Armchair Walks: A stroll Through Steyning in West Sussex
Take a lazy stroll through the Sussex town of Steyning. A point of View walk or Slow TV as it is called. To be clear - there is no commentary, narration or voice over. The concept of these walks is to provide the viewer a gentle carefree stroll through an English Town, British Countryside or UK landscape from the comfort of their armchair.
Many people are unable to get out in the country, other suffer from dementia or anxiety issues. These walks hope to de-stress and relax.

Walks in England: Sunrise over Steyning Bowl
It is early morning and I am taking a short stroll with the camera to capture the sunrise over Steyning Bowl. The 'bowl' is a U shaped natural formation in the Southdowns escapement close to the village that bears its name.

Walks in Sussex: Exploring Victorian Amusements of Devil's Dyke
The very popular beauty spot high up on the Sussex South Downs called Devil's Dyke, near Brighton in East Sussex, has a fascinating history. There is a pub there now, but one hundred and forty years ago, Victorian amusements crowned the summit with cable cars and steep grade railways to excite the visitor.
Martin Snow and I explore this one time busy theme park.

Cuckoo Trail by Bike (1 of 3) - Heathfield to Horam (double speed)
The former Cuckoo Line from Heathfield to Horam. After a brief look at the former railway tunnel, unfortunately now locked, we make our way to the Cuckoo Line, descending steadily to Horam Station, beyond which a housing estate briefly interrupts the route. This is the opening section of the eleven-mile route southward from Heathfield to Polegate.

Walks in Sussex: Exploring Kings Mill, Shipley, West Sussex
Support the Bald Explorer:
Famed for the fictional home of Jonathan Creek in the TV series of the same name, King's Mill in Shipley, West Sussex, is a beautiful smock windmill that was built in 1879. It cost three times more than was originally estimated. It ran as a working mill until after the First World War and for a time it belonged to Hilaire Belloc, writer, poet and historian. It was later restored and opened to the public by a trust. Sadly the lease ran out and the largest and youngest windmill in Sussex closed to the public in 2009. It was sold to private hands.

Walks in England: Exploring the Carfax
Today I am in Horsham in West Sussex, exploring the Carfax, a old term for where four roads meet. I used to live in Horsham and worked in the Carfax when I left school. The Causeway is a beautiful street to the south of the Carfax and it leads past St Mary's Church to the River Arun. From there, a short walk takes to a rare spot, a place where a river, a road and a railway converge.

Walks in Sussex: Exploring Midhurst in West Sussex
Midhurst is a delightful old market town laying on the crossroads of two ancient routes in West Sussex, the A272 and the A286. A town that developed as a result of the fortified manor house that first was built on St Anne's Hill and later moved down on the plain on the other side of the river. Join me as I explore the old market area.

Walks in England: The Wall Paintings of Hardham Church
I am join by Martin Snow today to explore the important early paintings in Hardham Church. Dated around 1100AD, these recently uncovered paintings demonstrate just how vivid the early Norman churches would have been on the side.
Also, Hardham Church is a wonderful example of how Saxon and Norman rural churches looked like in their day. Covered in a lime wash to protect the walls, they look beautiful in the landscape.

Walks in Shropshire: Shrewsbury Town Walk
Today I am exploring the market town of Shrewsbury from a newcomer's perspective and imagining that I have travelled in by rail. What might I find.
Shrewsbury is a market town whose centre has a largely unspoilt medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, were founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. The town is the birthplace of Charles Darwin. Horticulture remains popular, and the Shrewsbury Flower Show is one of the largest horticultural events in England.

Walks in England: Sullington in West Sussex
Sullington is a village in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England, part of the civil parish of Storrington and Sullington. The village lies on the A283 road west of the A24 road, 20 miles (32 km) south of Horsham.
Martin and I walk around the manor at Sullington and focus on the tithe barn there and I asked Martin about the traditional use of tithe barns.

Walks in Sussex: Exploring Fulking and the Spring Water
Today I am in Fulking, a beautiful, though tiny village at the foot of the South Downs near Devil's Dyke in West Sussex. I explore the lovely houses and natural spring water that filters through the chalk and flint that John Ruskin, painter and art critic, helped villagers build a fountain.

Walks in England: The Masts of Truleigh Hill
My walk today takes me up the top of Truleigh Hill, between Worthing and Brighton in Sussex, five miles north of the coast. There on the summit, during the Second World War, stood a radar station. It, along with others on the Home Chain Low group, detected German bombers and their escorts long before they arrived above our shores during the Battle of Britain.

Walks in Sussex: Exploring Burpham
I am taking a flit around the beautiful rural village of Burpham. King Alfred created burghs around Wessex and beyond to protect his people from the Vikings. These burgh were defensive towns/communities, usually walled or on high natural ground, a bolt hole for the Anglo Saxons farmers and villagers to make for when the Norsemen invaded.

Walks in England: Shoreham Fort and Harbour
My England Walks take me to Shoreham Fort at the harbour mouth at Shoreham by Sea in West Sussex. In the 1850s, the English were worried about invasion from France and decided to fortify the coastline. They build a redoubt fortress at Littlehampton and Shoreham complete with a Carnot Wall.
I take a brief walk around the fort and then on to the west harbour wall.
