Fairies: A Uniquely Irish View of Reality!
This is a light-hearted explanation regarding Irish fairy folk :)
Irish fairies are an intrinsic part of this small island's culture. Traditionally, we were raised to be wary of 'the good people' and their special places. Even today, farmers do not disturb what are described as fairy rings and perhaps this is one way of reminding people to respect nature.
Irish fairies are a clan based community who have traditionally influenced Irish society in the same way as the Mafia or the Yakuza!
Even the most scientific amongst us (namely my father) always showed respect to the existing beliefs. I absorbed it too, it feels like a mixture of wonder and fear. To this day I would never actively challenge the established rules (for example, I would never bring a cutting of hawthorn in bloom into the house as this would upset the fairy folk).
Even national school teachers, many of whom had grown up in rural areas, were keen to acknowledge fairy lore and often talked about these superstitions.
The Leprechauns were part of the Tuatha De Dannan (a mystical race who arrived to Ireland on boats that sailed the skies). However, they were considered 'less than' and shunned by their majestic clan.
The Leprechauns were diligent and gentle, they even survived their apartheid and remained in Ireland after their disapproving clan had left. I like how they became skilled tailors and cobblers and how they demonstrated an excellent work ethic.
And how we still gaze dreamily at rainbows... :)
Also, I forgot to mention that according to Irish folklore, if a fairy exchanged your child with a changeling, it was wise to raise the little one with care. Thankfully this understanding was firmly in place, otherwise some little ones could have been in danger of persecution. It is so much a part of Irish folklore that the poet WB Yeats wrote about this in his poem 'The Stolen Child.'
'Come away, O human child,
To the waters and the wild,
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping,
Than you can understand.'

The Kerry Way, Ireland: Caherdaniel to Waterville
On yet another sunny day (Ireland was displaying it's best weather), Nancy Moran drove us from Moran's Seaside Farmhouse in Bunavalla, up the road to where The Kerry Way continues. Today's section was a high and easy coastal route with glorious coast views out towards the Skellig Islands and Ballinskelligs Bay.
There were also many interesting markers along the way; an old horse path; a deserted cottage where a piper heard fairy music; and a final stretch along the road into busy Waterville.
Klondyke House B&B (owned by Cirean Morris) is located along the main road in Waterville and was our accommodation tonight. Suitcases had already been delivered and Klondyke House was yet another lovely B&B with hospitable owner who gave eating recommendations and what to see in Waterville.

Cahercommaun Triple Ring Fort aerial footage. DJI Phantom
This fort is actually 1200 years old (apologies), and inhabited by about 40 high ranking chieftains and families. It's an amazing place, only 15 minutes walk from the car park. The nearest town is Carron,Co.Clare,Ireland. We were there by 4am to get the lovely dawn light, what a great way to spend an early morning.
