Celebration At Coates1977
Thames and Severn canal, Coates portal of Sapperton tunnel July 1977.
After 18 months of restoration, the restored façade of Sapperton tunnel is celebrated with a canal fair.
Watch out for brief shots of Michael Handford speaking to celebrated waterway author John Gagg, Cirencester silver band, lots of volunteers, stonemason Bruce Russell and the Earl Bathurst.
On the same day I was completing the filming of Façade (in standard 8mm).
Filmed in Kodachrome 40 Super 8 with Canon 512XLE. Sound track as recaptured from 1977 master track on reel to reel tape.
Sapperton Canal Tunnel
The Sapperton Tunnel is on the Thames and Severn Canal near Cirencester in Gloucestershire, England. After five years of construction it was opened on 20 April 1789. With a length of 3,817 yards it was the longest canal tunnel, and the longest tunnel of any kind, in England until 1811.
Mrs Emily Elliot of Frampton Mansell (aged 84 when recorded c.1961) and Mrs Lily Moss of Lechlade (recorded c. 1965) share their memories of Sapperton Tunnel.

Cotswold AONB England UK ???????? Part 1
Cotswolds
__________
The Cotswolds is an area in south central and south west England comprising the Cotswold Hills, a range of rolling hills that rise from the meadows of the upper Thames to an escarpment, known as the Cotswold Edge, above the Severn Valley and Evesham Vale. The area is defined by the bedrock of Jurassic limestone that creates a type of grassland habitat rare in the UK and that is quarried for the golden-coloured Cotswold stone. It contains unique features derived from the use of this mineral; the predominantly rural landscape contains stone-built villages, historical towns and stately homes and gardens.
Designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1966, the Cotswolds covers 787 square miles (2,040 km2) and is the second largest protected landscape in England (second to the Lake District) and the largest AONB.Its boundaries are roughly 25 miles (40 km) across and 90 miles (140 km) long, stretching south-west from just south of Stratford-upon-Avon to just south of Bath. It lies across the boundaries of several English counties; mainly Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, and parts of Wiltshire, Somerset, Worcestershire and Warwickshire. The highest point of the region is Cleeve Hill at 1,083 ft (330 m),[6] just east of Cheltenham.
The hills give their name to the Cotswold local-government district, formed on 1 April 1974, which administers over half of the area. Most of the District is in the county of Gloucestershire; some 80% of it is within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The main town is Cirencester and the Cotswold District Council offices are located in that community. The population of the 450-square-mile (1,200 km2) District was about 83,000 in 2011. The much larger area referred to as the Cotswolds encompasses nearly 800 square miles (2,100 km2),over five counties: Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire, and Worcestershire. The population of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty was 139,000 in 2016.

COTSWOLD CANALS - archive film Sapperton Tunnel 1976 and 1977
Sapperton Canal Tunnel (Thames & Severn Canal) eastern portal, Coates, Gloucestershire.
Archive film from 1976 and 1977 of restoration of the tunnel façade at Coates by the Cotswold Canals Trust (called the Stroudwater Thames & Severn Canal Trust Ltd on incorporation)
When built, this tunnel was the longest of its kind in the world, and is the largest structure on the Thames & Severn canal. It is currently blocked by roof lining falls.
In 1976 the 200 year old tunnel portal had fallen into a very poor state, and the trust engaged stonemason Bruce Russell to rebuild the stone structure.
Eco was not an expression used at the time, but the Trust managed to raise the funds by various methods, including used car batteries and waste paper and cardboard recycling (which involved a van and a small BMC lorry, renting premises and using old farm equipment for compaction - plus a lot of volunteers)
On site, Jacquie and Martin Andrews ran a sales and information centre at weekends and bank holidays from a £25 caravan. There were generous donations enabling the £4,000 for the project to be raised.
In 1976 the Trust was using a government Job Creation Scheme to employ a small band of youngsters on the canal in the Stroud Valleys, and were allowed to allocate one of these - Gary Drew - to work alongside the stonemason.
During the summer of 1976, Waterway Recovery Group based a volunteer work camp at Coates, and cleared the Kings Reach section of waterway extending eastwards from the tunnel.
(locally called the King's Reach because King George III had visited the site during the original construction)
By the winter of 1976 a small, outboard powered, family boat ( a wilderness boats Water Rat) was trailed to the site, and a band of enthusiasts made their way into the tunnel to near the first roof fall.
In 1977 a Canal Fair celebrated the restoration, with the Earl Bathurst unveiling a plaque.
The Trust issued a limited issue commemorative horse brass to mark the event and to raise funds. (Jacquie Andrews tells me that she proudly owns number 8.)
The landlord of the nearby Tunnel House Inn provided great assistance throughout the project, including housing the summer work camp in a barn.
To improve the presentation of this film, I have overlaid digital titles over the original filmed titles which used letraset characters transferred onto coloured card, and which I was never happy with.
I have used a simple bold font in white, similar to the filmed titles for the TV Morse drama series of the era, having seen the late actor John Thaw at Tunnel House when I was filming Bruce Russell there.
MIKRON THEATRE GROUP, (led at the time by Mike Lucas) who continue to travel and promote the inland waterways of Great Britain, kindly gave permission for The Navvy Men to be used on this film for promotion of restoration of the Cotswold Canals.
Filmed in Kodachrome standard 8mm on Quartz and Quartz 5 clockwork powered cameras.

Our Babymoon at Barnsley House | Cirencester
Hey guys!
Wow! What a weekend. We first stayed at Barnsley House (not in Barnsley) after our wedding in 2013. It's a beautiful spa hotel set just outside Cirencester so only about a 30 minute drive from our house.
We spent two nights here and had a spa treatment each and spent time in the outdoor Jacuzzi pool. As you'll see we ate very well.
It was hard to film on occasion as I didn't want to violate anyone else's privacy but here's a little look at what we got up to.
Herd of alpacas on Cirencester farm sport unusual new hairdos - Daily Mail
A herd of Cotswold alpacas have been given bizarre new haircuts (pictured) for summer, including one styled to look like a poodle and another like a dinosaur. Helen Kendall Smith, 53, cut the coats of ten of her 30-strong flock to celebrate a decade of breeding the animals in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. The alpaca are sheared annually to stop their fleeces getting too long and causing them distress, but this year Ms Smith decided to give her flock more unusual styles than they were used to.

Day 375 - Today we're exploring a freaking castle! We're in Lancaster, England and we're touring an ancient castle that was literally built in the 1100s! It also used to be a jail which makes it pretty much the creepiest place on earth. But it's also insanely beautiful!
