Rhetorical
The Market Theatre, Goethe Institute, Kaaitheater Brussels and Siemens Stiftung presents:
'Rhetorical'
by Paul Mpumelelo Grootboom and Aubrey Sekhabi
An initiative of the Siemens Stiftung in cooperation with the Kaaitheater (Brussels), the Market Theatre (Johannesburg), Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro de Bogota and the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb is proud to present the first series of staged speeches: Rhetorical, scripted by Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom and Aubrey Sekhabi and directed by Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom.
Rhetorical is a rhetorical analysis of Thabo Mbeki's legacy through some key events during his presidency - and some of his most famous speeches. The play explores Mbeki's art of persuasion - and possible lack of persuasion - and attempts, at the same time, to satirically represent the effect of his policies and style of governance on the average) citizens of the New South Africa.
The premise of the story is a narrative presentation of Mbeki's days in high office as told intriguingly - and effusively - by a colourful and fictional youth leader, Dada Mokone, who is based on real-life firebrand ANC Youth League president, Julius Malema.
Key speeches that are examined include I am an African, Two Nations, Nelson Mandela Memorial Lecture and his Resignation speech after he was recalled by the National Executive Committee of the ANC.
The play stars the sensational TV actor Fezile Mpela as Mbeki and Presley Chweneyagae of the Tsotsi fame as Mokone. The supporting roles are played by Phumzile Gumede, Tsholo Monedi and Ontiretse Mayentsa.

H&M Ad : The mother's confession
The parents of the boy at the centre of the “racist” H&M hoodie storm have spoken out about the huge reaction the clothing brand as well as the family have received.
Liam Mango was pictured in a hoodie on the H&M website which read ‘coolest monkey in the jungle.’
However after the image was posted online, the company faced a huge backlash, with members of the public calling the decision to use a black child to model the hoodie “racist” and “unacceptable.”
H&M swiftly apologised and Liam’s parents have now revealed they never saw the hoodie the same way as many members of the public.
Speaking on This Morning from Stockholm, Sweden, mother Terry and father Frank explained they didn’t even know about the hoodie before the internet erupted.
But Terry said even if she’d seen the slogan before, she doesn’t think that would have rung alarm bells for her.
“I wouldn’t see such a connection to anything other than my son modelling a shirt,” Terry explained.
“Until the controversy now, with the whole furore that is going on, then you kind of look back and wonder if you had noticed it, what would be our, or my, initial response to it.”
But Terry explained she doesn’t believe the furore has necessarily been unjust.
“It is not an overreaction when it comes to racism, everyone should act differently based on their opinions of what racism is,” she said, explaining that she’s faced racism and even been called a ‘monkey’ herself.
“To put the T-shirt and the word ‘monkey’ with racism, maybe that is not my way of looking at it,” Terry added.
“I’m just looking at Liam, a black young boy, modeling a T-shirt that has the word ‘monkey’ on it.
“Everybody should respect different opinions based on racism.”
The family have had to move out of their home, and Frank explained that they no longer have their “normal family life.”
“As much as people have gotten involved in this, for me it’s very important that people understand that me and Teresa, we have a son, we have other children in the home that we are raising, and we have an obligation to protect our children,” he said.
And the parents added that Liam doesn’t really understand the big fuss around him
“He’s aware he’s a superstar and people love him,” Terry said.

Lyrics:
Lomhlaba unzima, lomhlaba
[this world is a harsh place, this world]
Picture the end of a cycle
Here's the fire from heaven
There's a tired planeet closing down
No more news at eleven
Somewhere the last of a species has died
Somewhere a child is born
When I hold you, I tremble inside
Can we ride out the storm?
Are you tough enough -- can you take the strain?
Are you tough enough -- to walk in the burning rain
Are you tough enough -- can you take the change?
Are you tough enough -- baby just say!
Chorus:
Into the heart of the human dream
Into a strange new world
Remember me under the tree of man
Where I first heard your words
Gonna make it through, I can feel it
What we need is a miracle
What we need is some time
What we need is an angel of mercy
In this life
Are you tough enough -- can you take the heat?
Are you tough enough -- to walk in the burning street
Are you tough enough -- can you take the change
Are you tough enough -- baby just say!
Chorus...
There's your mama and your papa
Waving good-bye in the cold moonlight
In their eyes the confusion of a world gone by
And you hold me tightly as we step out
Into the morning light
And I know you are thinking that for something to be born
Somthing has to die.
Chorus...
Vele vele we mama kunjalo
[it is true, it's obvious. mama, it is just as you say].

WiGroup Nek Nomination
wiGroup was Nek Nominated in mid-Feb 2014, by Guy Ducasse to carry out a Proudly South African Nek Nomination, where instead of downing a beer(s) you do something that will help others. We were given a week to do it. This video is a snapshot of the day.
We chose to do two things - (1) run an Easter Egg hunt for some kids at the school of good hope (2) hold a Street Store where homeless people in the area could come and choose several pieces of donated clothing each.
We're paying it forward by nominating some of the wiGroup clients, namely Pick n Pay SmartShopper, Primi Piatti, MTN Mobile Money, and Brandhouse. We're really looking forward to seeing what they do.
