Zaghouan | Water Temple | Barrage Sidi Medien | Exploring Tunisia
Time to get back to exploring Tunisia!!! This trip I go to Zaghouan where we visit the Water temple or Temple De Eaux in French. An ancient Roman Temple based at the aquifer that sent water 134km away to Carthage using Aqueducts.
We then went to barrage/dam Sidi Medien, we grilled our lunch on the lake side and then hiked all the way around it.
A great day with great people!
Thanks to Habla Event for hosting this rondonee:

Zaghouan:
Zaghouan is an Andalusian city in the northern half of Tunisia. Situated on a low ridge of the Dorsale Mountains, the town has a mild climate and presents a green aspect. Cold water from here was taken by aqueduct to Carthage. The city is famous for its roses, originally cultivated by Muslim refugees from Spain in the seventeenth century. The city is located around 70 km south of Tunis and around 50 km inland (west) from the Gulf of Hammamet and has an estimated population of around 38,445 (2014). It is the capital of the Zaghouan Governorate.
On the mountain south of the city is the Roman Water Temple Djebel Zaghouan (Temple de Eaux), source of an aqueduct which used to take water to the city of Carthage over 100 km away.
Ziqua is believed to be derived from the Latin word aqua, which means ‘water’, as the region was reputed for its water springs. Water has always been a hallmark of the region,” said Abdelkader ben Hnia, a guide in Zaghouan.
The importance of water in the history of Zaghouan is best illustrated by the Zaghouan Aqueduct, which was ordered built by Roman Emperor Hadrian in 128AD to transport water from Zaghouan to Carthage after a drought of five years in North Africa
Extending over 132km, the aqueduct is a masterpiece of architecture and is one of the longest built during Roman times.

Zaghouan Zipleline! - Tunisia
Another hike through the mountains of north Tunisia. This time we visit Zaghouan, where we roam the hills and old mines and also get some ziplining done!
Early start as usual and Zaghouan is not far from Tunis so just an hour later we were there. We hiked through the hills, taking in the rugged terrain, we explored an old abandoned mine shaft, along with the ruin houses of the mining facilities.
We then made our way through a dry river bed to the ziplining spot, we all had fun zipping across the valleys, some were afraid but still did it.
After the fun of the zipline it was a short hike out then we boarded the bus and visited the Water Temple.
A great day and good hike!
Thanks as always for watching!

Zaghouan Roman Temple Of Water [Since Year 128]
The Water temple of Zaghouan is usually referred to by its French name, Temple des Eaux, or Temple des Numphes. It dates back to Roman times, and was not a temple, simpy a grand fountain.
Its location is as impressive today as it must have been in the 2nd century CE. Above it rises the 1,295 metre high Zaghouan Mountain, and in front stretches the fields. You may almost see the Mediterranean Sea on a clear day.
Its decoration has similarities with what you would find in a temple. There are 12 niches each having a life size statue representing the 12 months of a year. In the middle there was really a temple, of which only the central niche remains.
The basin below the platform is shaped like the figure of 8, and served to filter the water before letting it on to the aqueducts. The best remains of the aqueduct are found near Oudna
