Looking for a different walk, Clive goes to the banks of the Wash in lincolnshire. Between wild marshland and cultivated farmland, the sea bank protects the important agricultural landscape from flooding. Raised above the flat fenlands the bank provides views for many miles.

The Outer Trial Bank
In The Wash, a squarish estuary on the East coast of England, where Norfolk meets Lincolnshire, there is a peculiar island, perfectly circular, with a dimple in the middle resembling a giant doughnut. This doughnut, known as the ‘Outer Trial Bank’, is one of two islands constructed during the 1970s to study the feasibility of converting the entire estuary into a fresh water reservoir.
The idea was to build a tidal barrage across half of the Wash to capture freshwater from rivers flowing into the estuary. The plan failed spectacularly because the banks were built using mud dredged from the salt marsh, which was saline anyway, and it salinated the stored fresh water. The plan was shelved but not after £3 million were spent in futile. Now these artificial islands have gained new importance as a breeding bird colony, with around three thousand pairs of sea birds using it as their nest.
SIR PETER SCOTT LIGHTHOUSE
East Bank Lighthouse, or, more familiarly known as Sir Peter Scott’s Lighthouse, stands on the eastern bank at the mouth of the River Nene to the south of The Wash, a marine area which is one of England’s last great wildernesses, a place where you can enjoy true tranquillity, as well as the excitement of some of England’s great wildlife spectacles.
The Lighthouse comprises: kitchen, dining hall, reception room, gallery/studio, light room, four bedrooms, bathroom, shower room, wc and storage in the basement level.
It also benefits from approximately 1.7 Acres (stms) of garden, grounds and wetland wildfowl ponds.

Outer Trial Bank The Wash
Kayaking around the Outer Trial Bank in the Wash. A strange artificial island that was built as part of an experiment into freshwater storage in the 1970s, and has now become an important nesting site for seabirds.
Driving through the flood at Sutton Gault in Cambridgeshire
At least once a year, the road through Sutton Gault - a hamlet in Cambridgeshire, England - floods.
The only way through is in a large 4x4 or a tractor.

Time lapse compressing 4 hours into just over 10 minutes.
19000 images taken on board the Boston Belle, starting in the Marina, going through the Boston Grand Sluice, and then out through Boston along the River Witham. Passing the Stump, The Docks and the local Fishing Fleet. On to Cut End and past Tabs Head Buoy out into the Wash. We then turned into the River Welland where everyone had great view of the Seals before returning to Boston Marina.
On the trip we saw large flocks of Waders, Terns and many other birds.
Great company with Sally Keightley, Steve Keightley and others all enjoying the trip.
