ch 9) Slavery Without Submission, Emancipation Without Freedom
chapter 9: A People's History (Of The United States) Howard Zinn.
~
Chapter 9, Slavery Without Submission, Emancipation Without Freedom addresses slave rebellions, the abolition movement, the Civil War, and the effect of these events on African-Americans. Zinn writes that the large-scale violence of the war was used to end slavery instead of the small-scale violence of the rebellions because the latter may have expanded beyond anti-slavery, resulting in a movement against the capitalist system. He writes that the war could limit the freedom granted to African-Americans by allowing the government control over how that freedom was gained.
HLS in the World | Leadership in America: A Conversation with U.S. Senators
A panel of five Senators in the 115th United States Congress -- Tom Cotton ’02, Tim Kaine ’83, Jack Reed ’82, Mark Warner ’80 and Elizabeth Warren -- discussed leadership in America and the need for active bipartisanship in tackling difficult issues on energy, immigration, health care, the environment, jobs, taxes, the economy and more. Political analyst and former presidential adviser David Gergen ’67 moderated the session titled “Leadership in America: A Conversation with U.S. Senators.”
The Senators' talk was part of the HLS in the World bicentennial summit which took place at Harvard Law School on Friday, October 27, 2017. Read more: For more on HLS' Bicentennial events, go to:
Applying Lessons Learned from the Master Settlement Agreement with Big Tobacco to Other Industries
The landmark 1998 Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) between 46 state’s attorneys general and the US tobacco industry set in motion an unprecedented decline in tobacco consumption, saving millions of lives and potentially billions of dollars. Putting public health ahead of corporate profit was a hard-fought battle, and lessons from the tobacco wars could have significant value in approaching similar manufacturers—including the pharmaceutical and sugar-sweetened beverage industries—in an effort to dramatically decrease the opioid and obesity crises.

The African-American history is fragment of America’s history which precisely converses the Black American traditional groups staying in United States of America. Maximum of this population are original people of Africa who were deliberately brought and kept in confinement in the United States of America from 1555 to 1865. Many blacks whose ancestors had emigrated from the Caribbean to America are also considered to be African-American as their roots go back to Central or West Africa.

Otis Mod. by Pacific? Mod. by Otis Bsmt. Traction Birdcage Shaft Elevators in San Francisco, CA
Note: This is a very long video, but I think these elevators deserved a long video, especially since they may no longer exist in this state.
These are very amazing elevators despite having been modernized. These are likely some of the last elevators in San Francisco to have a caged shaft. Sadly the scissor gates were replaced with automatic doors, and this was done in an ugly way. At least most of the hoistway doors (except on the first floor) appear to be original. Sadly, this building is being renovated, and it appears for fire safety reason the caged shaft will be replaced with a glass shaft (at least the elevators will still be scenic). I really hope they at least keep the caged cabs, but I fear for safety reasons they may replace or heavily redo the cabs (I hope they cover parts of the cab in glass instead of renovating the cab).

Freedman's Bank 150th Anniversary Celebration
On March 3, 2015, Operation HOPE Forums and the Afro-American History Society of the National Archives (AAHS) will recognize the 150th anniversary of the Freedman's Bank. Established on March 3, 1865, by President Abraham Lincoln, the Bank was a landmark institution that had over $57 million in deposits and 70,000 depositors. The Bank's records remain the single largest repository of lineage-linked African-American genealogy, containing upwards of 480,000 names.
Members of AAHS will present Freedman's Bank records at the National Archives, and there will be a moderated discussion with Operation HOPE Founder John Hope Bryant, Ambassador Andrew Young, ESSENCE Magazine Editor-In-Chief Vanessa DeLuca, and other dignitaries on the historical significance of the Bank and how its unfinished journey still resonates today in issues of poverty, income inequality, and race relations. A reception will follow.
The event is free and open to the public, register online.

Symposium of Architectural History The Whiteness of 19th Century American Architecture
This symposium examines the racial discourses that subtended American Architecture movements during the long nineteenth century. Explore this site to learn more about the specific themes, case studies and speakers that will be featured at this event. The Whiteness of American Architecture is organized by Charles Davis II, UB assistant professor of architecture.
About the symposium
“The Whiteness of 19th Century American Architecture” is a one-day symposium in architectural history organized by the School of Architecture and Planning at the University at Buffalo. This symposium is an outgrowth of the Race + Modern Architecture Project, an interdisciplinary workshop on the racial discourses of western architectural history from the Enlightenment to the present.
Participants
- Professor Mabel O. Wilson, Columbia GSAPP
- Dianne Harris, senior program officer at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
- Joanna Merwood-Salisbury, architectural historian
- Kathryn ‘Kate’ Holliday, architectural historian
- Charles Davis, assistant professor of architectural history and criticism at the University at Buffalo
Race + Modern Architecture Project
Race + Modern Architecture logo
The “Whiteness & American Architecture” symposium continues the research that began with the Race + Modern Architecture Project, a workshop conducted at Columbia University in 2013. The forthcoming co-edited volume, Race and Modern Architecture presents a collection of seventeen groundbreaking essays by distinguished scholars writing on the critical role of racial theory in shaping architectural discourse, from the Enlightenment to the present. The book, which grows out of a collaborative, interdisciplinary, multi-year research project, redresses longstanding neglect of racial discourses among architectural scholars. With individual essays exploring topics ranging from the role of race in eighteenth-century, Anglo-American neoclassical architecture, to 1970s radical design, the book reveals how the racial has been deployed to organize and conceptualize the spaces of modernity, from the individual building to the city to the nation to the planet.

Purpose and Themes
Our symposium will outline a critical history of the white cultural nationalisms that have proliferated under the rubric of American Architecture during the long nineteenth century. This theme will be explored chronologically from the late-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century and regionally from representative avant-garde movements on the East Coast to the regionalist architectural styles of the Midwest and West Coast. Such movements included the neoclassical revivals of the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, the Chicago School of Architecture and the Prairie Style, the East Bay Style on the West Coast, the Arts & Crafts movement across the continent, and various interwar movements that claimed to find unique historical origins for an autochthonous American style of building.
The five architectural historians in attendance have been charged with providing some preliminary answers to the central question of these proceedings:
What definitions of American identity have historically influenced the most celebrated national architectural movements of the long nineteenth century, and how was this influence been manifested in the labor relations, ideological commitments and material dimensions of innovative architectural forms?
