Wimborne Minster is a market town in East Dorset in South West England, and the name of the Church of England church in that town. Wimborne Minster is situated at the confluence of the River Stour and River Allen, 5 miles (8 km) north of Poole, on the Dorset Heaths. The town of Wimborne Minster is also recognised as part of the South East Dorset conurbation.
The architecture of Wimborne is regarded as one of the foremost collections of 15th-, 16th- and 17th-century buildings in Dorset. Local planning has restricted the construction of new buildings in areas such as the Cornmarket and the High Street, resulting in the preservation of almost all of the original buildings. The most interesting examples of English architecture include the centuries-old Wimborne Minster, the town hall, the Priest's House Museum and dozens of original 16th-, 17th- and 18th-century fronted shops and pubs. The town is home to the Tivoli Theatre, a 1930s art deco cinema and theatre.
Every summer in June the town holds the Wimborne Minster Folk Festival. Founded in 1980, the annual event of traditional folk dance and music has become the focal point for one of the largest gathering of dance teams and musicians in the South of England. The festival involves morris dancing, Appalachian dancing, concerts, workshops and children's activities.
From 1847 to 1977 Wimborne was served by a two-platform railway station. The station was built for the Southampton and Dorchester Railway, later part of the London and South Western Railway. It was expanded when the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway was constructed between Bath and Poole. Wimborne was used as a reversing point on the Somerset and Dorset, but its importance was reduced when an avoiding line was built from Bailey Gate to Broadstone Junction. The station had a large goods yard, the site of which is used for the weekly Wimborne Market.

Susie Dent - Wimborne show
Tivoli Theatre Wimborne : Thur 27 Sept 2018
The Secret Lives of Words Tour
Take a journey into the curious, unexpected, and downright surreal origins of the words we use every day. Susie will retell the adventures that lie hidden within such words as lasagne (involving a chamber pot) and bugbear (a terrorising monster), and explain such oddities as the silent h in ghost and the mysterious disappearance of kempt, gormful, and ruly (and yes, you really can be gruntled). She will look to the lexicon of the past to fill some of today’s linguistic gaps – such as the frenzied fit of tidying we all do just as guests are about to descend (that’s a scurryfunge).
Alongside such forgotten stories you will hear Susie’s selection of the funniest moments from her 25 years on Countdown and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, as well as some startling results from eavesdropping on a group of waiters.
Each evening will include some of Susie’s favourite words from the towns and regions she visits, and she’ll be asking the audience for theirs. In fact, she’ll be welcoming any questions about word origins, usage irritations, the dreaded impact of Americanization, and the very future of our language in her very own ‘word surgery’.

There’s just no stopping the incredible success of the critically acclaimed Billy Joel Songbook led by the phenomenal Elio Pace and his amazing band. About to complete a 4th incredibly successful year of touring the ‘Songbook’ and selling out theatres across the UK and Europe, in May 2018 they bring you a brand new, exclusive 10-date tour performing two complete Billy Joel classic albums, Glass Houses (1980) and An Innocent Man (1983).
And if that wasn’t thrilling enough for Billy Joel fans, Elio and his band are delighted to be joined by Billy Joel’s lead guitarist on those classic albums, David Brown.
Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA, David Brown carries with him a significant piece of pop music history. He joined Billy Joel’s band as lead guitarist in 1978, at the age of 22, starting with an uncredited appearance on the album 52nd Street, due to the album’s artwork already having been submitted to the record company for printing. He went on to record a string of 13 platinum albums and tour the world over with Billy Joel until 1991. David’s other stellar credits include touring and recording with icons such as Paul McCartney, Simon and Garfunkel, Dr. John, Peter, Paul & Mary and Julian Lennon. Says Fly Amero of Orleans, “To my knowledge, there are only three guitarists in all of pop music history who might be considered so unique and original as to be utterly unprecedented and unemulated: Les Paul, Mark Knopfler and David Brown.”
THIS REALLY IS ONE OF THOSE SHOWS YOU SIMPLY CANNOT MISS!
