COLAS liveried 70806 purrs and whirrs through Romsey just before the arrival of Black 5 44932, heading for London via Salisbury. The engine hisses and clanks and seems to be leaving most of the effort to 33029 Glen Loy. By the time Whitchurch is reached the steamer is back on song and bowling along.

Replacing the Tin Bath originally scheduled for this day, the Railway Touring Company's 'South Yorkshireman' took to the rails on a Sunday morning with a real mixed bag of conditions for those at the lineside. Starting from Blackburn, the ECS for the tour had run empty stock from Carnforth to Hellifield hours ahead of its booked time on Saturday afternoon before continuing to Blackburn via Clitheroe on the Sunday morning...and passing a very foggy Wilpshire about a minute before we arrived. No bother though, we just turned round and drove over to what was meant to be the second shot instead, at Spring Vale. Located at the southern end of Darwen just before the entrance to Sough Tunnel on the Bolton line, I believe the last time we were here 6 1/2 years ago was the last time a steam hauled tour traversed this route, and unsurprisingly, since March 2013 the tree growth had made the shot I did last time impossible to use, so we set up alongside thestephengthompson and nige757 on the bridge in the cutting leading to the tunnel. Fortunately for us, the fog had cleared from this area and the sun was coming out as the fives could be heard slowly drawing up to the signal at the end of Darwen Loop, awaiting the passage of the Clitheroe bound service train coming the other way up the single line from Bromley Cross. Once the unit had passed northbound the pair got underway in spectacular and extremely noisy fashion, blasting up the steep grade into the tunnel.
After another 40 odd minutes of driving into the fog, back out then back in again we reached the Calder Valley, a route the tour hadn't originally been booked to use until a few days earlier until it was found that some of the planned circuit around South Yorkshire fell foul of gauging. It's been a long time since steam ran north up here but with the down platform at Moston now finally rebuilt, eliminating the long standing gauging issue, we had an opportunity to use the shot on the Rochdale canal at Slattocks, another we haven't used for 6 years. Although the fog did lift slightly in the time we were waiting, visibility was still only a couple of hundred yards or so as the fives flew past, making easy work of the uphill gradient towards Rochdale. The forecast before we went out hadn't said anything about fog in this area, nor most other areas for that matter, but it would be nearly 50 minutes after we left Slattocks that we finally drove out of it...

Castle Cement covers Clitheroe again
This is the view from the hills to the north of the Cement works in the Ribble Valley, at Clitheroe, Lancashire, England. Recorded on time-lapse in February, 2005.
The chimney on the right has since been demolished. But the chimney on the left, Kiln 7, is now permitted to replace all of the coal it used burn, with wastes-- chemical wastes, tars, tyres, animal wastes, and Lancashire County Council's wastes, as fuel.
In addition, it is permitted to substitute the rock quarried on site, with solid wastes eg.construction waste, solid waste from industrial filtration, sand casting waste, contaminated with metals, etc etc.
This kiln is now owned by Heidelberg Cement, via Hanson. According to its previous owners, this kiln has had problems with failure to disperse the emissions from the stack ever since it was built, in the 1980's.
In both 1995, and again in 1997, the British Government's own Environment Select Committee report, stated that no waste must be burned in the cement kilns in Clitheroe, simply because of the inadequate dispersion of the chimney emissions. They concluded this was caused by the combination of the unique local weather , and the topography. There are hills much higher than the top of the chimney on three sides, and this valley is frquently covered in low cloud, which acts like a blanket holding in the emissions.
When proposing to construct a scrubber to take out the sulphur content, Castle Cement themselves admitted that it would still result in breaches of the Air Quality standard for sulphur dioxide, in low wind speeds, in at least one location. This was at low wind speeds. They did not admit to the pollution levels when there was no wind. Nor for the levels of other pollutants.

Acton Bridge - Freight Variety - 21st May 2018
A Monday afternoon and evening visit to Acton Bridge while summer is here to stay, I didn’t plan on visiting the footbridge this time around and stopped in the shade on the station platform instead. There was plenty of freight variety about including TransPennine Class 68 training which this time was booked to stop at the station for a minute or so to simulate passengers getting on/off etc. GBRf new cement flow for Clitheroe was also seen with 66750 and a rake of 4-wheeler PCAs. Towards the end of the day the weather was a little hit & miss with it trying to rain as you will see in the video. Our DRS driver friend was also about and gave a nice tone or two with a wave on the Flasks consist of 2x 68s and 2 88s.

A day that I was on a Fellsman railtour would take a turn for the unexpected as Michael Portillo boarded the train at Ribblehead station ( to film an episode of the Great British Railway Journeys program ) and would get off again at Garsdale station . This is footage I thought was long lost but found it on a DVD I have found . These were the days when leaning out of the droplight was not frowned upon . Sorry for the quality as like I mentioned it's taken from a DVD .
Blackburn Train Station (Northern Rail) Commuter Hell
The idiocy of the Ivory tower occupying suit wearing non train commuting overlords of Northern Rail continues with this latest abomination of good ideas at Blackburn train station. Walking back and forth several times to get your ticket and get on the platform is far from a good idea and will most likely lead to people missing trains. Major facepalm!

The ancient market town of Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley is a perfect place to stay for visitors wishing to explore Lancashire's Forest of Bowland, one of England's 36 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Clitheroe actually dates back to Saxon times so by the time the imposing 12th century Norman Castle that towers over the town had been built, Clitheroe had already been around for nearly 1,000 years!

A very cold morning at Stafford Station - 27th December 2016.
Left very early morning on the 27th December to capture some early morning (well nearly) engineering workings.
During the Christmas Period, many lines around the United Kingdom were closed for vital network renewal. This is a time of the year when the network is least used and the orange army can really get to work and perform major maintenance. I popped down Stafford on the first train of the day to capture as many of these engineers as much as I could, in the freezing cold! Two ran near to time and two ran over two hours down. Other freight workings were captured during the morning.
