Upper Lakes - Plitvice Lakes National Park - Day 9 Croatia Summer Road Trip || PartTimeWanderlust
Day 9
Our first of two days in Plitvice Lakes National Park - we arrived from Zadar early afternoon so had enough time to explore the upper lakes of the park. So many opportunities for great shots in this place – so glad we visited despite being warned of it being overcrowded with tourists. Yes the park was busy but (for me) it did not spoil the experience.
We are travelling from Dubrovnik to Zagreb via Split, Zadar and various national parks on the way! I hope you enjoy the vlogs – please like and subscribe to keep up-to-date!

Plitvička Jezera (Croatia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Plitvička Jezera in Croatia.
Hidden within the densely wooded mountain region of Mala Kapela is Croatia’s most famous natural landmark, the Plitvička Jezera Nature Park, a land of cascading lakes. It is a well-protected natural environment which developed in travertin synclines, a world of water and exceptional plant life. Caves such as the Šupljara Cave, situated within a ravine at Lower Lake were created many thousands of years ago. Erosion and corrosion in the karst caused cracks in the limestone layer and gradually carved out its wide limestone ravine. For seven kilometres sixteen lakes have formed within a gorge, similar to the links of a chain, and connected by various cascades and waterfalls. It is a strange area, full of mystique and for centuries, long forgotten, a no-man's-land of wonderful nature. There are the Upper and Lower Lakes. They differ not only in their location but particularly in their geological features. The Upper Lakes are located on a Dolomit base which forms the typical features of stream dolines and wooded subsidence whereas, in contrast, the Lower Lakes are situated within rocky limestone. Kozjak Lake is more than two kilometres long and stretches in a north-south direction framed by dense forests which extend to the shores of the lake. There are no footpaths, only tranquil boat trips that take travellers to the Lower Lakes. Depending on the quantity of available water, the white foam of the magnificent Veliki Slap Waterfall and its rushing waters produces a swirling mist created by millions of water droplets as onlookers enjoy the soothing drizzle. A constantly changing landscape, the Plitvice Lakes are a true miracle of nature.

The Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia’s most popular tourist attraction, was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. Located roughly halfway between capital city Zagreb and Zadar on the coast, the lakes are a definite must-see in Croatia. (As confirmed by the many emails we’ve received!)
The beauty of the National Park lies in its sixteen lakes, inter-connected by a series of waterfalls, and set in deep woodland populated by deer, bears, wolves, boars and rare bird species. The National Park covers a total area of 300 square kilometers, whilst the lakes join together over a distance of eight kilometers.

Plitvice Lakes National Park (Croatian: Nacionalni park Plitvička Jezera) is the oldest national park in Southeast Europe and the largest national park in Croatia also, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979.
Plitvice Lakes National Park contains a series of beautiful lakes, caves and waterfalls. These have been formed by processes typical of karst landscapes such as the deposition of travertine barriers, creating natural dams. These geological processes continue to this day.
If you're planning to visit Plitvice, the best time of the year is in mid Spring when the waterfalls are in full strength, also if you're able, visit the Park in Winter when snow covers the park.

Stunning Winter Croatia: The Husky and UNESCO World Heritage Site
There have been some spectacular videos coming out of Croatia in recent weeks highlighting its winter beauty. In what we plan to be our last on the subject, visit the UNESCO Plitvice Lakes through the eyes of a husky on virgin snow. Famous for its endless sun and fantastic beaches, when people think of the weather in Croatia, these are the images which are usually conjured up. But the country is breathatking, whatever the season, and the success of Advent in Zagreb, coupled with the unusual site of Dubrovnik covered in snow, have highlighted how magical Croatia is in the wintertime. And just one last video - we think... - for perhaps the most breathaking destination of all, and one which attracted over a million tourists last year. The UNESCO World Heritage Site that is Plitvice Lakes. With frozen waterfalls and virgin snow, what better way to experience it than a walk with the dog? All that remains is to include Ante's introduction, then sit back and watch the winter magic of Croatia unfold. Wow! total-croatia-news

A beautiful footage by a local trail runner (and alpinist, and MTB biker) Ante Tonči Fabris from our most visited Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera. I have a winter trip to Plitvice for quite some time on my mind, but maybe I should move it up on a priority list!

Ako video s Plitvica doživi 100 tisuća pogleda na Youtue-u, kupujem Miški velike ćevape - kazao nam je.

Exploring Plitvice Lakes Waterfalls in Croatia
During my trip to Croatia, we stopped at the Plitvice Lakes National Park and saw all of the amazing waterfalls! The Plitvice waterfalls are some of the prettiest waterfalls in Europe, and easily the best waterfalls in Croatia. I HIGHLY recommend putting Plitvice Lakes at the top of your list of things to do in Croatia - you'll be blown away!
We went to Plitvice in mid-May 2019, so this video should also give you an idea of what kind of crowds to expect during this time of year. I also make a recommendation as to where you may want to enter the park.

Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
Plitviče Lakes National Park is a 295-sq.-km forest reserve in central Croatia. It's known for a chain of 16 terraced lakes, joined by waterfalls, that extend into a limestone canyon. Walkways and hiking trails wind around and across the water, and an electric boat links the 12 upper and 4 lower lakes. The latter are the site of Veliki Slap, a 78m-high waterfall.

The Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia’s most popular tourist attraction, was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. Located roughly halfway between capital city Zagreb and Zadar on the coast, the lakes are a definite must-see in Croatia. The beauty of the National Park lies in its sixteen lakes, inter-connected by a series of waterfalls, and set in deep woodland populated by deer, bears, wolves, boars and rare bird species. The Park has a total area of 300 square kilometres, whilst the lakes join together over a distance of eight kilometres. Within the boundaries of this heavily forested national park, 16 crystalline lakes tumble into each other via a series of waterfalls and cascades. The mineral-rich waters carve through the rock, depositing tufa in continually changing formations. Clouds of butterflies drift above the 18km of wooden footbridges and pathways that snake around the edges and across the rumbling water.
It can take more than six hours to explore the lakes on foot, or you can slice two hours off by taking advantage of the park's free boats and buses (departing every 30 minutes from April to October). From Entrance 2, catch the bus to the top of the upper lakes and wander back down to the shore of Kozjak, the park's largest lake (about 4km in length). A boat will whisk you from here to the lower lakes, where the circuit culminates in the aptly named Veliki Slap, the tallest waterfall in Croatia (78m).
If you've don't have a lot of time, the upper lake section can be completed in two hours. The lower section takes about three, although we recommend that you start with the bus ride and end with the boat to save yourself a climb.
Unfortunately, swimming is not permitted in any of the lakes.
Plitvice Lakes in Croatia, the Oldest National Park in Southeast Europe
Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest national park in Southeast Europe and the largest national park in Croatia. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful natural sights in Europe. Due to its natural beauty and significance, this system of 16 interlinked lakes and a large forest complex around it were set aside as a national park in 1949. In 1979, Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register among the first natural sites worldwide.
The Plitvice Lakes had became a major tourist attraction in the late 19th century. The first hotel was built there in 1896, and as early as 1893 it already had a conservation committee. In 1949 the communist government of Yugoslavia nationalized the lakes and made them a national park. The park soon became one of Yugoslavia's most popular tourist attractions.
The lakes are renowned for their distinctive colours, ranging from azure to green, grey or blue. The colours change constantly depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight. The lakes are divided into the 12 Upper Lakes and the 4 Lower Lakes.
The Plitvice Lakes national park is heavily forested, mainly with beech, spruce, and fir trees, and features a mixture of Alpine and Mediterranean vegetation. It has a notably wide variety of plant communities, due to its range of microclimates, differing soils and varying levels of altitude.
The area is also home to an extremely wide variety of animal and bird species. Rare fauna such as the European brown bear, wolf, eagle, owl, lynx, wild cat and capercaillie can be found there, along with many more common species. At least 126 species of birds have been recorded there, of which 70 have been recorded as breeding there.
