The Summer Night Concert was performed this year on June 20th, 2019. It is an annual open-air event, which has been held since 2008. The previous series was the “Concert for Europe”, which took place from 2004 until 2007. The park of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna/Austria is the magical setting for the concert, which is free of charge for all residents and visitors of the city. The illustrious conductors who have previously led the orchestra at this event are Georges Prêtre, Daniel Barenboim, Franz Welser-Möst, Valery Gergiev, Lorin Maazel, Christoph Eschenbach, Zubin Mehta, and Semyon Bychkov.
Thanks to its UNESCO World Heritage setting in the Baroque park of Schönbrunn with the palace as a backdrop, the Summer Night Concert adds great visual charm to its superb musical quality. This event is classical music at its very best – made accessible to a broad public. Millions of viewers and listeners in more than 80 countries can follow the concert online, on TV and radio, and up to 100,000 Viennese and their guests assembled on the Great Parterre at the heart of Schönbrunn Park for the event.
Central to the programme of the Vienna Philharmonic’s 2019 Summer Night Concert was a musical history of the United States of America: the works that were heard this year were composed in or for the USA, while also constituting links with the Viennese musical tradition.

Johann Strauss II (October 25, 1825 – June 3, 1899), also known as Johann Strauss, Jr., the Younger, the Son (German: Sohn), Johann Baptist Strauss, was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. In his lifetime, he was known as The Waltz King, and was largely then responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century.
Some of Johann Strauss' most famous works include The Blue Danube, Kaiser-Walzer, Tales from the Vienna Woods, and the Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka. Among his operettas, Die Fledermaus and Der Zigeunerbaron are the best known.

Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare (performed by VPO brass section!)
This is a performance of the Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare by Richard Strauss at the Wiener Philharmoniker Ball in January 2011. The video was taken from a perspective behind me as we played the fanfare for the entry of the dignitaries and debutantes. It was the 70th anniversary of the Ball, and we had a a great time playing it. If you listen closely, you'll hear something I'm proud of... I play the famous low E-flat to high E-flat horn lick at the end of the 2nd time through. :)
The brass section you see in the video is mostly VPO brass players with some substitutes. To my left is Mark Gaal and in the row in front of me all the way to the left is Dietmar Küblböck.
Enjoy!

Christmas in Vienna 2018
Earning Ridicule from the Vienna Philharmonic
At Vienna’s Haus der Musik, every wannabe conductor gets a chance to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra...after a little coaching from Maestro Zubin Mehta. As I waved my virtual baton, the orchestra actually followed the beat I set. And when I got too sloppy, they put their instruments down and jeered. It was humiliating and fun at the same time.
When describing a museum in a Rick Steves guidebook, I make sure that my readers know not only the cost and the hours, but also how to fully experience and enjoy that particular sight. A good guidebook...it makes a big difference in your travels:

At the end of May, the Vienna Philharmonic invited guests to their traditional Summer Night Concert in the world capital of classical music, Vienna. Set in the imperial gardens of Schoenbrunn Palace, we captured the brilliant atmosphere of the evening in a 360° video.
For the 13th time the Vienna Philharmonic’s renowned Summer Night Concert took place in a spectacular open-air setting, just in front of Schoenbrunn Palace. Led by Russian conductor Semyon Bychkov the infamous Viennese orchestra presented a programme consisting mostly of French compositions. Once more, the Vienna Philharmonic underlined the importance of Vienna, as the centre for international classical music.
Accompanied by “Wiener Blut”, our 5-minute 360° video allows you to explore the unique atmosphere of this memorable evening. Follow us from the stage view, set in the midst of the Vienna Philharmonic, to the palace gardens and up to the grandly illuminated Gloriette.
