It combines Hotel, Restaurant and the Stocks Bar Pub. The Stocks Bar Pub was the venue for many Live Groups. The great thing about the Stocks Bar is that there are so many different areas to choose from.
The Crown and Thistle is one of the oldest licensed premises in Abingdon and was a Coaching Inn on the major route from London to Gloucester. One landlord, James Powell brought the news of Abingdon's first national lottery winner in 1767. Oakman Inns intend to keep the name of the Crown and Thistle.

The Photographic Guide to the Pubs of East London (Exhibition) Teaser no. II
THE PHOTOGRAPHIC GUIDE TO THE PUBS OF EAST LONDON: A NEW EXHIBITION BY JAN KLOS
LAUNCH NIGHT: WEDNESDAY 7th OCTOBER 6.30PM-10PM
Featuring all your faves: THE KENTON | GEORGE & DRAGON | ROYAL OAK | THE GLORY | PUB ON THE PARK | OLD BLUE LAST | NELSON'S HEAD AND MORE!
East London is home to some of the oldest and best pubs in the world. Some are historic, steeped in tradition, while others put on popular gay nights or serve locally made beers. And at the heart of what makes them worth visiting is their staff – the bar men and women who pull pints, keep locals entertained and often come to be like the closest of families.
Inspired by the 18th century conversation piece and the traditional family portrait, photographer Jan Klos presents The Photographic Guide to the Pubs of East London, a new series of striking group portraits that introduce viewers to the colourful and dedicated teams behind some of East London’s much-loved watering holes.
From The Pub on the Park and The George Tavern, to The Kenton and The Royal Oak, the exhibition is a lively tour of the places and faces that make East London’s pubs the finest to visit for a friendly pint, a mid-week dance or even a jellied eel!
Since 2008 one in five pubs in the UK have closed and East London has seen its share of public houses shut their doors for good. Some of them, including The Nelson’s Head feature in this exhibition. The Photographic Guide to the Pubs of East London serves to raise a glass to East London’s public houses and the ‘families’ in them, but it is also a timely record of what the area has lost in recent years.
WEDNESDAY 7TH OCTOBER: OPENING RECEPTION: 6.30PM - 10PM
PRICE: FREE ENTRY
NORMAL OPENING HOURS: 8-14 OCTOBER 12-6PM
Opening night will feature SPECIAL VIDEO INTERVIEWS with East London’s landlords and loyal customers.

Adlbury Morris men at the May Fayre
About Aldbury Morris Men
The clue is in the name! Aldbury Morris is a traditional men-only side, members of the Morris Ring. Having said that, we're not at all stuffy and we will dance with anyone, or indeed anything. We have a mix of young(ish), middle-aged, old and downright ancient dancers - and enough men to dance out every Thursday evening during the Summer, as well as dancing at many fetes, weddings, bar mitzvahs and funerals. We also have a well-supported annual weekend away (check the memory lane page to see where we've been.)
We dance an eclectic mix of different Cotswold traditions (and the odd Border dance as well) with sticks and hankies and pints. Many of the side are also musicians and singers, so every Thursday evening in the season ends with a really good music session in the bar - the ratio of dancing to singing depending on the weather! In fact, many people have observed, perhaps unkindly, that we are better musicians than we are dancers!
We keep the tradition very much alive and we do have a lot of fun.
History of Aldbury Morris
Inspired by the 1960s folk renaissance, we started dancing in 1969, meeting in an unheated barn at the rear of the Greyhound Pub in Aldbury, Hertfordshire. After the floorboards threatened to give way and frostbite became severe we moved to warmer surroundings. We now practice every Thursday evening during the winter months in the Aldbury Memorial Hall.
There are only two of the original members who still dance regularly: John and Rod the original Squire, who now prefers to exercise his vocal chords rather than his feet! In 1999 we finally got around to becoming members of the Morris Ring, the association for traditional men's sides, and now we generally aim to attend a Ring meeting once a year. These meetings are weekends of dance at which sides gather from around the country to learn, entertain and socialise.
We have represented Hertfordshire at the National gathering of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, and our talents have been seen from the Yorkshire Dales to deepest Dorset. We have entertained the locals of Germany, Holland and France. Quite possibly you may have seen us in the odd television programme or film, such Jim Davidson's Generation Game or The Man Who Knew Too Little with Bill Murray.
Aldbury village retains its traditional stocks and whipping post, though these have now fallen into disuse. Indeed, they are quite a rare village survival, and so feature as the distinctive emblem of the AMM.

SUMMARY
=======
The Representation of the People Act 1832 (known informally as the 1832 Reform Act, Great Reform Act or First Reform Act to distinguish it from subsequent Reform Acts) was an Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom (indexed as 2 & 3 Will. IV c. 45) that introduced wide-ranging changes to the electoral system of England and Wales. According to its preamble, the Act was designed to take effectual Measures for correcting divers Abuses that have long prevailed in the Choice of Members to serve in the Commons House of Parliament. Before the reform, most members nominally represented boroughs. The number of electors in a borough varied widely, from a dozen or so up to 12,000. Frequently the selection of MPs was effectively controlled by one powerful patron: for example Charles Howard, 11th Duke of Norfolk, controlled eleven boroughs. Criteria for qualification for the franchise varied greatly among boroughs, from the requirement to own land, to merely living in a house with a hearth sufficient to boil a pot.
There had been calls for reform long before 1832, but without success. The Act that finally succeeded was proposed by the Whigs, led by Prime Minister Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey. It met with significant opposition from the Pittite factions in Parliament, who had long governed the country; opposition was especially pronounced in the House of Lords. Nevertheless, the bill was eventually passed, mainly as a result of public pressure. The Act granted seats in the House of Commons to large cities that had sprung up during the Industrial Revolution, and removed seats from the rotten boroughs: those with very small electorates and usually dominated by a wealthy patron. The Act also increased the electorate from about 400,000 to 650,000, making about one in five adult males eligible to vote. The full title is An Act to amend the representation of the people in England and Wales. Its formal short title and citation is Representation of the People Act 1832 (2 & 3 Wm. IV, c. 45). The Act applied only in England and Wales; the Irish Reform Act 1832 brought similar changes to Ireland. The separate Scottish Reform Act 1832 was revolutionary, enlarging the electorate by a factor of 1300% from 5000 to 65,000.

EVERYWHERE USA 1960s TRAVELOGUE FILM CAPE COD / CAMPTOWN RACES / ABINGDON BARTER THEATER 68274
This late 1960s color travelogue film provides highlights of footage cut from other films in this series. It is narrated by Jack Douglas as part of the America! Television series. A clam bake in Cape Cod is sponsored by the Bass River Rod & Gun Club. Being prepared in baskets are clams, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, hot dogs, and sausages. Stones are heated in a fire and covered with wet seaweed. The metal food baskets are placed on top and covered with a sheet. The lobsters are placed on that and covered with a wet canvas to keep the steam in. The sheet is pulled back to reveal cooked lobsters (1:29-3:27). The Christopher Ryder House is shown in Chatham. A hobo banjo band performs for diners (3:28-4:42). The Camptown Races in Ashland, Virginia have horse racing, clowns passing out balloons, and people relaxing on the lawn. An open picnic basket lid displays plates and real cutlery. On display is an operating steam engine. People lounge under large umbrellas or wear colorful headgear to block the sun. A bag of silver dollars is suspended above the finish line of the mule race (4:43-6:39). Old Fort Monroe imprisoned Jefferson Davis following President Lincoln’s assassination (6:40-7:33). The Abingdon Barter Theatre yearly rewards a Virginia ham, platter, and an acre of mountain land. Winners include Gregory Peck and Ernest Borgnine (7:34-9:14). The Leska Bros. Circus display is part of the Harry Hertsberg Circus Museum in San Antonio. A mechanical clown greets visitors. Displays include circus wagons, handbills, and Tom Thumb’s carriage (9:15-10:19). An Eastern diamondback rattlesnake shakes its rattle at Ross Allen’s Reptile Institute. A rattler is agitated and strikes and breaks a balloon (10:20-11:15). The Petrified Forest National Park has large petrified trees and a display of polished petrified tree cutaways. A couple walks on the Agate Bridge. Petroglyphs are on Newspaper Rock (11:16-13:57). Conquistadors built the San Xavier Mission. A cat and a mouse are carved into the stone façade (14:01-15:12). Shown are photos of Frank Lloyd Wright, inside and outside views of Taliesin West, Mrs. Wright, and architecture students in action (15:13-17:37). The Chapel of the Holy Cross is at Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona, Arizona (17:38-18:12). The Great Masterpiece in Lake Wales was an enormous mosaic of Da Vinci’s “Last Supper” painting (smuggled out of Europe to avoid Nazis but no longer in existence) (18:13-19:07). “The Lord’s Supper” can still be found in life-size wax figures at the Christian Art Museum in Fort Worth (19:08-20:02). The American Wax Museum life-size re-enactments include Indians and William Penn, the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, Washington crossing the Delaware, and Betsy Ross sewing an American flag. Also shown are John James Audubon, Edgar Allen Poe, and Walt Whitman (20:03-21:13). Sculptures shown at the Rodin Museum are the Monument to Balzac statue, Meditation, The hand from the Tomb, The Cathedral, and The Kiss (21:14-22:24). Photos, carbines, ammunition belts, and Indian weapons are displayed at the Custer Battlefield Visitor’s Center (22:25-23:32).

Moon Night 2012 (Cape Town, South Africa)
International Observe the Moon Night 2012 was celebrated world-wide on September 22. In Cape Town, at Zevenwacht Mall, Kuilsriver, four of us set up telescopes for an evening's astronomy outreach, giving several hundred people their first-ever look through a telescope, and a close-up view of our nearest celestial neighbour.
