The hidden oil patterns on bowling lanes
Every bowling lane has a hidden oil pattern. In this episode of Vox Almanac, Phil Edwards finds out what that means.

Every lane has a pattern. In this episode of Vox Almanac, Phil Edwards explores how they change the game.
Bowling isn’t just about a great ball and good form — if you want to understand the sport, you have to understand the lane.
Every bowling lane, including the one in your neighborhood alley, is coated with an oil pattern to protect the wood. But these patterns aren’t just for protection — the way in which oil is applied to the lane can affect the speed and direction of your ball.
These patterns are so important that recreational bowlers and professional bowlers bowl on vastly different patterns — the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) even classifies the patterns it uses in tournaments.
Phil Edwards met with professional bowler Parker Bohn III at his childhood bowling alley, Howell Lanes in Howell, New Jersey. He guided Phli through the complex strategy a pro bowler uses when encountering different oil patterns. Not only do they have to assess which pattern is in use, but they also have to judge how that pattern changes as the oil shifts and slides over the day. Knowing how to play a specific lane can be the difference between a title and second place.
But these patterns aren’t just for the pros — they’re relevant to recreational bowlers as well. Watch the video to see how you can use these patterns to step up your game.

The Condition of My Condition - Vlog 025 - TheAndySan
Check out my birthday/Christmas Amazon Wishlist:
*Editor's Note: This vlog was recorded the day before so my mom's birthday was on the 7th and not the 8th.*
Before I begin, I'd like to wish my mom a happy birthday!!
For this vlog, I decided to go on a short bike ride yesterday since the weather was nice and I had been going through bouts of cabin fever.
The eBay auction for our TV didn't sell, although it did do better than before. We're just gonna put up flyers for it and things like that.
My job situation is looking grim, thanks to not only the already crappy economy, but to the upcoming winter season. There are some temp positions available that I'll be looking into this week.
In Vlog 23, I said that I'd be moving to Michigan in January with my cousin and her boyfriend. However, due to the stupid-high unemployment rate in Michigan among other concerns, I doubt that I'll be going. I'm still gonna keep this option open just in case something were to happen with me and my stepdad.
So far we're on good terms, but who knows when he'll get pissed at me and throw me out again over something asinine. I'd like to have a backup plan for when that happens.
The unemployment office hasn't contacted me yet on when the over-the-phone hearing will be, but I did receive a letter from them several weeks ago saying that it will happen and that they'll send me another letter saying when it'll happen.
With that kind of money, I'll be able to move elsewhere to look for work. One such locale that I'm thinking about is California, specifically Orange County since their unemployment rate (around 9.2%) is one of the lowest in the state. I want to move out there because I'm tired of Ohio's frigid climate. I want to be somewhere where the weather's consistently warm with a body of water nearby. Are any of you living in or have lived in California? Tell me about your experiences in the comments below!
Despite getting kicked out of my apartment in Bowling Green, I'm still glad that I had that experience. It taught me a lot about myself, in that it helped me figure out a proper food budget that I couldn't do having never lived on my own before.
It also showed me what kind of foods that I enjoy. Even though I ate mostly fast food and other stuff that was bad for me, I also ate healthy stuff like apples and drank cranberry juice in the form of Cranergy, which made my weight remain fairly consistent. I was still overweight, but at least I didn't gain much weight before losing it. Since I moved back home, I've gained a lot of weight (I think I'm up to 220 lbs now) mostly due to physical inactivity instead of poor eating habits (although they do play a part in it too). I'm looking forward to moving out so that way I can start eating healthier and lose all this extra crap!
This week, my weekly Japanese video and album review might not be uploaded because my stepdad will be home around that time and he doesn't like when I'm on the internet. I'll still record them sometime this week, but in this case, I'll be uploading two videos on Monday and Wednesday of the following week to make up for no videos this coming week.
It's kind of a good thing because I'm not really sure what I'll be doing with my upcoming 2 Japanese videos and I still need to write out the CD review that I have in mind. The online downtime will also give my poor addled brain a much-needed break.
Well, I'm going to be going to bed soon so I'll see you sometime next week or hopefully sooner. Later!

Hail Storm Freaks of Nature & largest hail stone ever recorded recreation
Extensive footage of giant hail stones and hail storm facts plus the largest hail stone ever officially recorded recreated. Damaging softball sized hail, sideways flying bullet hail and complete summer white outs are a few highlights in this stock hail footage video. For licensing contact hankschyma@yahoo.com
HAIL FACTS & Interesting information...
1. Hail injures about 24 people per year in the USA
2. The last hail related death occurred in Texas in 2000 after a man got struck in the head and later died of head trauma.
3. On average, hail causes almost a billion dollars of damage to crops each year in the USA
4. Hail storms killed 246 people in India on April 30, 1888
5. The largest hail stone officially measured landed in Vivian South Dakota, July 23rd, 2010... It was eight inches in diameter and weighed almost two pounds.
Hail stones crash through windows, they shred trees and crops, pummel live stock, damage roofs, wreak havoc on cars, and everything underneath its wrath. Hail can turn a scorching Summer ground into a winter wonderland in minutes. Sometimes softballs just fall from the sky. Other times strong winds hurl hail stones sideways like bullets. If you're caught away from shelter during a severe hail storm, you've got a problem. If you're a storm chaser, Hail is your nemesis.
FORMATION
A Hail stone forms as a tiny super cooled water droplet journeys up above the freezing level in some of the most beautiful and dramatic thunderstorms.
In an environment conducive of a severe hail storm, this rising air, or updraft is often exploding into lowered freezing levels. This is the factory where hail is made. When the super cooled droplet freezes, the process releases heat which keeps the stones exterior in a sticky liquid phase. As the little stone journeys up and down and through the cloud it captures more snow and water on the surface... Molecules near the inner layer freezes, and the hail stones grows another layer.
Hailstones can also grow by colliding and conglomerating with others... One of the reasons they come in such myriad of odd shapes.
Upward winds sustain ice pebbles and the longer they hang around up there, the larger they tend to get. Updraft winds rising at say 40 mph, are easily strong enough to sustain hail the size of dimes or quarters... But some intense updrafts blow up over 100 mph. This is where things really start to get freaky.
Eventually, the weight of the hail stone overcomes the updraft winds and it falls to Earth, often appearing as bright white curtains. Isolated thunderstorms with hail downdrafts set the stage for the most vibrant rainbows. If the storm matures into a high precipitation monster, the thick hail core often has a breath-taking turquoise glow. And because these storms often occur in the late afternoon through evening when angled yellow sunlight blasts into the hail core, the yellow and blue make green... And that's why people associate green storm clouds with tornadoes. Strong inflow winds that inhale dust can also add a yellowish filter over the blue core.
STORM CHASERS and HAIL:
The thought of getting trapped under an intense tornadic hail storm can be frightening, but not nearly as terrifying as the thought of having to sit out a day or two replacing glass while your buddies are out bagging photogenic tornadoes.
Often the same powerful updrafts that create giant hail, drop tornadoes. These storms are called supercells. These storms do everything they can to detour storm chasers... They cover the road in ice so you cant drive fast... then they cover the roads in wet slippery leaves so you cant drive fast. If that doesn't work, they drop buckets of hail to reduce the air temperature to the dew point causing hail fog... And of course if that doesn't slow you down, they break your windows.
Most chasers just avoid the hail cores often revealed on radar with a pink or purple spot. Other chasers would rather sacrifice portions of their view with metal hail guards and shields to block the icy shrapnel. Others have the luxury of thick super heavy duty glass to shoot through.

Richard Gill Discusses the House Committee on the Judiciary Impeachent Inquiry, Part 3
Citation
Richard Gill recorded interview by Timothy Naftali, September 30, 2011, the Richard Nixon Oral History Project of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum.
About the Richard Nixon Oral History Project
The Richard Nixon Oral History Project was created in November 2006 at the initiative of Timothy Naftali, weeks after he had begun his tenure as director of what was then the Nixon Presidential Materials Staff at the National Archives and Records Administration. (The Nixon Presidential Materials Staff became the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum on July 11, 2007, with the incorporation of certain facilities in Yorba Linda, California, that formerly had been operated by the private Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace.) The project was intended to preserve the memories and reflections of former Nixon officials and others who had been prominent in the Nixon era by conducting videotaped interviews. Starting in February 2007, Paul Musgrave, Special Assistant to the Director, coordinated the project, which was housed in the Office of the Director.
Naftali insisted from the project's inception that it be a serious, impartial and nonpartisan source of information about President Nixon, his administration, and his times. A second goal of the project was to provide public domain video that would be available as free historical content for museums and for posting on the Internet. Donors to the project neither requested nor received a veto over interview questions or interviewee selection. (Funding for interviews, materials, and support staff came in part from the Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace Foundation, which ceased to support the project in 2007; in part from donations from Nixon administration alumni; and in part from the appropriated and self-generated funds of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library itself.) Accordingly, the project includes interviews with former staff members of the Nixon administration as well as journalists, politicians, and activists who may have been opposed to the Nixon administration and its policies. Taken as a whole, the collection contributes to a broader and more vivid portrait of President Nixon, the Nixon administration, and American society during the Nixon era.
