???? Self-guided tour of Isabela Island, Galapagos ???????? Puerto Villamil, Wall of Tears, El Estero
Another day, another island, the group heads to our next stop on our South American Journey, Isla Isabela, Galapagos. Isabela is one of the youngest islands in the Galapagos archipelago, and the difference from Isla Santa Cruz is immediately apparent.
The ground is covered largely by sharp, black volcanic rock, the beaches are littered with lava tubes and tunnels, and the vegetation seems much less developed due to the lack of soil. Even the streets seem to be a crushed gravel with very little actual pavement on the entire island.
With just one full day to explore the island, we decided on renting bikes to cover a lot of ground quickly. Starting in Puerto Villamil, we made our way West along the coach, as we moved past La Playita, Playa del Amor, Tunel de Estero, and the El Estero mangroves where we managed to spot some pink flamingos relaxing in the sun.
We also visited a few other local landmarks, including the Isabela Tortoise Center, and the Wall of Tears (Muro de las Lágrimas). There is a rich, and interesting human history to the Galapagos Islands that often gets overshadowed by the amazing wildlife.
The history of the Wall of Tears is not a nice one. The wall was built over 14 years back in the 1940s and 1950s by prisoners who were sent to Isabela Island. The establishment of a penal colony here was an easy choice for authorities as they knew it was virtually impossible for anyone to escape from the remote island. As for the wall itself, it was built by the inmates by hand.

Wall of Tears, Ecuador
The Wall of Tears is a historical site 5 km west of Puerto Villamil on Isabela Island in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. A penal colony existed on Isabela from 1944 to 1959 and the penal colony was always marked by abuse, and considered prisoners as slaves. One of the tasks entrusted to the prisoners, so they would have to do something, it was the construction of a wall with volcanic stones, Prisoners had to carry heavy stones from several kilometers. On this tour and during the construction of the wall, many fell due to insolation and lack of food. In addition, some died because the wall collapsed in a while. Many of these prisoners were buried in makeshift graves along the way. The result of this construction is what today is known as the Wall of Tears.
Isabela worked as a US military base but after the end of World War II, the forces withdrew. Thus, the Ecuadorian government decided to use the, by then, remote island to take the most dangerous prisoners in the country and found what they called a penal colony. Thus the facilities abandoned by soldiers of the United States for that prison were used. But the horror of the story begin 1946 when it was decided, as a punishment, that criminals pay their sentence with hard labor. The Wall of Tears never finished being constructed , it really did not have much purpose other than to hold prisoners in an activity, and it is an overwhelming formation of approximately 100 meters long, 3 meters wide and 5-6 m high, which is now a site to visit the island Isabela. Certainly the history of the penal colony of Isabela and the Wall of Tears is not the happiest history of the islands. The Wall of Tears, named for the suffering and pain of their builders, still stands , contrasting each day with the beautiful landscape that grows around it.

????Visiting the Charles Darwin Research Center in Galapagos Islands ????????Santa Cruz Island Ecuador
Each island within the Galapagos has a unique species of tortoise. Visiting the Charles Darwin Research Center on Santa Cruz is a great way to see the different sub-species of Galapagos tortoises, the Galapagos finches, and many of the other plant species.
Although it is not uncommon to stumble upon some of these gentle giants as you begin exploring the island outside of Puerto Ayora, the research center provides a great way to get up close to the best part - BABY TURTLES! The site is also the former home of the late Lonesome George, the last of his sub-species of tortoise.
We had rented bikes for the day so we took the rest of the daylight exploring the island and stumbling into various tanning spots for the marine iguanas. As usual, we opted to avoid the touristy crowds and dine with the locals, so we capped the night off with dinner and drinks at a night-market hidden just off the main strip (Av. Seymour).

San Cristobal Island Through My Eyes in The Galapagos, Ecuador
San Cristobal Island is my favourite island in the Galapagos. I was here for 2 months living on a reserve and also by the pier.
The Galapagos archipelago is part of Ecuador.
The capital of San Cristobal Island is Puerto Baquerzio Moreno, it's also the sea lion capital of the Galapagos, if not the world.
There are a few beaches that are walking distance from town: Playa Loberia, Playa Mann, Playa de Oro, and Playa Carola.
Darwin's Bay, officially known as Cerro Tijeretas, is about a 30-minute walk from town. It's my favorite place to snorkel. You can swim with sea turtles, marina iguanas and sea lions.
In the northern tip of San Cristobal Island is Punta Pitt, where you can find red and blue-footed boobies nesting. You have to take tour here.
Watching the sunset from Playa Loberia or Playa Mann is always epic.
The Galapagos Islands is the greatest place on Earth. If you ever have a chance, travel here.
Galápagos Honeymoon: Isabela, Puerto Villamil, Sierra Negra, Mosquera (Part 1/3)
After years of dreaming about the Galápagos Islands we finally were able to go there on our honeymoon.
It's one of the most amazing places we've ever seen. So much to see indeed that we had to split it into multiple videos.
In this first part we fly into the Galápagos Islands landing on the island of Baltra. From there we go on an excursion to Mosquera Island to swim with Sea Lions. Then we head towards the island of Isabela, visiting the amazing Las Tintoreras, the Tortoise Breeding Centre and the Sierra Negra volcano.
The article about our first impressions of the Galápagos Islands can be found here:

Welcome to our page. Thanks for checking us out!
We escaped Santa Cruz in hope of a new adventure in the coolest place on earth. We found our way over to Isabela Island the largest island of the archipelago. This large island has a small and laid-back population of just about 2500 people.
The small town of Puerto Villamil hosted our adventures for the second week and gave us a base camp to discover lost histories of abuse, wild flamingos, lava tunnels, erupting volcanoes and the world’s most northern penguin!
Enjoy
