SWEDISH GRACE
The Origin of Modern Swedish Design: a period of neoclassical design and crafts spanning the 1920s
November 14, 2014 - February 14, 2015
Swedish Grace had been a brief yet substantial moment that emerged in the 1920s, and came to represent a brilliant mix of classicism and architectural details. Although highly important for the evolution of 20th-century Swedish design, this movement is barely known outside of Scandinavia and is being revisited on this unique occasion at Jacksons Berlin.
Amongst the many rare pieces Jacksons is exhibiting is an exciting glass mosaic table that was originally a sample for the Golden Hall at the the Stockholm City Hall. Designed by Swedish artist Einar Forseth, the table depicts Apollo in the Chariot and was produced by Puhl & Wagner in Berlin.
Another stellar piece we have on view is a hand-carved lion and engraved copper top table by legendary artist Anna Petrus, which was originally exhibited at the Paris World Exhibition in 1925—the big international breakthrough for contemporary Swedish design. Due to the tremendous international success in Paris 1925, Sweden was the first European country to exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in New York at the exhibition “Contemporary Swedish Decorative Arts” in 1927.

Introduction
Stockholm is Sweden's center of trade and commerce, having it accorded with the capital city status by it's government. Looking at a map, it is situated on a group of different isles in Lake Malar towards the Baltic.

It is Stockholm's center of civil democracy.

Text description provided by the architects. The site is a promontory on the relatively small island of Krokholmen in Stockholm's outer archipelago: a typical archipelago landscape with windswept dwarf pines and soft mountain outcrops produced by the inland ice. The plot benefits from open views, in the east all the way out to the lighthouse Almagrundet in the open sea, and it is at times exposed to strong winds. The family wanted a maintenance-free vacation home in one level with social space both inside and outside.
We proposed a two-part plan. Through a central wall holding the fireplace, a narrow opening gives access to bedrooms, bath and storage, that are oriented to the forest in the west. The large family room with kitchen and entrance could thus face out towards the sea with daylight and view in three

Glass and dark-wood house offers panoramic views of Swedish countryside
Glass and dark-wood house offers panoramic views of Swedish countryside
A broad roof overhangs the glass walls of this small woodland house that Krupinski/Krupinska Arkitekter has built on the Stockholm archipelago.
Summer House T replaces an existing summer house located in the grounds of a property owned by a couple with two daughters.
Stockhom-based Krupinski/Krupinska Arkitekter designed the residence for one of the daughters, and her family.
Her sister's and her respective family already occupies an existing guest house on the site.
Aiming to create a 180-degree view of the natural setting, the architects gave the house a glass facade and placed the more private areas in a wooden box at the centre of the plan.
Its dark finish matches the floors and roof, and helps to direct the eye to views of the trees and lake through the facade.
The open organisation with ceiling-high windows create a surprisingly large number of different spatial experiences, said the architects.
Freedom of movement along the entire facade gives a feeling that the house is larger and more spacious than it in reality is.
The lounge and dining room are placed on the south-facing side of the house, where large sliding doors open onto a patio with lake views.
The master bedroom, children's bunks and kitchen are built into a wooden box in the centre of the space. Large cut-outs in the box give the two bedrooms, which are separated by the kitchen, views into the trees and of the lake.
The parents' sleeping area has a view towards the countryside and the lake while the children's more enclosed sleeping alcove directs the view towards the grandmother's house, explained the studio.
The kitchen is lined with light-toned wood and features metallic counters.

The possibilities of wood | Wood City Sweden
See and listen to Swedish architect’s take on wood, a film produced in conjunction with Wood City Sweden’s participation at the architectural biennale in Venice, Italy.
Wood is the natural choice in modern construction. The benefits and possibilities in timber construction are huge, from both a sustainability point of view and a social point of view. We can build schools, homes, exhibition halls and bridges. There’s basically no end to the possibilities. Our future cities will be built in wood; sustainable, versatile and beautiful.
