Cantiga 183 - Pesar a Santa Maria
Alfonso X el Sabio (Toledo, 1221 - Sevilla, 1284) - Alphonse X of Castile, The Wise
This is about a miracle which Holy Mary performed in Faro* when it belonged to the Moors.
He who insults Her image greatly grieves Holy Mary, and She punishes him severely.
Concerning this, I shall tell of a miracle which the Holy Virgin Mary performed in Faro in the times of Aben Mafon*, who ruled the kingdom of the Algarve then as a courageous man in times of war or peace.
In that fortress there was a statue, as I learned, of the Glorious Virgin, made, as I shall describe for you, of skillfully carved stone. It was standing, as I found out for certain, on the shore facing out to sea.
It was known to have stood there ever since the time of the Christians, and hence the captives always prayed to it. They named the city Holy Mary of Faro for this reason.
However, the wicked moorish folk who were there resented this greatly and angrily threw it into the sea with great scorn. However, the Virgin, who holds the world in Her power and abhors arrogance, performed a great miracle because of this.
She caused them not to be able to catch any fish while they left that statue lying in the water. The Moors, when they saw this, raised it out of there and put it on the wall between the merlons.
From then on they caught more fish there than they had ever caught before, as I heard from Moors and Christians who told me the tale. Therefore, let us praise the Virgin in whom such beneficence lies.

* Aben Mafon: This is Musa ibn Muhammad ibn Nusair ibn Mahfudh, king of Niebla* and vassal of Alfonso X until Alfonso's conquest of Niebla in 1262.
*Niebla: Town and municipality located in the province of Huelva, in Andalusia, Spain

About Huesca:
Huesca is a small and quiet city that provides a large amount of historical and artistic patrimony as a result of the numerous and various cultures that inhabited its territory in the past. Huesca, the capital city of the province which shares the same name, is surrounded by beautiful and peaceful natural landscapes.
The city's modest dimensions will allow you to stroll into the city from one point to another and in one day you'll have enough time to enjoy Huesca's most remarkable architectural attractions.
Most of the historical buildings in Huesca have been built with sandstone, and thus have been deteriorated due to time's passing but thanks to it look more golden and magic
The old city walls, which protected the old town, have been partially kept up and are an interesting area to visit. This is the zone where Huesca's nightlife takes place in two zones: Tubo Alto and Tubo Bajo and where the night pubs and bars are.
We highly recommend you to walk up and down el Coso, a big avenue and shopping zone of the city located in its old town and that is surrounded by beautiful bourgeois style buildings from the beginning of the XX century.
