Take Your Grandma for a Trishaw Ride
It's a simple pleasure that we often take for granted: feeling the wind in our hair.
And it is precisely that pleasure that captures the essence of Cycling Without Age.
The movement started in Denmark in 2012 and has since expanded to more than 20 countries.
It began with one man's desire to bring the joy of cycling to people who'd lost the ability because of age.
In doing so, Ole Kassow created a space for something much deeper.
Not only did the rides foster a connection between the young and old, they gave the elderly a chance to revisit and remember the places they once knew, to share stories about the past and to see how life had changed.
Singapore is now home to Cycling Without Age's first Asian branch, and it's ripe with opportunity for the so-called pioneer generation to share about what life was like before Singapore's rapid - and unceasing - transformation went into full force.
So here's a chance to be a positive force in your community, to dedicate some time to the elderly, to show them they are valued, and in return, you get to experience your city in a different way.
And feel the wind in your hair.

Trishaw Talk
Pernille Bussone, a 36-year-old Danish expat and mother of two, has been going around Singapore almost every week for the past one year, on her 'Made in Denmark' trishaw.
She has been bringing joy to the elderly, who get a chance to venture a little further than their own corridors or four walls, as well as delivering the trishaw to those who wish to loan for a similar motive. It's not all rosy for this act of kindness, however, the one-man show hopes to find a way to sustain her operations in order to ensure that more elderly can get to go out and feel the wind in their hair.
While Pernille might have spearheaded the initiative Cycling Without Age here, she hopes the idea will take root and grow when she returns to her country.
The Straits Times executive photojournalist Kevin Lim looks at the people who have benefitted from this initiative and how one unique trishaw inspired multiple acts of kindness and friendships.

Kampong Buangkok: The last village in Singapore
Singapore only gained independence in 1965, but it is already the most expensive city in the world. As the city-state's wealth grew, its landscape also evolved rapidly — from trishaws and swamps to super cars and futuristic high-rises. But hidden amidst today’s extravagance is one tiny hamlet that refuses to catch up - Kampong Lorong Buangkok.
In 1956, a traditional medicine seller - Sng Teow Koon - bought the land that would become the village of Kampong Lorong Buangkok. In the 1960s, about 40 families lived in the kampong. As Singapore became more affluent, the number of residents steadily declined. Today, only 13 houses remain in Buangkok, and the village is the last of its kind.
Coconuts Singapore's Editor Hidayah Salamat and Coconuts TV decided to visited Buangkok to see the last Singaporean village before it disappears.

Trishaw at Cross Street, Singapore
April 17, 2018 Trishaw used to be Singapore’s Public Transport back in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s as there are many kampung (village) where there are no roads that can accommodate taxis. I remember taking trishaw from Telok Kurau Primary School back to my house 981-H Geylang Road. Today trishaw ferries tourists for city tour around Chinatown and Bras Basah area. #trishawsingapore
Singapore Bumboat Ride.mpg
I don't know where Singapore found the announcer for this bumboat tour recording, but he sounds like he's from The Valley or perhaps Disneyland.
The tour features Merlion--a mythical creature with a lion's head and a body and tail of a fish. This mixed up guy is Singapore's symbol.
TRISHAW UNCLE Rickshaw - Traditional Transport in Singapore - Bugis Street Market [HD]
Before World War II, rickshaws were an important part of urban public transportation. Rickshaws were taken over by the trishaw after the world war. The Trishaw has been discontinued for usage as a means of transportation after 1980. However, there are some trishaws left which now serve as tourist attractions, taking tourists for a ride around the downtown district for a unique Singapore experience.
Bugis, in Singapore, was renowned internationally from the 1950s to the 1980s for its nightly gathering of trans women, a phenomenon which made it one of Singapore's top tourist destinations during that period.
In the mid-1980s, Bugis Street underwent major urban redevelopment into a retail complex of modern shopping malls, restaurants and nightspots mixed with regulated back-alley roadside vendors. Underground digging to construct the Bugis MRT station prior to that also caused the upheaval and termination of nightly transgender sex bazaar culture, marking the end of a colourful and unique era in Singapore's history.
Today, the original Bugis Street is now a cobblestoned, relatively wide avenue sandwiched between the buildings of the Bugis Junction shopping complex. On the other hand, the lane presently touted as Bugis Street by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board is actually developed from New Bugis Street, formerly Albert Street, and is billed as the largest street-shopping location in Singapore. An attempt by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board to bring back the former exotic atmosphere was unsuccessful. Although the street is not a well-known tourist destination, it is frequented by many Singaporeans.

Dalah Trishaw
Dalah, Myanmar -- Trishaws come in various formats; this one was pedal-powered. My driver was a good sport when I turned the camera on him. He never broke a sweat the entire time he hauled me around the village, but I poured buckets just getting in and out of my seat.
