Baltimore is a major city in Maryland with a long history as an important seaport. Fort McHenry, birthplace of the U.S. national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” sits at the mouth of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Today, this harbor area offers shops, upscale crab shacks and attractions like the Civil War–era warship the USS Constellation and the National Aquarium, showcasing thousands of marine creatures.
Baltimore is a popular tourist destination in Maryland, in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States of America, near Washington, D.C. It is perhaps most famously known historically as the city where Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics for the Star Spangled Banner during the Battle of Baltimore of the War of 1812. Today it has become a major center for tourism and travel. Local highlights include excellent seafood (steamed blue crabs, raw oysters, Maryland crab cakes, and Maryland crab soup) and Camden Yards (the first retro major league ball park and where the Baltimore Orioles play). Baltimore possesses a vibrant arts scene with the largest free arts festival in the US (Artscape) occurring annually in July, a renowned arts museum American Visionary Arts Museum that is dedicated to outsider art, and the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins. It is also home to Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University, University of Baltimore, Loyola University, Goucher College, and the Notre Dame of Maryland University.
Baltimore has an absolutely staggering number of officially designated neighborhoods, Inner Harbor, If you are a tourist, you come here. Fells Point could not be more complementary to the Inner Harbor—historic. An incongruous mix of Baltimore's central business district, the University of Maryland-Baltimore, the awe inspiring Lexington Market, the infamously seedy Block, and the Bromo Arts District.
One of the nicest sections of the city, home to the performing arts district, Penn Station, and a host of other attractions (Walters Art Museum, the original Washington Monument, dining and wining on Charles St, the University of Baltimore, Station North Arts District etc.) that most visitors foolishly pass over. South Baltimore
Industrial blue-collar South Baltimore is dying, and is quickly being replaced with upscale gentrified neighborhoods like Federal Hill.
Most visitors to the area know only Johns Hopkins University and the always interesting commercial strip along Charles St nearby. But it is unfortunate that they overlook the quirkiest of quirky neighborhoods, Hampden. Infamous West Baltimore. If you have watched the Wire, this was where the crime was taking place! But don't be fooled. There are some major tourist draws here, like the Maryland Zoo in Druid Hill Park, Pimlico Racecourse, and Edgar Allen Poe's House.Baltimore's great rivalry between east and west is certainly an example of the narcissism of small differences. Attractions in the east are very few and far between, but things are changing fast as booming Johns Hopkins Medical Campus expands and demolishes in its wake.

Executive Ulman Unveils Walters Art Museum “Off the Wall” Exhibition in Howard County
ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Ken Ulman today unveiled an exciting outdoor art exhibition that is bringing replicas of paintings from the collection of the Walters Art Museum to prominent outdoor locations throughout the County.
“The treasures of the Walters Art Museum deserve a wide audience,” County Executive Ulman said. “These thought-provoking works of art will beautify some of the most popular areas in Howard County. This exhibition will strengthen the connections between Howard County and one of the region’s premier cultural institutions.”
The exhibition is funded with a $6,000 grant from the Howard County Arts Council’s Outreach Howard Grant Program, funded by Howard County Government.
Each year, Howard County provides grant funding to arts and cultural institutions in Baltimore City, including the Walters, which provide important benefits to Howard County residents. For the past two years, under County Executive Ulman, Howard County has designated additional funding for those institutions to bring their programming and resources to Howard County, through the Outreach Howard initiative.
“The Walters Art Museum has shared its impeccable collection of art for 80 years and we are extremely proud to expand that tradition at outdoor spaces in Howard County,” said Julia Marciari-Alexander, Executive Director at the Walters Art Museum. “As the community experiences reproductions of these famous paintings, we invite residents of the county to visit us and see the real works of art in person.”
“All of us at the Arts Council are excited about the Off the Wall exhibition,” said Coleen West, Executive Director of the Howard County Arts Council. “In developing the Outreach Howard Grant Program it was our goal to encourage the state’s world-class institutions to come to Howard County and partner with local groups to produce programs – right here – in our community. By taking artwork “off” the Walters’ walls and bringing it outside of the Beltway, we hope it will inspire people to explore the wonderful parks, galleries and community centers in Howard County and remind them that the great collections of the Walters are truly public.”
The Off the Wall exhibition through Outreach Howard is just one of several ways that the Ulman administration is supporting arts and culture:
• Funding for the Howard County Arts Council is at $1 million in the FY’15 budget, an all-time high, and a 30 percent increase for the prior year.
• Merriweather renovations – $19 million, with half funded through Howard County Grant funding.
• The budget includes $2 million so the Downtown Columbia Arts and Culture Commission can continue its work creating a vibrant cultural district with a renovated Merriweather Post Pavilion at its center. It is also committing an additional $1.5 million to continue planning and development of the important and exciting Inner Arbor project.
• The FY ’15 budget also contains $1.1 million to improve the Patapsco Female Institute in Ellicott City and make it a more attractive and functional space for theater performances. The multi-year plan will create an electrified stage space, bathroom facilities and other improvements for the benefit of arts patrons and the Ellicott City community.
“The Howard County Council is pleased to support these initiatives,” said Howard County Council Vice Chairperson Courtney Watson. “Arts and culture are the foundation of what makes a civil society, and we pride ourselves in those investments in Howard.”

AMERICAN VISIONARY ART MUSEUM: Greatest Collection Ever of Contemporary Art - Baltimore, MD
We visited this amazing art museum on MLK Jr. day which was the only day of the year it is open for free to the public. There are so many vibrant and interesting works that you could spend almost an entire day there. Most of the pieces were done by artists with mental illness which makes it much more fascinating than your average art museum. We also checked out the amazing gift shop which might be the best gift shop in the country and I'd say this is one of the best art museums in the country as well. If you're in Baltimore on a trip or just nearby you can't miss out on this place!
