The Sea Turtle Hospital
In the Florida Keys, the Turtle Hospital is fighting to save the dwindling population of American sea turtles. The hospital, which works to rehabilitate sick and injured sea turtles, treats human-caused conditions like flipper amputations, shell damage from boat collisions, and intestinal issues from ingesting plastic bags and fishing line. The most common surgery performed at the Turtle Hospital is the removal of viral tumors called Fibropapilloma, that affect over half of green sea turtles. In this short film, The Atlantic goes inside the Turtle Hospital to see firsthand the fight against sea turtle extinction.

After Disney World we went tp Kennedy Space Center . We took the bus tour to see the Apollo. The complex was huge and i couldn't believe it was that big. After Kennedy Space Center we drove to Cocoa Beach. Unfortunaly the rain started en from that day we only had rain. After Cocoa Beach we went to Key Largo. We wanted to see Key West. During the drive we stopped by Marathon to visit the Turtle Hospital. They cure injured and helped sick turtles. After the hosiptal we visited to Key West for a couple of hours. From Key Largo we drove to Clearwater to see the Aquamarine

At a May 12, 2012, Sea Turtle Hospital fundraiser and book-signing event in the Litchfield area of Pawleys Island. Author Mary Alice Monroe spoke about her new book, Beach House Memories. She is a long-time sea turtle watcher and supporter of the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston, SC, where the Sea Turtle Hospital is located and operated by Sea Turtle Rescue of the SC Department of Natural Resources, and guided by DuBose Griffin, SC sea turtle coordinator, who also spoke. Also present were Turtle Hospital Biologist Christi Hughes and Cindy Roe Ware, annual giving/institutional advancement, SC Aquarium.
From May to August, loggerhead sea turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs with hatching continuing into October. Loggerhead nesting in South Carolina has been well documented and has averaged 3,378 nests per year over the last 10 years. Last year was a busy year with over 4,000 nests reported.
DNR uses DNA genetic fingerprinting (CSI for sea turtles) to identify individual loggerhead nesting females, providing a census of the actual nesting population. This year (2012) marks year three of this project, which has identified 3,694 individual adult female loggerheads.
Support of coastal residents and visitors is needed to educate all to Keep Light's Out for Loggerheads.
More than SC 1,100 volunteers, including South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts (SCUTE) help protect nests and document sea turtles that wash ashore. DNR staff members also rescue live sea turtles in need of care.
South Carolina Aquarium planners are developing a pan to bring the Sea Turtle Hospital up to the first floor.
The organization says it hopes to demonstrate the care, education and conservation efforts undertaken everyday on the endangered sea turtles found off the coast.
The Sea Turtle Rescue Program has treated and released 83 threatened and endangered sea turtles back into the wild.
The Aquarium says it seeks to partner with individuals, organizations and businesses over the next three years.

Did we find it? We go out on a lazy Sunday to find a local beach in Marathon, Florida and hunt down some geocaches.
Geocaching:
Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called geocaches or caches, anywhere in the world.
A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook (with a pen or pencil). The geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name. After signing the log, the cache must be placed back exactly where the person found it. Larger containers such as plastic storage containers (Tupperware or similar) or ammunition boxes can also contain items for trading, such as toys or trinkets, usually of more sentimental worth than financial. Geocaching shares many aspects with benchmarking, trigpointing, orienteering, treasure-hunting, letterboxing, and waymarking.
Marathon Florida:
Marathon is a city on Knight's Key, Boot Key, Key Vaca, Fat Deer Key, Long Point Key, Crawl Key and Grassy Key islands in the middle of the Florida Keys, in Monroe County, Florida, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,255. As of 2014, the population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau is 8,708.
Though the area has been settled for some time, Marathon is a relatively new city, incorporated in 1999. The city's boundaries (according to both the city and a 2001 Rand McNally road map of the Keys) extend from the east end of the Seven Mile Bridge (Mile Marker 47) to the west end of Tom's Harbor Bridge (Mile Marker 61), excluding that portion of the area within the city limits of Key Colony Beach. Among the islands found within the city limits are Boot Key, Knight's Key, Hog Key, Vaca Key, Stirrup Key, Crawl Key, Little Crawl Key, East and West Sister’s Island, Deer Key, Fat Deer Key (excluding the portion in Key Colony Beach), Long Point Key, and Grassy Key.
The name Marathon dates back to the origin of the Florida East Coast Railroad. The name came about by the railroad workers who were working night and day to complete the railway – due to the unrelenting pace and struggle to complete the project, many of the workers complained that this [the project] is getting to be a real Marathon, and was later used to name the local station along the railroad.
The late noted Keys historian Dan Gallager in his book Florida's Great Ocean Railway credits New York playwright Wiiter Bynner for naming Marathon. According to Gallager, J.R. Parrott, then Florida East Coast Railway's President and General Manager, invited Brynner to the Keys to 'plot stations for the railroad.' When asked to generate a name for the station at Key Vaca, Brynner proposed the name Marathon, inspired by the following passage from Byron: The mountains look on Marathon -- and Marathon looks on the sea.

Banana Bay Resort & Marina after hurricane Irma located in Marathon, Florida Keys. Tennis court fencing needs fixing. Pool and jacuzzi needs repairs. There is a lot of grass in the boat launch area but all in all the resort and marina look pretty good. It is definitely open!

Groundbreaking Chemo Tumor Treatment for Turtles
A groundbreaking alternative procedure used to treat tumors on sea turtles was performed at the Florida Keys-based Turtle Hospital Saturday, in partnership with researchers from the University of Florida.
The electrochemotherapy treatments, the first of their kind in the United States, are part of a pilot study being conducted on green sea turtles with fibropapilloma, cauliflower-like tumor growths that develop as a result of a herpes-like virus affecting many sea turtles around the world.
The virus does not affect humans.
Researchers want to help get these growths under better under control because green sea turtles are a threatened species. Traditionally, the tumors have been surgically removed, but the surgery is more complicated and stressful for infected turtles.
We came down to the Florida Keys to help here at the Marathon Turtle Hospital with a groundbreaking treatment, said Dr. Anna Szivek, assistant professor of oncology at the veterinary college of University of Florida. The type of treatment we're doing is called electrochemotherapy, and the nice thing with it it’s much less invasive than a surgical removal.
Szivek added the treatment involves short, low-level electric pulses that allow the cells to open and better absorb the chemo medication, commonly used in cancer treatment.
We are able to kind of kill the tumor from within and have the tumor shrink and then kind of fall off, she said.
On Saturday, Szivek and other turtle experts treated two green sea turtles, nicknamed Percy and Daley. They are to remain onsite at the Turtle Hospital over several months to ensure the tumors are shrinking and fall off.
The Turtle Hospital in the Florida Keys has been rescuing, rehabilitating and returning turtles to the wild for over 30 years, including assisting scores of hatchlings gone astray after exiting their nests as well.
Opened in September of 1986 as the world's first state licensed veterinary sea turtle hospital, the facility is equipped with three turtle ambulances for patient transport.

Secondly we went the Turtle Hospital, Rescue, Rehab, Release in Marathon. The turtle hospital provide rehabilitation to injured turtles in the area. If possible, they are released back into the ocean once they are treated. We found out loads of information about various types of turtles, the work they do at the hospital, the leading causes of turtle sicknesses and in injuries- and maybe most importantly what everyone can do to help protect our oceans and turtles. After returning to our hotel, we were surprised with a pickup in a huge stretch limousine! The limo dropped us off at the Florida Keys Brewing Company in Islamorada. Here we got a full tour of the brewery and got to taste a bunch of different beers they produce in their tasting room. Find more information here:
Lastly, because we are in the Florida Keys, we had to try a famous piece of Key Lime Pie. While in Key West we headed over to a well known Key Lime place called Kermit’s Key Lime Shop.

The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida, forming the southernmost portion of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. A trip to Blue Hole, Big Pine Key
Part of the National Key Deer Refuge, Blue Hole is the only freshwater lake in the Florida Keys. It is really an old rock quarry and is now home to birds, alligators, key deer, iguanas and other creatures.
