Kilkenny Lá na mBan
On 9th June 1918, over 1000 Kilkenny women marched through the city. They were protesting against government plans to force Irish men to join the British army.
When they got to the Tholsel, they signed their names and addresses under a pledge opposing conscription. They pledged they would not take men’s jobs if conscription was introduced.
The list of names, many of them still common family names in Kilkenny today, is in the archaeological society's archives at Rothe House. It's available to view at
The Kilkenny Archaeological Society (KAS) is collecting photos and stories from people with relatives on the list. Could one of them be your grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt or great-aunt? Please see the website for information on how to get involved.

Top best places to visit in Kilkenny, Ireland
Kilkenny is a small but very popular city in the ‘Sunny South East’ of Ireland.
The city is famous for its medieval architecture and is referred to as the Marble City after the black polished limestone quarried around the city.
The principal attraction and dominant feature in the city is the Kilkenny Castle.
This Norman Castle and Gardens was built around year 1200 and was an important element of the defenses in this town.
Another stunning building is home to one of the oldest schools in Ireland, St Kieran’s College.
The city also has some museums that are worth a visit, one of it is the Rothe House, a unique 16th century Irish merchant’s townhouse complex.
There is also a brewery, you can take a tour in called Smithwick’s Experience.
However most people come here just relax or to stroll along the River Nore.
Kilkenny's heritage is evident in the city and environs including historic buildings, such as:
Built as place for collecting tolls, the Tholsel, is used today as the city hall.
The main City Library is of the quaint stone structure from the turn of the last century.
A significant local landmark, St Mary’s Cathedral, is situated on the highest point in the city.
Surrounded by the old city walls, including the last surviving gate of the town, there is also a 14th-century Dominican church, an impressive Black Abbey.
The second largest medieval cathedral in the country, St Canice’s Cathedral, has one of Ireland’s only accessible Round Towers.
From the top of this tower is the most amazing, 360 degree view of Kilkenny.

The Boiling Gourd - Part 1
A black humoured spoken word tale written by R. Keenonhang. It is the year 1879. In a shambolic cottage half sunk into a vast bog a stranger with the crookedest of jaws and an idle tramp sit lamenting over the frightful dose of fatal athlete's foot that has ravaged the country folk of a local village as well as pondering the age old question of whether a watched kettle boils. A short play inspired by John Millington Synge which also features a faceless doctor, a cryptic snail that communicates using backward incantations and a steel bucket, which might or might not contain all the answers to the mysteries of life and death. A misanthropic farce about the extraordinary centrifugal and metaphysical forces that dwell within a seemingly banal boiling gourd. My stories are heavily influenced by the likes of Woody Allen, Flann O'Brien (Myles na gCopaleen), John Millington Synge, Patrick McCabe, David Shrigley, Spike Milligan, Samuel Beckett, P.G. Wodehouse, Douglas Adams, Gary Larson, David Lynch etc. To hear more visit theboilinggourd.com
