Lesson 08 Scarecrow Garden Protector
Gardening Art Lesson Plan 8: Scarecrow Tent Sentinel and Other Traditional Pest Controls
Objectives:
—Make a life-sized scarecrow to stand outside of the vine tent
—Learn about other traditional methods of pest control
—Learn design and construction with cloth and wood
—Have fun making and naming a garden mascot
What you need:
—Old clothes — like shirt, pants, boots, hat, gloves, socks, belt
—Skin coloured pillow case
—2 old pillows
—Permanent markers or acrylic paints, brushes and water
—Wig or Halloween costume hair or old string mop
—2 6-foot lengths 2X3 or 2X4 lumber for an armature
—Heavy cord or nylon rope about 3 feet
—Stuffing — straw, old sheets, whatever works
—2-inch screws or nails
—Screwdriver or hammer
—Sledge hammer
—Old silverware, old CD’s, clackers
What you do:
1. This is a group effort
2. Make a frame like a cross from 2 X 4 or 2 X 3 lumber, 5 feet tall and arms 4 feet wide
3. The horizontal part of the cross should be about 15 inches from the top of the vertical piece
4. Sharpen the bottom of the vertical piece like a stake so it can be driven into the ground
5. Nail or screw together where the pieces cross
6. Make a face on the pillowcase with marker or acrylic paint
7. Stuff it and attach hair with glue or by sewing
8. Pull over the top of the frame and tie at the bottom with cord about 1 foot down
9. Put the scarecrow’s clothes on the frame then stuff the clothes
10. The various pieces of clothing can be stapled to the frame to make sure they don’t come off.
11. Secure the pants to the frame by tying on with a rope belt or by stapling and screwing or nailing through the pants and pillow to the front of the frame
12. The shirt should cover over where the pants are attached — some designs have the pole extend through a hole in the seat of the pants
13. Drive the frame into the ground with a sledge hammer, using a small block of wood to protect the top of the head
14. Attach silverware, old CD’s or other clackers to some string and tie to the arms to further frighten away the birds
