L'anse Aux Meadows - Newfoundland
Long before Christopher Columbus discovered the New World, the Vikings had crossed the Atlantic and beaten him to it. The proof can be found among the timber framed turf buildings excavated on the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula in Newfoundland. Closely resembling Norse dwellings, the site is the first known evidence of European influence in the Americas. Visitors learn about the Viking lifestyle and archeological discovery through various exhibits, and can explore the surrounding area with a number of hiking trails.

The Viking Trail - A Journey Across East Canada
Newfoundland is one of the most spectacular, untouched places you could ever experience. Starting in Halifax, Nova Scotia, we traveled north around the Cape Breton Highlands. Our journey continued via a ferry to Newfoundland, where we took The Viking Trail through Gros Morne National Park and onward to the northernmost tip of Newfoundland, where we spent time in St. Anthony whale watching and immersing ourselves in the culture of the unique northeast Canadian coast.

L'Anse aux Meadows Viking Adventure
By Peter Bull, Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism
After a good night's sleep in St. Anthony, my family & I headed north to L'Anse aux Meadows. Newfoundland and Labrador sure has its share of history. L'Anse aux Meadows is the location where Leif Eiriksson landed 500 years before Columbus. The site today is a perfect mix of displays, guided tours and interactive exhibits. We really loved L'Anse aux Meadows' hands-on approach to history. Ronan and Cormac had a great time trying on the Viking gear. They even got to give the blacksmith a hand making nails - working the bellows is harder work than it looks. We often hear of people driving from Gros Morne to L'Anse aux Meadows and going back the same day. Do yourself a favor if you are going to see the Viking site and spend at least one night at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula. You won't be disappointed, there is plenty to see and do.
