HISTORY:-
The Theosophy Society – Adyar is the name of a section of the Theosophical Society founded by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and others in 1882. Its headquarters moved with Blavatsky and president Henry Steel Olcott from New York to Adyar, an area of Chennai, in 1886. The designation 'Adyar' is added to make it clear that this is the Theosophical Society headquartered there, after the American section and some other lodges separated from it in 1895, under William Quan Judge
The US National Section of this organization is called the Theosophical Society in America located in Wheaton, Illinois.
The garden

Known as the Huddleston Gardens, the Theosophical Society garden lies on the south bank of the Adyar River and covers 260 acres. The garden has migratory birds, fruit bats, snakes, jackals, wild cats, mongooses, hares, and a variety of spiders. Trees include the rare mahogany and other trees from across the globe. The garden also has a 450-year-old banyan tree, which is known locally as Adyar aala maram, whose aerial roots cover some 60,000 sq m. The main trunk fell under its own weight in 1996.

The Theosophical Society -1875
It was founded by a Russian lady Madame Blavatsky and an American Colonel Henry.S.Oicott in USA (New York) to preach about God and Wisdom (Theos means God and Sophos means wisdom).
The main principles of the Theosophical Society were to develop the feeling of fraternity, to study ancient religions, philosophy and science, to find out the laws of Nature and development of divine power in man. Mrs.Annie Besant became the President of this society in 1893 and devoted herself to the revival of Hindu religion and Indian education. She founded the Central Hindu College at Benaras .Later it developed into the Benaras Hindu University.
Annie Besant started a newspaper called 'New India' and spread the Theosophical ideas. The headquarters of the Theosophical Society is at Adyar in Chennai where she established a big library in which she preserved the rare books of Sanskrit. Thus Theosophical society has played a leading role in the Indian Renaissance.

The Theosophical Society - Adyar - 6 IDIOTS
The Theosophical Society may be said to have begun when H.P. Blavatsky (HPB), under instructions from her Adept-Teachers, returned from India in 1871 to found an organization through which the West and the world in general would benefit from the Wisdom Teachings known today as Theosophy. Madame Blavatsky's first attempt to form a similar organization was made in Cairo. It did not succeed. She was then directed to meet Colonel H.S. Olcott who was investigating mediumistic phenomena at the Eddy Homestead in Chittenden, Vermont, USA, and publishing the results of his investigations in some newspapers. H.P. Blavatsky demonstrated that she could produce these phenomena herself, and suggested their real explanation. She wrote some strong and brilliant articles to newspapers and journals defending this 'true spiritualism' and exposing fraudulent mediums. In replying to an article on 'Rosicrucianism' she delivered what she characterized as her 'first occult shot', hinting at the sources of the great secret teachings of all times, guarded throughout the ages by the Wise Ones.
The Society is Founded
All this gave Madame Blavatsky great publicity, and her ideas on Occultism - a word she helped to make familiar to the world - heightened the interest in The Theosophical Society. Men and women of note thronged her rooms in New York. The formation of the 'Miracle Club' for private experiment was the next effort, which soon came to an end, as well as the backing of E. Gerry Brown's journal, The Spiritual Scientist, in 1878. A lecture by G.H. Felt on 7 September 1875 on 'The Lost Canon of Proportion of the Egyptians' led to the decision to form a society for the study of such subjects. 'The Theosophical Society' was the name chosen. The Society was to be truly eclectic and without distinctions. Several meetings were held to frame and pass Rules, and the present emblem was adopted. On 17 November 1875 Colonel Olcott gave his Inaugural Address, and this date was considered as the Foundation Day of The Theosophical Society.
In 1877, H.P. Blavatsky published Isis Unveiled, which, she said, was 'the fruit of somewhat intimate acquaintance with Eastern adepts and study of their science'. Its success was immediate throughout the world. Persons of note in many countries were interested; some joined and became well known in the Society.
Founders Settle in India
The two Founders were utterly determined to carry on the Movement. Late in 1878 they left New York for Bombay via England, and after their arrival in India great activity took place. They established the Headquarters of the Society in Bombay and their house was crowded with visitors. The Press gave them much notice, and the Colonel lectured in Bombay and elsewhere to overflowing audiences.
In 1879 Madame Blavatsky and Colonel Olcott went on a tour in the North of India, and were warmly welcomed everywhere. In Allahabad they stayed with Mr and Mrs Sinnett, both of whom joined the Society. Mr Sinnett was editor of The Pioneer, then India's foremost paper, and he had willingly offered to publish any interesting facts about their work. Finding their correspondence becoming too heavy, they determined to found The Theosophist, the first issue appearing on 1 October 1879. In November a meeting was held to celebrate the Society's Fourth Anniversary, at which three hundred guests were present. During the year H.P. Blavatsky began to outline a book which was advertised as 'The Secret Doctrine, a new version of Isis Unveiled'.
At Benares in December 1879, a meeting of the General Council of the Society was held under the designation 'The Theosophical Society and Universal Brotherhood'. At this meeting the Rules were revised, in the first of which appeared the words: 'The Theosophical Society was formed upon the basis of a Universal Brotherhood of Humanity'. Among the plans declared in Rule 8(c) appeared the following: 'To promote a feeling of Brotherhood among nations'.

Henry Steel Olcott might have had for moving the Society's headquarters from the United States to India. Rare film footage and archival photos highlight the program along with appearances by leading members of the Society, including international Theosophical Society president, Radha Burnier, Theosophical scholar and historian Michael Gomes, and more. Besant Nagar is one of Chennai's well known neighbourhoods, named after the famous lady theosophist Annie Besant, and adjoins the Theosophical Society. The main attraction here is Edward Elliot's beach, named after Edward Elliot, Governor of Madras. It is a part of Chennai which is inhabited by many famous personalities and affluent citizens. Alongside are many restaurants, cafes, shops and boutiques. The above video was taken during sunrise.

Chennai, on the Bay of Bengal in eastern India, is the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. 1.Marina Beach:
India’s largest beach happens to be Chennai’s Marina Beach which extends from Fort St. George to Besant Nagar.The average width of the beach is 300 m (980 ft) and the width at the widest stretch is 437 m (1,434 ft).
2.Kapaleeshwar Temple:
Apart from being a religious spot, what draws crowds to this temple is its unique architecture. The detailed Gopuram of this structure is 37 metres high and is a fine example of the Dravidian style of temple construction.
3.Government Museum:
The Government Museum or Madras Museum is a museum of human history and culture located in the neighbourhood of Egmore in Chennai, India. Started in 1851, it is the second oldest museum in India after the Indian Museum in Kolkata.
4.Valluvar Kottam:
Valluvar Kottam was built in the year 1976 to honour the great classical Tamil poet and saint Tiruvalluvar who wrote the famous Thirukkural. Three thousand stone blocks were used to create this memorial. All the 133 chapters of his work Thirukkural have been inscribed in the front hall corridor.
5.Edward Elliot's Beach:
Now renamed as Besant Nagar Beach, Elliot’s is one of the places to see in Chennai and less crowded than the popular Marina Beach. On the southern side this seashore are the famedAshta Lakshmi Temple and Velanganni Church, popular among the residents of Chennai.The Schmidt Memorial is yet another draw of Elliott Beach which was built in remembrance of a Dutch sailor, Karl Schmidt.

overing an area of 20 acres, the Semmozhi Poonga Park is a botanical garden.Overseen by the horticultural department, it is an ideal place to visit in Chennai with family. San Thome Basilica is a Roman Catholic minor basilica in Santhome, in the city of Chennai, India. It was built in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers, over the tomb of Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus.
8.Arignar Anna Zoological Park:
Located 35 km from the city centre, this zoological park is one of the places to visit in Chennai with kids. The expansive grounds of the zoo are home to 1500 species of wild beings, some of which are even endangered.
9.Pulicat Lake:
Formed by the backwaters of the Bay of Bengal, Pulicat is the second largest lagoon in India that has brackish water.
