
We look forward to returning one day!

The State Tretyakov Gallery is an art gallery in Moscow, Russia, the foremost depository of Russian fine art in the world.
The gallery's history starts in 1856 when the Moscow merchant Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov acquired works by Russian artists of his day with the aim of creating a collection, which might later grow into a museum of national art. In 1892, Tretyakov presented his already famous collection of approximately 2,000 works (1,362 paintings, 526 drawings, and 9 sculptures) to the Russian nation.
The façade of the gallery building was designed by the painter Viktor Vasnetsov in a peculiar Russian fairy-tale style. It was built in 1902–04 to the south from the Moscow Kremlin. During the 20th century, the gallery expanded to several neighboring buildings, including the 17th-century church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi.
The collection contains more than 130,000 exhibits, ranging from Theotokos of Vladimir and Andrei Rublev's Trinity to the monumental Composition VII by Wassily Kandinsky and the Black Square by Kazimir Malevich.

В 1985-м Государственная картинная галерея на Крымском Валу была объединена с Третьяковской галереей и образовала единый музейный комплекс Новая Третьяковка вместе с Центральным домом художника. В здании в Лаврушинском переулке была размещена коллекция живописи с древнейших времён до 1910-х годов, а в отделе на Крымском Валу — искусство XX века.

America's First Lady, Hillary Clinton took time out in Moscow on Tuesday to visit one of Russia's most famous art galleries.
The Tretyakov gallery has one of the most prestigious collections in the world, containing works from Medieval times to contemporary art.
Hillary certainly looked interested as she was given a guided tour by one of the curators, while husband Bill attended to more pressing matters such as the woeful state of the Russian economy.

The U-S First Lady Hillary Clinton's is in Moscow - making her first public appearance since her husband admitted an inappropriate relationship with a former White House intern.
Mrs. Clinton appeared jet-lagged but otherwise happy to meet Naina Yeltsin, wife of Russian leader Boris Yeltsin.
The two toured a private women's clothing factory and took part in a discussion with small business owners, before touring one of Moscow's premier museums.
The First Lady has been the focus of international attention since her husband admitted having an inappropriate relationship with former White House intern, Monica Lewinsky.
But it was business as usual as Hillary Clinton visited one of Russia's most famous art museums on Tuesday.
The Tretyakov gallery has one of the most prestigious collections in the world, containing works from Medieval times to contemporary art.
Mrs Clinton was given a guided tour by one of the curators.
She also met up with Naina Yeltsin, wife of Russian leader Boris Yeltsin.
The two toured a private women's clothing factory and took part in a discussion with businesswomen.
The visit was designed to highlight the work of female small business owners, who in addition to the regular trials facing entrepreneurs, also must battle the sexism pervasive in Russian society.
