Early Start - Stephen Jones, Federal Member for Throsby
The Federal Government today announced funding for a strategic teaching, research and community engagement initiative which, in a world first collaborative scheme, will deliver a new generation of graduates to work with young children aged from 0-12.
The $44 million Early Start inter-disciplinary project, to be based in the Faculty of Education at the University of Wollongong (UOW), will receive $31 million in funding through the Federal Government's Education Investment Fund (EIF). The remaining funding is coming from a philanthropic gift of $7 million from a private donor -- representing the biggest single donation ever made to UOW with the University providing the balance.
The donation has come from the Founder and Director of the Abbott Foundation, Mr Christopher Abbott, AM. In a supporting submission to the government for the project, Mr Abbott said that he has a strong philosophical belief in the importance of encouraging children to develop an interest in learning at a very young age. He created the Abbott Foundation in 2009 with the express purpose of supporting ventures that provide learning opportunities for young children which will promote their interest and capabilities for further education.
UOW Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings described the government's decision as fantastic news as the project will radically transform educational, health and social outcomes for children in regional, rural and remote communities. Early Start will respond directly on the early years of life and the social and economic value of providing resources to disadvantaged children, their families and capacity build communities.
Early Start is the only concrete long term and sustainable proposal that can systemically break the cycle of educational disadvantage, Professor Wellings said.
Professor Wellings paid special tribute to the Federal Government and its EIF Board for their recognition of the importance of this overall project and to Mr Abbott for his donation and support for the project.

8. August 2019 Newcastle beach day
We went to Throsby Creek and saw some pelicans. Then we went to Nobbys Beach where we walked to the lighthouse and along the beach. Then we did the Anzac Memorial Walk to Mereweather Beach and had lunch at Mereweather Beachhouse. On the way back we stopped for some Cocowhip, wich is basically healthy ice cream. It started raining for a few minutes so we saw a beautiful rainbow. In the evening we had a delicious home cooked meal.
