The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft
At the 31st of July 2011 we visted the Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft near Doncaster, during our holiday in the UK. This museum has the world's largest collection of historic trolleybuses, most of which are Serviceable. At least one weekend a month the museum is open and on these days the trolleybuses are in public service on a private owned terrain. Besides the the mostly British trolleybuses there are also some trolleybuses from the European continent, such as trolleybuses from Aachen (D) en Limoges and Marseille (F). If you are a trolleybus Fan the museum is an absolute must see.

European Trolleybuses at Sandtoft 2007
This shows some of our trolleybuses working on the European Weekend at Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft in the UK.
The first is Limoges no. 5, a Vetra CB60 built in 1943. She is affectionately known as 'Vera', but has a complicated driving method with the left-foot accelerator being in reverse - ie. you have to release it to go faster!
The second is Liege 425, a Fabrique Nationale built in 1932. As such it is the third oldest operating trolleybus in the world, and certainly the oldest on the European continent. It has the strange arrangement of one boom (trolley pole) being mounted on top of the other, instead of side-by-side.
Also on the video is Porto 140, although not on the move here. This is one of the last double-deck trolleybuses which operated in service in the world, all others now being single-deck.
The last part shows Marseille 202 which is currently being restored at the museum.

Sandtoft Gathering 2019
28 July 2019 saw the annual vintage vehicle gathering at the Trolleybus Museum, Sandtoft. Plenty of visiting buses and cars with the museums own trolleybuses running on a damp day complimented by tours around the district on the visiting buses.
Not as busy as previous years, but enough to see and do nevertheless. The drive home however, was particularly horrendous as the heavens opened!
Sandtoft Gathering 2014 at The Trolleybus Museum
Affiefilms travels from Lancashire to the Trolleybus Museum in Sandtoft - North Lincolnshire to film a Gathering of vintage vehicles and also film the many trolleybuses that you can take a ride on.
We start our adventure in Doncaster at C6 of the bus terminal, were we are picked up by a vintage bus and taken on a 40 minute ride, through Doncaster and out into the countryside. Arriving at the museum to the sound of buses, musical organ music and the clicking of cameras.
For this is a place for bus enthusiasts and classic car fans, but also for those people who want to enjoy a step back into time.
I have little knowledge of buses or for that matter cars, but I do enjoy the atmosphere and history. Everybody seems to be enjoying the nostalgia.

Sandtoft Trolley Bus Museum 15 August 2010
The #8 trolley bus in Bradford ran every few minutes between the Royal Infirmary in Duckworth Lane and Sunbridge Road in the City Centre via Toller Lane, Whetley Hill and Westgate. It provided a reliable means of getting to and from work for me when we lived in Manningham between 1965 and 1969. In 1911 Bradford became the first city in Britain to introduce trolley-buses (or trackless as they were called by my Auntie Nora and other Bradfordians) and was also the last city in which they operated, the final service running on 26 March, 1972. The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft has the world's largest collection of preserved historic trolleybuses. Vistors can take rides on these and have a trip to the Isle of Axholme on a vintage motorbus which can also be seen returning to the Museum in this clip. It is run entirely by volunteers and makes an interesting day out. sandtoft.org
