Our Rhodope mountain trip continues through one of the most prominent places in the area – the mystical Thracian city of Perperikon. Situated on the top of a steep hill, the ancient city has preserved its rough structure and visitors can sink into the atmosphere of once vibrant city, visiting different houses, squares, and a preserved defensive tower, observing what life looked like at that period of time. The oldest evidences of the city’s existence date back to 8000 years ago – the stone age. It has been inhabited by Thracians, Romans, Goths, Byzantines and has been destroyed and brought to its current stage by Ottomans’ invasion in XIV century. Naturally the Perperikon sanctuary is visited by a stable flow of tourist and this can be seen in the video. While we were circling around, two big tourist groups traversed the city bellow. After a nice long flight, being chased by the incoming rains we moved north to a small but interesting rocky sight – the Stone mushrooms near village Beli Plast. The second part of the video features these weird looking rocky formations, among which a couple perfectly formed mushroom of about 3 meters high. They are rhyolite volcanic rock formation on a plate of colorful pinkish and greenish ground. The green is due to the presence of manganese and the pink colored rocks are minerals of the zeolite group. The zeolite deposits in the Beli Plast make the village famous in the area due to the favorable features of the zeolite rocks, which are basically perfect natural water filters.

I know, it is a very short video of part of Kardzhali, we had been rained on the whole weekend and our time was scarce, so this was the only part i was able to capture. Of course there will be next time, when a longer video will reveal more of this interesting city in the heart of the amazing Rhodope mountains. Kardzhali is situated on this beautiful location between two large dam lakes on the river Arda, and the panoramic shots reveal both lakes. Between two rains we raised the drone to take a good look of the wall of the dam. It is always breathtaking to see a massive wall holding an immense amount of water staying so high in mountain. From the wall, down the river we moved closer to the city to a church called St. John (Sveti Yoan Predtecha), right next to the river, which in this part is formed into a channel, called the Water Mirror (Vodno Ogledalo), and its purpose is ability to handle emergency release of water streams from the dams in case of overflowing. Do check the photo album, there are extensive panoramas of the whole area, and also there are a few other videos from our rainy weekend in the area, please check the other videos in the channel for the Perperikon and Glavatartsi flights (it will take me some time to upload, so at this time they might not be available yet).

We are standing on the shore of the Kardzhali dam lake, enjoying the beautiful calm waters while taking a break from the rain that has been accompanying our weekend trip. We spend a lovely Saturday in this magical place in a hotel on the shore of the lake. The place is called Glavatartsi village, but you can see with plain eye that this is not your average village. There are no village like houses with barns and livestock, there are only upscale houses, swimming pools and hotels, so it goes under the resort category in my book. Down the lake to the east we bump into the immense wall of the dam and over the wall the city of Kardzhali can be seen. All around us is the Rhodope mountain, which traditionally makes us witnesses of the most beautiful sights, always a fruitful place for any drone enthusiast.
