Wadden Sea | We WALKED to a German Island!
In this episode, we're going on a 3-hour mud flat hike across the ocean floor during low tide to walk to the German island of Baltrum. The Wadden Sea National Park (Wattenmeer) has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2009. During our Germany vacation to the North Sea, we also embark on a traditional German fishing boat (fish cutter) and see harbor seals! We then visit the islands of Baltrum and Spiekeroog where we explore the islands' interiors and typical German beaches, and their adorable beach baskets (Strandkorb).

Germany Free / Wadden Sea
The Wadden Sea lies across Holland, Germany and Denmark, forming a shallow body of water with tidal flats and wetlands. When someone hears let's walk on the mud for hours on end! they may feel a slight yucky sensation. But it's actually super cool. The place is amazing, with an outstanding biodiversity, now part of UNESCO's World Heritage List. We've done this (#wadlopen) while living in Holland and now here we are again, on the German side. The most interesting thing is having this surreal landscape all for yourself, as long as the eye can see. If you start early you can walk over to islands off the coast, which is absolutely incredible.

to be found between the North Cape and Sicily. This film shows the National Park Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea as it is: endless tidal flats, huge sand banks, extended saltmarshes and small islands -- inhabited by lots of animals but few people. Wadden Sea in 60 secs | UNESCO World Heritage
It is a world of extremes. The Wadden Sea covers over 10,000 square kilometers between islands, including the Halligens, and the North Sea coast. Life here is still determined by low and high tides. It is a unique habitat for over 10,000 different plant and animal species.
Mudflat Hiking in The Wadden Sea
A favorite pastime among the Dutch and the Germans is hiking the mudflats when it’s exposed—an activity known as Wattwandern in German and Wadlopen in Dutch.
Wattwandern is usually done barefoot, allowing the mud to ooze around the fingers and naturally massage the foot as one walks. Cockles, mussels and worms wiggle under the feet while prawns, small crabs, snails, and starfishes stranded by the retreating sea flash by the ankles. Every year tens of thousands of people walk across the mudflats to one of the several islands in the Wadden Sea left high and dry by the low tide. The walk is dangerous as the mud can sometime sink in without warning. There are marked routes and is important not deviate from the path.
The Wadden Sea is incredibly rich in biodiversity. More than 10,000 species of plants and animals live in this region, from microscopic organisms to fish, birds and mammals. Many fish species use the Wadden Sea as a nursery using the shallow basin to raise the young. Once they become adults, they migrate to the North Sea. Wadden Sea is also rich in food that arrive in plenty with each tide, drawing a large number of migratory birds such as waders, ducks, and geese, as well as gulls, terns and seals —especially seals. More than 30,000 harbor seals live in the Wadden Sea, hunting for food when the sea is flooded, and sunbathing when the sea is out.

The German Halligen islands, in the North Sea are threatened by the rise of the sea level, which could lead to their disappearance as Europes first climatic refugees. These Islands and their inhabitants are exposed to sudden rises of the sea level called Land Unter at least 10 to 30 times a year. A frequency in constant rising which will inevitably force the islanders to live off these islands

The North Sea coast of Germany is a great place to swim, sail or just do some sun bathing. But there are also sime great walks to be had across the mudflats, or Watt. Bianca Brüggemann from Ostfriesia takes visitors and locals on guided walks of the Watt, which is home to many animals and plants.

The Wadden Sea is an intertidal zone in the southeastern part of the North Sea.
It lies between the coast of northwestern continental Europe and the range of Frisian Islands, forming a shallow body of water with tidal flats and wetlands.
It is rich in biological diversity.
In 2009, the Dutch and German parts of the Wadden Sea were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List and the Danish part was added in June 2014.
The Wadden Sea is one of the world's seas whose coastline has been most modified by humans, via systems of dikes and causeways on the mainland and low-lying coastal islands.
The Wadden Sea stretches from Den Helder, in the northwest of the Netherlands, past the great river estuaries of Germany to its northern boundary at Skallingen north of Esbjerg in Denmark along a total length of some 500 km and a total area of about 10,000 square kilometres.
Within the Netherlands it is bounded from the IJsselmeer by the Afsluitdijk.
The area is typified by extensive tidal mud flats, deeper tidal trenches (tidal creeks) and the islands that are contained within this, a region continually contested by land and sea.
The islands are marked by dunes and wide, sandy beaches towards the North Sea and a low, tidal coast towards the Wadden Sea.
The Wadden Sea is famous for its rich flora and fauna, especially birds.
Hundreds of thousands of waders (shorebirds), ducks, and geese use the area as a migration stopover or wintering site, and it is also a rich habitat for gulls and terns.
According to J. B. MacKinnon, larger fish including sturgeons, rays, Atlantic salmon, brown trout, and others like lacuna snails and oyster beds that were once found elsewhere in the region have disappeared as well.
Wadden Sea is an important habitat for two species of seals, harbor and grey seals.
North Atlantic right whales and gray whales were once seen in the region, using the shallow, calm waters for either feeding and breeding before they were completely wiped out by shore-based whaling.
These two species are now thought to be either extinct or remnant populations of which low-tens at best survive.
Recent increases in number of North Atlantic humpback whales and minke whales might have resulted in more visits and possible re-colonization by the species to the areas especially around Marsdiep.

People in Germany flock to Baltic Sea coast during scorching heat
(8 Aug 2018) Large crowds of flocked to the beach of Warnemuende near Rostock in Northern Germany on Wednesday, as temperatures rose to nearly 40 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit) in the German capital Berlin.
Families and couples enjoyed the fresh breeze on the Baltic Sea coast, while playing in the water or sunbathing on towels and in beach chairs.
Sweltering weather continues to grip Europe, and Germans are experiencing an exceptionally hot summer.
