The death this week of a New Zealand soldier in East Timor will not lead Wellington to lessen its commitment to the United Nations peacekeeping mission there, New Zealand Foreign Minister Phil Goff said on Wednesday.
Goff is in Bangkok to attend the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) Regional Forum, an annual meeting of 23 nations concerned with Asia-Pacific Security issues.
The Australian Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer also added his country's concerns over security in East Timor.
The New Zealand delegation has held a series of meetings with individual countries on the sidelines of the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) summit, and East Timor has been high up its agenda.
On Wednesday, New Zealand's foreign minister, Phil Goff, met the Thai Foreign Minister, Surin Pitsuwan.
Since the death of one of its peacekeeping contingent in East Timor, New Zealand has been keen to increase security at the border between East and West Timor.
Private Leonard Manning from New Zealand's peacekeeping contingent of 660 military personnel was killed while on patrol on Monday near the border with Indonesian West Timor.
His body was to arrive in New Zealand on Wednesday and will be taken to Waikato for his family to make funeral arrangements.
U-N officials blamed the death on armed militias operating from West Timor.
Goff told journalists that New Zealand would not shrink from its duty.

And the death - the third death - of a New Zealander in East Timor, the first killed in combat, has obviously had a traumatising effect in New Zealand. That does not reduce our commitment to our involvement as part of this peacekeeping force. But it does renew our determination to deal with the issues that remain outstanding with regard to the ongoing incursions of militia into East Timor.

But he said he would have key questions for the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Alwi Shihab, about why incursions over the border are still being allowed to happen.

When we last met, I was given an indication by himself and his colleagues that action would be taken. The reports that we have from the High Commission for Refugees is that there has been very limited progress -- that the number of people returning to East Timor has reduced to a trickle -- and will want to discuss the reason for that failure with Foreign Minister Shihab.

The Australian Government will step up pressure on Indonesia to rein in the militia which killed a New Zealand soldier on Monday.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We are deeply concerned about the death of the New Zealand soldier and there is still more to do to ensure the militias are brought under control in West Timor so that peace and stability can be truly guaranteed for East Timor. The recent incident in East Timor clearly demonstrates that there are high risks for the peace keeping operations there. It is dangerous and difficult work.

Downer also spoke about connections between the Indonesian military and the militia in East Timor.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
You're really asking two questions. Are there any links at all between people in TNI (Indonesian Army) and militias? There certainly were close links so there probably are some linkages still. The second thing is do I think there are people in the TNI or some elements in the TNI who want to destabilise President Wahid? I think that might be true.

Australia: Tens of thousands flood Melbourne for global climate strike
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
An estimate of more than 100,000 climate protesters flooded the Australian coastal city of Melbourne on Friday as part of the global climate strike movement ahead of the United Nations Climate Change summit.
The march is one of many taking place in Australia and across the globe with organisers estimating millions of people to turn out in over 150 countries including Germany, the UK, France and the US.
The global movement is partially inspired by youth climate activist Greta Thunberg who began her weekly school strike for climate last year outside the Swedish parliament and has become a global figure inspiring climate activism.

Farewell Gippsland Line Electrification Morwell 1995
When electrification of the Gippsland Line to Traralgon was completed in the 1950s, the Melbourne to Traralgon line was the longest electrified line in Australia. In the mid 1990s, the electric wires were cut down between Pakenham and Traralgon. This video clip shows the cutting own of the last wires of the Warragul Traralgon section at Morwell in June 1995 and shows the method used by the contractors. (Victoria Australia)
