____________
Admiral Yi Sun-sin of Korea began his legendary career with a series of disasters. Fate (and corrupt officials) conspired against him to have him repeatedly knocked down from the success he had earned, often because his insistence on strict military codes and refusal to ignore corruption made enemies of his fellow officers. Even when his superior had him tortured and blamed after a loss to the Jurchen raiders from the north, Yi perservered. Stripped of his rank and now reduced to a common enlisted man, Yi nevertheless served Korea with distinction. Meanwhile his childhood friend, Ryu Seong-ryong, had risen to become the prime minister of Korea. Ryu recognized the threat of war from Japan looming on the horizon, so when Yi asked to retire in 1588, Ryu convinced him to stay.

The Man Behind The Myth: Yi Sun-shin
Welcome Aboard! During 2017, I will be documenting a journey to discover the man behind the myth of Admiral Yi Sun-shin. The greatness of Yi Sun-shin is not in dispute, and everyone agrees that he is among the very finest naval commanders who ever lived. But much of what we know about The Admiral is embellished storytelling, and from that a myth emerges.
Through my studies of Korean history and Yi Sun-shin, I have found that the story of the actual man is far more compelling than the myth.
I'm inviting people to be partners in this endeavour, to allow a foreigner to tell a very important story in Korea's history for consumption by Westerners who have little knowledge of Korea or Yi Sun-shin.
I hope that you too will join this search as we go Looking For The Admiral.

Yi Sun-sin
Yi Sun-shin (April 28, 1545 -- December 16, 1598, Korean: 이순신, Hanja: 李舜臣) was a Korean naval commander, famed for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Imjin war in the Joseon Dynasty, and is well-respected for his exemplary conduct on and off the battlefield not only by Koreans, but by Japanese Admirals as well. Military historians have compared his naval genius to that of Admiral Horatio Nelson. His title of Samdo Sugun Tongjesa (Hangul : 삼도수군통제사, Hanja :三道水軍統制使), literally meaning Naval Commander of the Three Provinces, was the title for the commander of the Korean navy until 1896.
Perhaps his most remarkable military achievement occurred at the Battle of Myeongnyang. Outnumbered 333 ships to 13, and forced into a last stand with only his minimal fleet standing between the Japanese Army and Seoul, Yi delivered one of the most astonishing defeats in military history.
Despite never having received naval training or participating in naval combat prior to the war, and constantly being outnumbered and outsupplied, he went to his grave as one of few admirals in world history who remained undefeated after commanding as many naval battles as he did (at least 23).
Yi died at the Battle of Noryang on December 16, 1598. With the Japanese army on the verge of being completely expelled from the Korean Peninsula, he was mortally wounded by a single bullet. His famous dying words were, The battle is at its height...beat my war drums...do not announce my death.
The royal court eventually bestowed various honors upon him, including a posthumous title of Chungmugong (충무공, 忠武公, Duke of Loyalty and Warfare), an enrollment as a Seonmu Ildeung Gongsin (선무일등공신, 宣武一等功臣, First-class military order of merit during the reign of Seonjo), and two posthumous offices, Yeonguijeong (영의정, 領議政, Prime Minister), and the Deokpung Buwongun (덕풍부원군, 德豊府院君, The Prince of the Court from Deokpung). Yi remains a venerated hero among Koreans today.

Gwanghwamun, King Sejong and Lee Sunshin Statues - Travel in Seoul, Korea by Mercene Travel
Gwanghwamun is the beautiful gate that is the main gate to Gyeongbokgung Palace. It is the largest and most beautiful gate and leading up to the gate, there are a few more statues commemorating the achievements of famous Koreans.
The first statue is of King Sejong along with a few statues of inventions that happened under his reign. They call him King Sejong the great because of all the advancements in so many areas that happened under his reign.
In front of Sejong there is a statue of admiral Lee Sunshin who was responsible for winning several battles that eventually lead to removing the Japanese after they invaded Korea in the late 1500s. This man won several battles, went to jail for treason under a plot the Japanese devised to bring him down and eventually ended up giving his life trying to end the invasion.
